Disney streaming service - no R-rated movies

A lot goes into it I guess. From reading your posts, I think between the two of us, (me and Micky) we watch a lot more tv/movies than your family does. So we would probably end up wanting most of the streaming services! :)

I have an 8 year old daughter and twin 6 year old sons. My time available to watch t.v. disappeared somewhere along the line...

Yes, but now Viacom wants their own streaming, I'm sure more to come - you will have to be paying subscriptions for every company that decides to pull their content from the likes of Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc. to start their own streaming services. By the time you pay for every one that you want, plus internet, Comcast doesn't seem like a bad deal anymore! ;)

It just seems, like with anything, what started out as a great alternative to a monopoly is now turning into it's own beast.
There it is! I just keep signing up for new deals with Comcast once I saw the tide shift.

Having worked for both DIRECTV and Comcast previously, I learned very early on that most of the package price wasn't going to the distributors, but rather the content providers. Yes, you've removed the middle man, but you don't think the content providers won't just keep increasing prices directly?

In the case of both DIRECTV and Comcast, they usually raise prices once a year, if that. However, they often had price increases from the content providers 2-3 times over the same period.

Why then did people get upset at the provider? Because that's where they sent the bill. They didn't have to know that Disney raised prices $1.50 a year thanks to ESPN, or that they were paying for Discovery Channel so that Animal Planet, Science Channel, or Velocity could be funded.

Having said that, my wife and I cut the cord two years ago and are more selective of our programming and costs. We definitely see a decrease in the cost of programming than we did before we dropped cable. I also have no qualms about dropping TV altogether. I recently spent 1.5 years without a TV -- and that was while I worked for, and received free programming from, DIRECTV.

Hmmm...I love movies/tv.

Like tonight I will settle in later with wine and a good 70's/80's sci-fi movie. Or maybe a great monster movie. Or a disaster movie!!! The possibilities are endless.... He will watch what he wants in the other room! :rotfl: Tomorrow we will go out for dinner, get home around 10 or so and again, a glass of wine and movie.

That's another reason I like On-Demand with Comcast. For sometimes as low as $2.99, I have my choice of thousands and thousands of movies to rent. Or free depending. Netflix doesn't have most of what I watch available for streaming, have to rent it. Which means wait for a disc in the mail.

Movie channels themselves, I can take or leave. But the catalog of movies at my fingertips with on Demand is just too hard to give up.

Seems like YMMV for everyone... I'm interested in the Disney streaming. I have Netflix and have no desire for any of the other services. I'm contemplating cancelling Netflix, Stranger Things is my favorite but I can find other ways to view it (They also release them on DVD). I pay 50 bucks per month for internet and I have a rooftop antenna, no cable since 2006. In addition I have a library of approximately 675 movies in my Plex server library. However I don't watch TV every night and I never watch it during the day including weekends.

My kids and I would both be equally interested in Disney streaming; don't really care about the R rated content, I can see those in other ways. We still have a local movie rental store too which helps.

Well you still have cable, like me, so the point is really mute! I'm more thinking of those who gave up cable for streaming because it's too much money. Just wondering if in the future streaming is going to end up costing nearly the same as cable.

What does everyone's internet cost? I'd still need Comcast internet, work from home, about $80 a month right there. Until google fiber comes around here (Chicago), no choice.
Ours is bundled (ATT), so I’m not sure, but back home (Alaska), Internet alone is $175/month if you want unlimited. Otherwise Internet is metered.

I’m in the UK so is different but I would really like to cord cut at some point. Currently subscribed to SKY and pay £65 a month for TV, Fibre internet and phone calls. TV makes up £35 of that.

The biggest reason I’m struggling to ditch SKY is because of how easy it is to use. Husband struggles to use anything else.

What I want is to move to Free TV which still gives 100 live channels. Subscribe to Netflix which has a lot of content I like (The Walking dead, Modern Family, American Horror Story, House of cards) but I’m happy to subscribe per month when I actually need it.

I 100% want the Disney steaming service and I’m even slightly interested in ESPN+ given its low price. The Disney service has sold me on the original content of Star Wars and marvel tv series

We have amazon prime video but the content is so poor in the UK that it’s not even worthwhile. I only get that for next day delivery.

I'm a big soccer geek so this is big news for me. I refused to pay for MLS Live... but ESPN+ is looking more interesting now. Further, it shows how serious Disney is about bringing in smaller properties to fill this service. Kind of like ESPN used to be, with lots of live sports, even if it was bowling and World's Strongest Man, and not a constant stream of analysts yelling at each other.

All these streaming options now where you have to pick and choose what you can watch where, more money to pay, not much of better deal than cable at this point.

You didn't think those media companies are going to leave that cord-cutting cash on the table? It'll be more a la carte, but ultimately we'll end up spending the same on streaming as we did cable.

Well Disney doesn't have a lot of R rated films in their catalog right now to begin with.

But Touchstone and Hollywood pictures do. Still, it is no surprise they want this to be an extension of their family entertainment business.

On a tangent, IIRC Disney was once the majority owner of Spectravision (hotel on-demand "adult" movies).

Internet $75/month unlimited 1Gig. I've cut the cord and got rid of cable. Use playstation vue, Plex, CBSAA, Netflix, Amazon and I'm set.
