The Summer Games of the XXXII Olympiad

Yeah, I guess I'm just glass half empty on this one. I did read that the ratings did bounce back a bit from the opening ceremony, which had a 33 year low for TV ratings. I hope it's bringing some people joy. Just like a lot of things during this pandemic, "it is what it is".
I'm sure it is for the athletes and their families all over the world :)

I don't really care much about the ratings personally. I'm not sure the media focuses on that on a normal year, I'm guessing they are choosing to do so for certain reasons this year but whatev. I've got 5 things recorded and a 6th one recording now just waiting to watch some tonight so count me in on having some joy!

I agree with you that these are sad Olympics. However, in a lot of these sports the athletes would not be competitive a year from now. Some of them are probably not in top form now because of lack of frequent competitions. Being competitive at the "best in the world" level is a fleeting moment in time.

That’s the weird thing, with many athletes having a short window for their peak physical performance. It may vary by athlete and sport, but if it’s a two year window, it’s kind of an accident of when someone was born relative to the Olympic schedule.

Japan just beat the USA in softball 2-0 to win gold. We had a chance to take the lead in the 6th but they hit into an inning ending double play with runners on 1st and 2nd

The gold was decided for softball only 4 days into the Games??!!!

On the flip side I think I remember hearing an announcer while watching swimming that a 14 or 15 year old got her first shot at swimming because the Olympics occurred this year as opposed to having to wait for her first shot until 2024

I know they said this was true for one of the Russian gymnasts. If the Olympics had been held on time, she would not have been eligible. Meanwhile, the "women's" skateboarding medals were won by 2 13 year olds and a 16 year old!

Some team sports actually start play early for the early rounds because there just isn't enough time for everything.

Is the venue needed for baseball?

I know some team sports start play before the Opening Ceremonies because they need time for all the round robin games and playoffs.

So if they stated on the 21st, one game against each opponent, a day off, then 1&2 for gold and 3&4 for bronze?

Simultaneous events are kind of a way of life with the Olympics. Now broadcasting is another matter.

That's great...hope you enjoy it! Wish I could get into like I do in previous years....I'm usually a pretty big fan of the olympics.

It's not just physiological. There is also a progression in most sports -- what was gold last year may not qualify this year.

I didn't pay close enough attnetion - I just know some of the team sports with large pools start early and that may be why.

The only stupid decision I've seen was whoever decided to start the men's triathlon with a freakin boat blocking half the athletes from starting. One of those listed is definitely not stupid, one is kinda iffy, and one story is over 2 years old so pretty much irrelevant at this point.

While I disagree with the important/stupidity of those other situations, I do completely agree the gold medal of stupidity goes to that boat. I couldn’t believe it!

On top of the obvious, wasn't it the PARAOlympics Tri?

Tim Daggett before Sunrisa Lee's competition: "even her father John is here." Duh, he's sitting (in his wheelchair) in his own living room. If he were back in the hospital he'd still be watching on t.v. Since he was able to travel across country to watch his DD in the olympic trials, it's not inconceivable he could watch her on t.v. at home.

Then Tim said, "Parents hang onto your children" before another event. What is that supposed to mean?

I thought it was interesting to hear so much chatter amongst Nastia, Tim, and Terry during the warm ups about something wasn't right with Simone before she had even done anything. They showed how she has been off for the last several weeks - going back to the trials.

At least I didn't have to hear him say, "Gymnastics 101 - Fly high and stick the landing!" That makes my ears bleed. Either he didn't say it about anyone in the competition or I just got lucky and missed it. Either way - I am thankful!
