Coming out of lurkdom

While on Facebook I came across this news announcement. Since it's been confirmed I wonder what Disney will charge for the service.

Disney is launching its own streaming service and will be pulling its content off Netflix.Disney announced it will end its distribution agreement with Netflix beginning in 2019.

It is not at all surprising they are moving this way. I think they had even mentioned it in previous D23 events as a vision for the future.

ESPN is definitely in a position where they need a shot in the arm. I'm not totally sure it's own streaming service is the answer. The company has made bad decision after bad decision. They may want to fix this first.

A separate Disney streaming service can make sense if done right. The vault has a ton of wonderful content not seen in years. Making this available to the public could be very beneficial financially. As for pricing, I would think the sweet spot would be in the $9.99 range.

Loved the 80's and 90's stuff. Bring it back!!!! Disney also owns Fraggle Rock and other great acquired stuff I'd love to see. But you are right, they need to keep the cost very tempting ... and bring back some old stuff. If it's just movies ... we have them all so there would be no need. I really wonder if they will move to some original content as well.

The educated guess with this is that they will find just how hard it will be to sell an a la carte brand product to a mass audience for fee...even the "successful" services - HBO and showtime for example - are largely tied to access through a cable or satellite provider.

The reality is that espn doesn't provide much of what people craved when it became big: which was access to sports and in depth coverage. You can get that regionally or from the leagues themselves now and espn is "content" based. That worked...until it didn't...and it doesn't anymore.

Advertising is also dead. Who watches commercials? I suppose they can try to sell banners on a steam to make revenue...but it's never gonna be close to the same. The ship has sailed.

Disney channel is a more intriguing option...that's a strong brand niche. But they have struggled mightily to get programming that will attact audiences. A paid service for it? I don't know there either.

Be interesting how it works out when it comes to the cable companies and whether they may and try to pull orient away from them too.

I'd easily pay $9.99 a month for everything that Disney have ever done.

What about shows like Daredevil ect which were Netflix originals? Do they all go too?

This I find very interesting! The Marvel/Netflix series were a huge booster for viewership. I don't see the current series going anywhere, as I believe they're actually produced by Netflix, and Hulu is also producing a Marvel's Runaways series.

But in the future I can see Disney only producing newer Marvel series exclusive to their TV channels (including ABC, FreeForm etc) and streaming outlets. I could also see more exclusive IP just to boost the streaming ... ie live action Star Wars or Indiana Jones series. They may eventually be able to have all the Marvel content on one streaming site as well, no longer exclusive. Why pay for Netflix and Hulu when you could get all the Marvel series in one outlet.

we have disney life in the uk and its £4.99 p/m ....and with a 1YO its a lifesaver tbh, im guessing this is a building on from this service?

This is most definitely their Hail Mary play (pun fully intended) for espn. They need that network to regain some of its luster so I'm not surprised they're trying it. I'm also not expecting it to be great given their history of IT follies

With Disney also purchasing the majority stake in BAMTech, I'm hoping that changes.

Fraggle is currently shown on hbo...don't know the deets on that agreement.

I agree though that showing movies is gonna be pointless...those can begot with a swipe on iTunes...

Original programming will be key...that sounds expensive though. Based on how they are already bailing out of Star Wars rebels...which has struggle for audience...how do they stomach costs for a lot more? They've had the cable shield to hide behind and that's entirely why they are in trouble.

How bad is that NBA contract now?

Well...I have paid for years for both the mlb.tv and NHL.tv packages (why in the hell would I want to watch the professional loser city of Philadelphia?)...and they are really great products that have shown marked improvement. Those are bamtech.

So like $8 a month or $100 a year in the US?

...I could see that working at that price level...but I don't see them pricing it that low.

We'll see. I'm sure they'll just double the cost of my annual pass and breakfast at crystal palace to punish me anyway:wizard:

That's about my limit. I'm already paying for Netflix and Amazon.

I'm not interested in paying more than $10 for another streaming service. I think Disney needs to tread carefully here.

I'm also not interested in the ESPN option as I already have ESPN with Directv, i hope they are able to separate that from the Disney Movie collection.

Not going to sub to a Disney only service. That was the whole point of cutting in the first place. Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon have an assortment of shows and are producing top notch originals, as well. If the niche channels want to start their own service, good luck to them, but I'm not moving with them.

I already feel like too much of my money goes to streaming services. There's more I'd like to add but I barely have time to watch what I do watch. I don't think I wish to add another. I wish they had just bought Hulu or Netflix.

And that's quickly becoming the problem...people are already moaning about swapping their cable bills for streams and engaging in the time honored 1980's tradition of trying to steal it...

Not really. I am really curious if they will accept Disney Gift Cards for payment. I hope they just do an add on channel for the major streaming platforms.

Really?

Submit to the "D"? No desire to find out if it's awful service or a complete ripoff first?
