Hello!

We were recently looking into renting DVC points for the first time but we are not sure how it exactly works. Hopefully some of you who have done this before can help us out with some of our questions.
  1. How exactly does MDE and Magicbands work with DVC rentals?
  2. Where have you rented points from? (David's rental or directly from the Dis?)
  3. What has your experience been like?

Thank you!

DVC rental is a private transaction between you and the DVC owner. Disney only rents points to DVC Owners (and then only 15pts per year I think.)

You should get a Reservation number from your owner which you can link to your MDE account. Mine link fine, but then I'm an owner, and normally they are just there.

I'll jump in there and say that I have rented from many people on these boards and have been nothing but pleased. For us it is the only way we go to Disney!

When you 'rent points', what you're really doing is renting a reservation from a DVC member - paying a member to make a reservation for you.

DVC is Disney's version of a points-based timeshare. In other words, members use their points to 'pay' for a reservation. Points required per night vary by the resort and the room type and the season. Here's a points chart, take a look and figure out how many points you'd need.

DVC Point Chart

You can rent directly from an owner; see our DVC Rent/Trade board for that.

Or, you can rent through a service like DVC By Request; they act as a broker and match you up with an owner who has the points you need.

A couple of things to keep in mind when thinking about renting:

1. The owner maintains control of the reservation at all times. Any changes, additions of the dining plan, or requests have to be done by the owner.

2. It's best to assume that your transaction may be non-refundable, and that changes to dates, resorts or room type may not be possible.

Same boat here but I am renting from a friend of ours. It is our first time. There are companies that you can rent from but they are more expensive than going through a private owner. There are people on here to who rent. Just look on the rent forum here :)

1.You still get a magic band with your room key on it, you will still have to purchase a park ticket either from Disney, or a place like undercovertourist, and once you arrive, can link it to the magicband with the resort reservation. Fast pass reservations can be made once you have tickets linked to your acct.

2. I've always gone through David's DVC rentals

3.My experience has been absolutely WONDERFUL! I've done Old Key West Studio & Bay Lake Tower studio. As per renting points, the process has been wonderful, easy, they're super friendly & informative each time, helping out. Especially since there is a point minimum & they've been nice enough to let me do a one night stay here & there!

As for the hotels themselves, OKW is defintely among my fave all time resorts now!! The studio seemed to have more space than the 1 bdr's over at AoA, the kitchenette was wonderful to help have breakfast in the morning (and wine in the evenings :rotfl:) great space, great resort, friendly staff, beautiful views, it was all great!!

1) Same as ever. You'll get magicbands and you just have to attach your tickets.
2) I rent from owners on the Dis. I've had amazing experiences all three times. I truly have enjoyed every experience.
3) As I said, I rent from Dis. I do get contracts, but these have been easy transactions. I have also *tried* to rend points, and failed because nothing was really open. Even then, the owners were super nice. They can go back and view your posts on the Dis, and you can go through and see all of theirs too, so it adds another layer of depth to the renting process. I also wouldn't hesitate to use David's!

Great questions, I have also been looking into renting points for December 2015. I know its early but the more I know the more comfortable I will feel going into it.
I have read the seventh month mark is when I need to start looks for rent points and make a offer, if that what you call it. If I could add to your questions can you get free dining in you rent DVC points?

No free dining when staying on DVC points unfortunately.

If you are ready to book you can start looking for someone with points in that resort to rent 11-12 months out to book at 11 months. (Members can book their home resort 11 months in advance.) Some BR options book very quickly at some resorts at some times of the year. Just because the points are available to rent doesn't mean you can get the specific reservation you want.

I don't understand unfortunately. It's as I said it's a private transaction between you and the owner. The owner can always "throw in" DDP for you. As an owner I'd rather take less for the reservation, and not include DDP. But you could get "Free dining" because DVC can add DDP without ticket/package.

But Disney is NOT involved. In fact most things to do with reservation MUST be done though DVC Member Services, and a non-owner can not call them (well they won't talk to a non-owner.)

if disney offers any special cash deals (30% off, 7-for-4, free dining), you cannot get that with a points stay.

part of the reasoning is that points stays are already discounted, so no stacking discounts.

the other issue, as stated, is that you are renting from an individual and not disney directly.

Huh?

Confused.

Free dining is only available when you book a rack rate room direct from Disney during one of their offer periods.

DVC is a time share. Entirely separate from Disney central reservations. No owner in their right mind would pay for a renter to have a dining plan. Now, the DVC member can add the dining plan to the reservation and you pay for it, but there is not way he/she would pay. Plenty of people out there who want to rent points, no need for them to do that.

Umm has nothing to do with stacking. Has to do with you are renting from an Owner not Disney. The owner can always price based on what Disney is doing.

The points themselves are paid for up front, currently about $155/pt + a maintenance fee each year.

Just a note that DVC low season does not always correlate with Disney low season. Early December is one of the most popular times for DVC so if you were looking at that time period, you need to find someone with points before the 11 month booking window opens.

True... But why would you when you don't have to? It can't see how that would actually work in an owners favor.

True.... But why would they if there is someone to take the points w/o paying the dining plan? I just can't see how this would work out all that well for an owner. It seems most people have very little problem renting their points out.

I know what DVC is I own. I could charge people Disney Rack Rates for a DVC reservation, and I'd "throw in DDP." But I'd call it Free Dining just like Disney Does it would make people feel good.

My point is when your rent points you are renting from someone that is "Not Disney." The getting "free dining" question has always confused me. Do you go into Walmart and ask them why Amazon has the same product cheaper with free shipping?

Totally true/ you really could do whatever you wanted. But, I don't think a savvy/educated renter would go for the disney rack rate with "free" Dining thrown in. I think for most, they would run the numbers and see they are better off paying the "standard" rental and buying dining plan themselves. Maybe not though.

You are correct though.... It's a private transaction and the individuals can agree to pretty much whatever they want between themselves.

I do think though when people ask about "free dining" they mean the offer from Disney for their reservations.
