Do they try to up-sell you at Palo?

We are finally platinum and going to Palo for the first time as one of the perks. One thing I love about Disney is the relatively minor amount of up-selling. I think I heard they do this at Remy with fancy water, wines, special fancy beef and truffles. That is a reason I don't think I could eat there - mostly because I know I couldn't tell the difference between fancy water and tap and boxed wine tastes the same as expensive wine to me; but mostly I hate being pressured, especially on such a relaxing vacation such as a Disney cruise.

Will be be faced with the same up-selling pressure at Palo? I am hoping for a relaxed dinner with no thoughts except looking forward to that chocolate souffle I have heard so much about :)

It has been 2 years since I've sailed, but have been on many DCL cruises and always a couple of times at Palo (dinner and brunch, and in the old days, High Tea!), each cruise. I have never found them to be "upselling". They will offer wine pairings as any fine restaurant would, but in my experience, that's pretty much it.

REMY however??? YIKES!!!!!!!! DH and I travel a LOT and have dined in some nice places, but our 1 and ONLY 1 meal at Remy they uncharged (our choice of course) the heck out of us! DH did not realize he was adding $75 at a pop for multiple courses. Our dinner for 2 was $500. :scared: :crazy2: :sad2: :o

That is what I heard about Remy and makes me never want to dine there - we just aren't foodies anyway, but I hate pressure while eating!

Truth be told we are cheap :) But also we don't dress up either - now that Palo has relaxed their dress code I feel we won't be judged too much there :) I am looking forward to trying it! Although I have been known to enjoy akid's Uncrustables peanut butter and jelly sandwich from room service as my dinner many times!

I've dined at Palo a few times in the past few years, and don't remember any upselling. If anything was offered, it certainly wasn't aggressive. I would remember that.

Well, for anyone dining at Remy that doesn't want to blow up the bank, they had better be listening and asking questions. It was black truffle season when we dined there and they had quite a presentation about their truffle course offerings which were NOT the regular menu. I was listening that it as $75 PER course or something like $200 if you wanted all 3 truffle courses. PER PERSON. DH was apparently zoned out, and he not only ordered a couple of truffle courses but ALSO ordered the Wagyu beef option!!! Which was at least another $75!!!!! :scared: :scared: :scared: I was about to have a coronary, and of course, he was NOT picking up on my unspoken messages (laser eyeball looks, eyebrows raised to the ceiling, squirming in my chair, nearly fainting, LOL, you get the picture), so he just merrily racked up a MASSIVE dinner bill.

Pitiful and ironic thing was that my elk entree/main course (off the regular menu, NOT up-charged), was better than his oh-so-pricey Wagyu beef. :sad2:

Remy for us is one and done. Palo is the place for us peasants!! :D

Nothing wrong with being fiscally prudent! :cutie: Have fun at Palo!

We ate at Palo last week on the Dream. Our server was a little pushier than I would have liked, but DH and I are pretty wimpy and hate confrontation. As others have mentioned, Disney normally does not do this, so I was a little taken aback and not prepared for it.

But still, only two opportunities were offered to us for up charge:

Water: We politely said plain water was fine, but I felt embarrassed for some reason and that our server was disappointed from the get-go that we would weren't the big spenders he was hoping for.

Wine: He really pushed us getting a nicer bottle of wine from Palo (we had already purchased the classic wine package in the dining room). He said stuff like "I mean you COULD just have a bottle from the classic package, but to really have the Italian meal experience..." and "How often do you have a night out without your kids, live a little!" With classic package, $30 would be removed from whatever more expensive (better, in his opinion) bottle of wine we purchased at Palo. I wanted to say no, but we agreed to buy a bottle at Palo. I told him $80 was the max (would cost us an additional $50). Some bottles were $500! Of course he recommended the "perfect" wine at exactly $80.

But, if you go in to the dinner prepared to "just say no" (I will be ready next time:)) then you can have an amazing dinner with no up charges at all!

I don't remember being offered anything else than sparkling water and wine pairing at Remy and certainly not being pressurized to buy them.

Also, the "fancy beef" was included in the upcharge. We always had Waguy and Kobe beef and it was never added to our bill as an extra charge.

Yuck. Never had that kind of experience at Remy or Palo. Don't think I would have felt comfortable either.

I was upsold from a $6 glass of wine to a $10 one. I resisted. The waiter brought out the $10 glass anyway and said I wouldn't regret it. It was amazing. Then he only charged me $6 for it. I would consider it more good advice than an upsell.

How relaxed is the dress code now? I'll be eating there for brunch and had planned on wearing a sport coat and khakis. Are regular polos acceptable now?

Can't speak to your experience, but I can assure you we WERE uncharged sizably for DH's choice of the Wagyu beef. :cutie:

We've never felt any pressure. On the contrary, during one of our dinners, my husband had asked for sparkling water and I said I wanted still water. Our server asked if I would be fine with the regular water (which is tap water) and I said I'd prefer not. I told him that I don't drink tap water and he said, for him, it tastes similar. He told me that he didn't want me to pay for something if I didn't need to. I appreciated his suggestion and I'm glad he asked.

Also, after we told him that we don't drink, he didn't try to get us to try something we didn't want. I felt he was there to make suggestions based on what he perceived we liked. I'm not sure how they do it, but they seem to be very good at it. It's amazing what they suggest when we just met him with only a little chat.

Happy to hear not everyone was given the up-sells at Remy, but when I saw our bill, which I knew was going to be huge since DH was happily saying "Yes!", to almost everything the server offered, option-wise, but a $500 does not happen with out up-charges and was a major OUCH. MAJOR. DH got a talking to after that ordeal. Bless his heart, he was entirely CLUELESS or selectively deaf when the server was rattling off the prices for all the "options".

Glad we have done Remy. And glad so many had MUCH less expensive evenings there! You all may take our table space at any of our future cruises there. :flower3:

Flying Fish had the best Wagyu filet I have ever tasted. I came back a few months later looking forward to it and they replaced it with a mediocre strip cut. They don't even offer Wagyu anymore so it's no longer a must-do for me...even though that Kurobuta pork belly appetizer is incredible.
