Hurricane Irma?

This isn't uncommon. I work for a large health care system on the coast. During an emergency situation, essential employees are required to come to work and will be terminated if they don't show up. Non-essential employees are not allowed to come to work, and they must use vacation time if they want to get paid for hours not worked. It's been that way at every hospital I've ever worked -- just part of the reality of being employed.

Yeah, not so much. Many employers do not do this. Strike that-- I have never worked for an employer who has done this. I hope that the upcoming contract negotiations turn out very favorably for the cast members. All I keep reading over and over again is how amazing they have been, and as the face of the company I think most people would be sad to hear that many are living paycheck to paycheck because of tight hours and low wages.

I think companies need to be more giving in situations like this.I own a small company in the Northeast When the weather is dangerous to drive, like a snowstorm, I cancel work and pay them for the day off. This is just a small company though, it could be much harder for large companies.

Probably one CM doing their job. Disney spends millions of dollars creating and protecting their image. Negative means lost revenue. The fact that very little was in the news about WDW and Irma wasn't just by chance, Disney controlled the reporting and forbid camera crews from shooting on Disney property.
I doubt it. There was no indication by the OP that it was a security staffer. Yes, Disney is careful to make sure that they monitor the presence of any member of the media on their property and make sure a staffer is assigned to "work" with them. In this case, it's a tree that fell over during a historic weather event. What exactly is the "negative" press that this CM was trying to prevent? How much business do you think Disney management thinks they will lose from the public finding out a tree fell at the Poly? I cannot begin to imagine that Poly management told their CMs to be on the look out for the hundreds of people that might take photos of damaged plant life out in the open and ask them to stop and delete any banned images. At worst, it was likely a CM who decided to personally stretch a known concept beyond its logical end-point instead of it being part of their job.

I was talking pictures at the new Kidani when I noticed a security guard following me and he told me to stop taking pictures and wanted my ID. I was dumb struck and demanded a supervisor. The supervisor/manager explained that they had been watching me all morning and some of the pictures that I took were of less desirable areas of the resort and that Disney only wants us to remember the best. I was asked to delete pictures that were not typical of family photos. I wasn't backstage, or taking pictures of backstage. Upon returning home I contacted Disney and explained that the encounter was upsetting and that I would like information on their photo policy. I never got a response.
With little doubt they approached you because they thought you were a member of the media that had slipped into Kidani to take photos for something of which they knew not. It's not an uncommon thing to have happen. There was a big kerfuffle a few years back when a photographer taking photos outside The House of Blues with "pro" equipment on a tripod was approached about his intentions by security and asked for ID and an explanation as to what the photos would be used for. He said they were for personal use but opted to refuse to give his name or show ID and then left after a stand-off before he could be trespassed. In your case, and his, the fact that security wanted to determine the identity of the photographer in an effort to determine your intentions put those events on a different footing as what the OP described.

It's a volunteer deal, but I have physical disabilities that prevent me from doing the heavy lifting required of parks CMs for ride-out crew. I can't carry sandbags, for example, or move trashcans indoors. So, I don't volunteer.

My roommate at the Contemporary is going to make about $1300 for his shift on ride-out. Of course, he also got screamed at by countless guests for stupid things and had someone from Miami threaten to kill him, so I'd say he earned it.

Everybody I know nowadays earns their salary. Life is hard on American workers. I've been telling my newly-adult son that he needs to continue his education because soon enough, he'll have to work hard and may as well be decently compensated for it.

Raven, as to your other post--BT DT. Hope some good luck (and money) comes your way soon. :)

That sucks, I'm sorry. Do they take volunteers to be trained for ride out crew, or is that more of a nomination/pre certification (outside education/skills) deal?
I don't know about the crews at the resorts, but for the parks (from what my son has said), they are looking for people with specific job-related skill sets (maintenance staff, groundskeepers, stage techs, security, zookeepers, food staff to feed the crew, etc.) that can be used during the final preparations, and then for the damage assessments and initial restoration efforts. When the call goes out as a hurricane approaches and volunteers are asked for. My son volunteered on Thursday and was picked later that same day with a report time on Friday. There's no advance training, that I'm aware of. He both wanted the experience this time as well as not losing pay due to the park shutdowns like he did with Matthew last year. I feel sorry for the CMs that lost money that they need, but in my son's case it will be a big monetary shot in the arm this time. He worked 58 hours as part of the ride-out team on top of his regular shifts this week.

I don't know about the non-unionized CMs, but the "no work, no pay" work rules are part of the union contracts with those CMs.

Wow! I can't even begin to imagine what these CMs have been through. We're at BLT and have been over to the Contemporary multiple times before and after the storm. Every CM we came in contact with was friendly and helpful. Most were open to chatting a bit about their experience on the ride out crew. I have trouble understanding the people who would scream at someone in a situation such as this.

I fly out of OKC to MCO on Wednesday. Leaves at 10am and connects through ATL :worried: I'm so nervous!!!! I just want to get to Disney.

Would love to hear from a local on this question: how long do you think it will take supermarkets to restock their shelves? Is there a particular chain that is better at keeping stocked?

Part of my group flies in Wednesday and is using a town car service that makes a supermarket stop. Do you think the stores will be stocked with water, beer and non-perishables by then?

DH and I are scheduled on the 08:45 nonstop from CVG to MCO and i am a nervous wreck! You aren't alone!!

We are 6:00 from MLU to ATL then to MCO arriving at 11:30am tomorrow 9.12.17

It has not been delayed or canceled. I called Delta and Ryan said they were still "on time"

Fingers crossed

It's great to see that damage was minimal in the area. It really looked scary for a while. Of course, some of the islands got the worst of it.

I hope that everyone gets their vacation back on track!

Also flying in on Wed. Flightaware.com has been keeping me calm as they are reporting few cancellations with an MCO destination. Also I think the gods must have been smiling down on me when I booked our flights. I usually connect through Atlanta, but for the first time we will be doing Nashville Wednesday and the weather appears to be more favorable there. Hope everyone has a wonderful trip this week!

MCO will officially be open early September 12!!!

My flight for 7:30 am is still showing as on time  and the plane is now patiently waiting at ACY to pick me and my son up to give us a ride to Disney along with many impatient others...hope all goes well for us and we land on time, they have my rental car, and I can get a room early enough for a nap before MNSSHP. Insert pixie dust here please.
And I just have to say they better not cancel at the last minute unless Godzilla storms Orlando. But now that I think about it I'd want to meet him and his son is supper cute lol.

Good luck all on your upcoming flights! Here's to still having my flight in the morning.

I gather they also have more volunteers than spots available. 4 of my sister's roommates signed up but only 1 was selected. The one who was accepted works quick service food and beverage (and previously worked at a resort) while the 3 who weren't are lifeguards and an attractions CM.
