Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from non-running beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

Thanks to everyone for the advice on my PF problem. I think the speedwork is worsening my problem so I'm going to back off of that for now and work on stretching and cross-training. I'm not giving up on CDC yet and I'd still like a 2:35 finish, but we'll take it slow.

In good news, I bagged my 7 mile run today partly for healing and partly for a running efficiency/form clinic this morning. It was excellent! It only cost $25 for 2 hours and we got a $25 gift card for the running store (Fit2Run) where it was held. The clinic was run by two USATF-certified triathlete/personal trainers. I was really impressed with both of them and their level of knowledge. The first half was on gait and form, then second on warm ups, stretching, plyometrics and stride drills. I really need to work on strengthening my core and stretching before and after a run. The guy that did the stretching part recommends doing some skipping, jumping, bounding, backward and sideways running as part of a LR during the warmup and cooldown periods. He also recommends stopping at the halfway point and stretching for 1 to 2 min, which can improve your chances for having a good second half and negative splits. We ended up with a videotaped gait analysis. The shoe lady says my ASICS Cumulus are working as far as correcting my supination problems but may not be cushioned enough for me. (She also said my foot's telling me that's too many races this year :rolleyes1 ) She recommended Saucony Progrid Triumph 4 which I got with my giftcard in lime green! Overall, very impressed with the running clinic and planning to check the schedule to see what else they're offering.

Kelly...welcome back! Sorry about the gallbladder...DH was down for about 3 weeks after hers.

Jen...welcome!

Sara...can't wait to hear about your Grandma's race! That one's on my list!

Megan...good luck with the student loans. We're on the 30 year plan with ours.

Cam and Howard...congrats on your 5K!

Carrie...how are you doing?

Jen, Vic, Monica...how's the foot? Do we need to start a PF club?

Jackie...sounds like you might be wanting to join the PF club ;) congrats on the 10 miles!

Dave...dude, I want your job! Seems like my conferences are always in Orlando ;)

I guess I'm going to have to be the outlier on the Coke v Pepsi thing. I definitely prefer Diet Pepsi to Diet Coke :crazy2: Kinda odd...when I drank the 'real' stuff, I always preferred Coke.

Happy Father's Day to all our WISH dads! We're taking DH to Morrocco for lunch at Marrakesh!

Mel thank you for adding Erica and I to the team list, we love the WISH team and the WISH attitude ROCKS!!!!!

Dave:hippie:

Good morning everyone, and Happy Father's Day to all of you dads.

I'm still debating if I'll be doing any running today. May just veg out in front of the TV. It IS raceday. :)

Mel - Sounds like the clinic was well worth the time and money. Hope the new shoes work. The foot feels ok. Between new shoes and new insoles (ordered from Road Runner Sports) I guess I'm in the experimintation mode. Hopefully, I can figure something out without making it worse.

:)

Jackie

Congratulations on 10. I always feel that first 10 miler of a training season is a major mental milestone (MMM). There is something special about going double digits.

Howard

8:30 per mile is good stuff. I'm still holding onto sub-70 as my goal for the Tower of Terror, right at 8:40 per mile. Interested in carrying me through the course at that pace??

Cam

I would beg to differ that you had a horrible 5K yesterday. I am pleased, however, that you have set some goals and aren't happy when you miss them. Welcome to the world of competitive athletics. Competing with yourself and being disappointed when you don't get it is good. And also remember that when you start training and running you get lots of improvement pretty quickly, but the improvent comes at a decreasing rate. It is discouraging to be working hard and not see much improvement, but that cannot be avoided. You do get faster, but as you get faster the rate of improvement gets slower and slower.

Mel

Back to lime green?? I know it's a pain to be constantly fiddling with shoes, but I think more cushioning is better when you are fighting injury, either PF like you or the calfs like me. I was interested to hear of the gait talk, as I have absolutely changed by gait as I've gotten older and more susceptible to injury. In my earlier running career I ran with huge push from my calfs, really driving out each stride. After 3 years now of fighting calf problems I seem to have found a stride which is more quad-driven and asks less from my calfs. Of course, that means my quads are the first thing to go in all runs and races, but at least the quads just fatigue and get sore.

Like you, and unlike MSW Dave, my fall conference is in Orlando. I will be there 2 weekends in a row, staying at the Swan both times. Conference October 18 through 21, Tower of Terror October 25 through 28.

Vic

Do experiment with all the variables of your exercise program to see if you can find the routine which allows you to stay active and pain free.

I do have one bit of information relating to maximum times in races. The Boston Athletic Association's half marathon is in early October, and it must be a fast field since they have a fair amount of prize money (wonder if I'll win any :confused3 ). The amazing thing is the race starts at 8 a.m., the award ceremony is at 10:30, and the course closes at 10:30. That's right, the max time is 2:30, 11:26 per mile. That sure doesn't leave much room for things that happen to us all from time to time such as cramping, heat issues, and the like.

Best to all

Craig

Popping in on the main thread to say that Susan and I are still alive :)

We did our LSW on Saturday for 14 miles. It went GREAT! It was our 2nd 14 miler. Our first was 25 minutes slower and ended in me having a back issue (strained or knotted muscles?) that left me in a slower week following that.

But yesterday's went amazingly well. We always break halfway thru to grab fresh cold water but this time we did the break after 9 miles and it was a nice mental game that got us thru and while not a Disney race pace it was a happy pace that left us feeling like we did good and that we COULD do this distance and the coming distances.

We have settled into a schedule for walking/running. We now have 2 days dedicated to speed and incline work. We don't have hills but we have a couple of nice inclines that we can run up and work out on. Saturdays are always the long slow days and Sunday's are suppose to be a 3 or 4 miler depending on how we feel.

While we feel great today we decided to be lazy and avoid the bath of bug spray for the day. I have to say it's one of the pitfalls of summer training. To start the day smelling of OFF is not a happy thing.

That said we are ranging between 22 and 26 miles a week and looking up :thumbsup2

Mel that clinic sounded wonderful I'm going off now to see what the local or not so local running stores have added to their calenders. :)

Happy training trails!!! And Happy Father's Day!!!!

Happy Dad's Day y'all.

I met Erica, when she got off work, for breakfast at Bob Evans. I usually get a garden omlet with no cheese or honinday sauce but today I splurged and got sasuage patties with my omlet and homefries. I love sasuage but don't often partake of this treat.

I have to work today but we will probably get Mexican at Pepper's for dinner, then early to bed for our LSD day tomorrow.

Anyone else getting excited about our Tower of Terror adventure?

Dave:hippie:

Hey everyone just a quick training report.

DH and I just got back from our 8K felt good, went in the pool for awhile temp is 78F so nice and cool on the legs, now to hit the showers.

Enjoy your day!!!!!

Kim

Hi everybody!! Just a quick drive by to report on my training:

I did 5 miles this morning at a 10:06 pace. It was quite hot here this morning and I paid for it in my run. I just couldn't get myself moving any faster, and felt a little bit dehydrated at the end, so I need to drink more water along the way.

Happy Father's Day to all our WISH dads! I hope you all had a great day!

Back to watching the race! I will try to catch up with everyone a little later on! GO DALE JR!!

I hope each of you has the perfect day--whatever your perfect day is. As for my studmuffin, champagne with cheese and crackers, a dish selected by him and lovely gifts! He deserves it all.

I did get in a 3.2 mile run yesterday. I had a stonker of a run last Monday and I was hoping for better. It was better, but hotter. Much, much hotter. I was happy that it was only 3.2 and it did feel good. Biking and some weight work today. Not sure about tomorrow, but I'll tackle that tomorrow.

Mel: happy to hear the clinic was worthwhile! Sorry about your PF problems. Think the advice you got at the clinic will help that?

Vic: did you end of vegging? Whatever you did, I hope you enjoyed it!

Diane: it sounds like you and Susan are doing well in your training. I hear you about the bug spray.

Dave: I am TOTALLY psyched about ToT! I talked a number of people into registering. If no one minds, I may invite them to the WISH meet even though they aren't official members to meet everyone. Especially my trainer: she'd love to meet all of you!

Hockeychic: hope the 8K went well!

hockeygirl: sounds like it's too hot for my blood in Jersey. Drink up!

Have a really great rest of the day!

Craig ~ I hope to be in your league for the Tower of Terror run. I don't think you'll need anyone to carry you, it is I that will probably need some swift kicks from behind. :rolleyes1

Thanks to everyone who posted a note of congratulations for me on the 5K. It was my best time this year.

Kelly's Logan House, March 3, 2007; 27:37; 8:53
3rd Salesianum DFRC, March 25, 2007; 29:39; 9:34
Saint Edmond's Academy, May 13, 2007; 27:45; 8:57
7th Miles for Molly June 16, 2007; 26:26; 8:32*

I actually dropped over a minute from my first run of the year back in March. All that with virtually no training. I need to get it in gear for the CDC.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY TO ALL THE WISH DADS!!!

*Official Time

Cam and I are running in another 5K event this Thursday night at 6:45 PM on June 21. I'm sure I'll post the results as will she.

Happy Father's Day to all the WISH dads!:goodvibes

Howard and Cam
- Great job on your races. Cam- you did fine! Good luck on Thursday's Race.

Mel - :wizard: for the PF problems.

HockeyChic and Hockeygirl - good job on your runs!

DianeL - Glad you and Susan are having good training sessions :thumbsup2

Terri

I went out, all excited, but after 2.5 miles, my blister had blown open again, and grown a baby sister next to it...

Is there any way for me to keep going and get this stupid thing healed at the same time???? It's a little bigger than a half dollar now!

Anyways, my 2.5 miles, I did in 38 minutes (I know, pretty slow, but for me, it was a great time!) I still can only run for about a minute at a time, then spend 4 or 5 trying to recover enough to do another one, but I feel like I'm making some progress ('cept this blister is holding me back!!)

Hope all the DADS here had a great, relaxing day!

Now that things have calmed down a little I can post quickly before the next crisis seems to pop up. I though today was supposed to be a restful day for me.:lmao:

My long run yesterday didn't happen. My calf was still sore so I decided it would be better not to push things. My lower back still seems tight but I can probably attribute that to a certain 4yo that jumped on me when I was on the floor. :rolleyes1 I am getting much too old for some of those activities.

Howard and Cam - Great job on the race this weekend. Those times looked great. Good luck on your race this week as well.

Martha - Glad your run was a little better. Sorry about the heat but I have been dealing with that for a while so I am still envious of all the cool weather people are having.

Laurie - Great job on the run, that is a great pace to have when it is hot.

Kim - Great job on the 8k run.

WWDave - Glad you were able to splurge a little. With all your miles, you definitely have earned it.

Diane - Congrats on doing the 14 miles. I'm glad to hear that it was faster this time around and you had a good time.

Craig - I am sure you will do great at the half. Just make sure that if you have any students in it, they don't beat you. I think losing a couple of letter grades might be a good incentive.

Vic - Although the day is almost over, I vote for resting. Although if your driver didn't win, you may want to work out some frustration.

Mel - Glad you were able to learn something for the clinic. We are all waiting for the executive summary to tell us what we are doing wrong since you are now the expert. ;) I guess now that you have the Wish shoes, socks, hat, and shirt all you are missing are the shorts.

MSDave - More great pics. Hopefully you don't have too many withdrawl pains once you get back home.

Angie - You snuck in before I posted. Sorry the run didn't go better for you. I have put something called like second skin on blisters when I needed to keep going and it has worked great. A backpacking group I went with a couple of times several years ago had a great experience with this when they got blisters during hiking. Moleskin is also good to put on before you get a blister. It will generally keep you from getting any if you put it on before it is formed.

Sorry to anyone I missed but I have been recruited by Lynnda to find missing bottles and pacifiers. I can think of other people who would do a much better job of searching but he is already in bed. Have a good week everyone.

Bill

Dave: I am TOTALLY psyched about ToT! I talked a number of people into registering. If no one minds, I may invite them to the WISH meet even though they aren't official members to meet everyone. Especially my trainer: she'd love to meet all of you!

Martha, I don't think anyone would mind you bringing guests to the meets. We might even get some new recruits. We will be on our best behavior, hee hee.

Dave:hippie: "YARC"

Mel - That clinic sounded awesome. Also... I prefer diet pepsi to diet coke... but I'd take regular coke over regular pepsi anyday!!

Well... I got out yesterday morning for my 6 mile "LR" out at the rail trail. Finished in 54:13 (9:02 mpm) so not bad at all. I ran most of it at a 9:30 pace, and then sped up to about a 8:30 for the last two miles. I was feeling great until I let DH talk me out of my ice bath. The kids were driving him crazy so I just skipped it. I am definately paying for it today. I got out of bed and my calves were so tight I could hardly walk, and they along with the rest of my legs have been hurting all day. NEVER AGAIN WILL I SKIP THE ICE BATH!! Luckily, this week is a rather slow week. I've got runs of no more than 4 miles all week, so I can take the time to recover and rest my little legs.

Michael will be doing a r4/w1 this week. I can't wait to see how well he does, he did the r3/w1 with hardly any problems at all. I think once we get to a r4/w1 we might just stay there and start working on adding some time to our 20 minutes to build him up to the 3 miles. Then if he wants to start running more than the 4 minutes he can, but at least he'll already have the distance down. Right now a mile takes him about 14 minutes, so we'll have to build up to about 45 minutes of running to get to 3 miles. Has anyone else done any running with their kids? I am afraid of pushing him too hard, but he seems to be enjoying it. We only run 3 days a week, and we maintain a pace that he can talk comfortably while running. Anywho.....

Happy Father's Day to all of our dad's .....

and I will talk to everone later in the week. I am off to ice my legs!!

Cam and Howard, congrats on your events. Sounds to me like a success for sure. Cam, don’t be so hard on yourself. Your times are improving. Even if you weren’t “on” for what you thought your time should be I’m thinking it was fast!

Jackie, what great news on those 10 miles, I hope you are doing well today.

Meghan, don’t worry about keeping up. I can’t keep up either. Just keep on posting what you can.

Nancy, you are really flying too! Great time you’ve got there.

I’m thinking I’ll be all alone at the back.

Krista, I suggest getting Hines up and out earlier during the week. That way you will be FORCED to get up early on weekends and can get your early runs done. (That’s what happens here with the pups—they get me up early every day.)

Dave, I am hoping you made the return home in good order. I’m sure all the ladies there missed you much! Your dedication to training was a pleasure to share, I have truly enjoyed your pics and the sharing of your training last week.

Renee, glad your Dad is ok.

Tricia
- Our Galloway group had a PT talk to us after a run a couple of weeks ago. They just sent us a website with all the stretches on it. Check this out: http://www.theathletesfootrdu.com/ProgressPT%20stretches.pdf...

Jackie
Jackie, Thanks for the link!

Mel, that sounded like a major informative running clinic. I WISH we had something going on here like that. I’ll have to look around some.

Diane and Susan, good for that LR! Sounds like you’ve figured out the mind over matter thing. Yes, on that bug spray thing being a bother, but not having it seems more of a bother afterwards.

Kim, 8k and pool for cool down. There’s the idea!

Laurie, yes, hydrating is good. To me that pace is flying!

Martha, running in the heat, good training for WDW, so is running in the cold…you never know. Hope your XT day was good today.

Angie, sorry about the blister thing. Craig had posted a real long time ago about how to tape the blister so you can keep on keepin’ on. Maybe he can offer good advice once again. I think it should be a good thing for the “sticky FAQ” on the top of this thread if it’s not already there I guess it should be. I'll try to check for it.

WWDave, glad you got to live the high life at breakfast today. Mmmm.

Bill, sounds like you are having a busty Fathers Day. Oh, and you get to play games too, find the whatchamacallit.

Dana, you are doing well with your training. It seems like you’ve got a sound plan going.

DH leaves for Albany, NY tomorrow. I’ll be the bachelorette once again. He may come back as early as Thursday, probably Friday though. My week will be busy, but I’ll make certain to get those steps and then some.

Tomorrow, my "official" training begins. I need to simply walk/run for 30 minutes. I think I can handle that.

I completed (barely) the full in 2005. For those of you who ran it, it was horribly hot - much different than when I did the 1/2 in 2003. (In 2003 it was darn well "chilly".) I was sweating large salt crystals and drinking whatever I could to stay hydrated. I was taking cups of Powerade at the stops . . . the problem with this is that I did not train drinking Powerade. It made me so nauseous and added an extra obstacle to an already horrific distance considering the weather. Hot + Nasueas = No Good.
Tip to Remember: If you don't train with Powerade, don't drink it on raceday!

You all probably already know this well. I figured I'd remind myself of my previous mistake (so as not to repeat it) while subscribing to this week's thread! Happy Monday to you all!

Oh, BTW, my "real" name is Laura . . .

Angie

One technique for blisters is vaseline on the blister and skin, then a bandaid, then white athletic tape. I've used this since the 1970's to good effect.

A newer way is the second skin Bill mentioned. The stuff is pretty magical. You can find it at Pharmacies and it's a plastic layer, very cool and soothing. I got a terrible heel blister in the half of the 2006 Goofy and they put it on the spot in the medical area after the race. I was very concerned I wouldn't even be able to start the marathon the next day, but I found second skin on Saturday, and on Sunday morning applied:

Vaseline
Second Skin
White athletic tape
Socks, 2 thin layers
Vaseline on the socks and the shoes in the hot areas

And I had zero trouble through the full.

Also, I always run in 2 sock layers. A super thin layer closest to the skin, and a wright's double layer sock over that. This works well, until I rub off the padding inside the right heel of the shoe, then the blisters appear.

Good luck

Craig
