I love credit cards so much! v4.0 - 2021 (see first page for add'l details)

I'm thinking of applying for a SW credit card if there is a decent SUB coming up since we have a big payment coming up in November for our heating oil. I've been toying with the idea of trying to see if I can earn enough points to get a companion pass but get so confused every time I try to read up on it. If you need to earn up to 125,000pts in a calendar year, does that mean I only have until the end of December to earn all those points if I apply in early November? Then the pass is only good for 2022? If I'm serious about this, I do want to try so that my companion pass is good for two years. Can anyone offer up a quick SW Companion Pass Explanation for dummies?

SUB points count towards the calendar year the bonus posts, so you would have to apply for the business card and then at least one personal card to get a CP strictly from SUB points. The Companion Pass is good from the time it is earned through the end of year, plus the following year. So, unless you need it for travel this year, it's better to earn it in or around January of the following year so that you have two years of the pass.

If you want to use your November heating oil spend towards the companion pass, then get the business card now and consider getting the personal card in November or even double dipping two personal cards (with the second application being submitted the next business day after approval on the first) and splitting the payment. Typically, you can only get 1 SW personal card because of the one per family restriction, but applying on consecutive days can sometimes avoid the restriction. Of course, you would effectively only have 1 year of the companion pass if it clicks in during 2021.

If you don't hold the CSP, I recommend getting the 100,000 UR bonus with your heating oil spend and then getting the Companion Pass in 2022-2023. UR can be transferred to SW for double value after you have the CP.

@Arcades Thanks so much for the explanation! Both P2 and I have the CSP so that nice SUB is out for us. I will have to think a little more about trying for the Companion pass after your explanation.

No problem. If the spend is large enough, I would look at some of the Amex business credit/charge card offers that have higher spending requirements (and Amex is stricter than Chase on meeting MSRs with anything other than organic spending).

SouthFayette Fan has a nice long discussion of all things companion pass on our Reddit thread under Advanced Strategies. I recommend you read the whole thing.

It's around $2000 so I would like to apply it to some kind of SUB. I still have time so hoping something good comes up soon!

Thanks, I had read it a few times and still couldn't wrap my head around some of the concepts.

I just got my 2nd Amex card. I logged in and already have 100 offers so I am trying to clear some out. I just randomly adding stuff but most of it says it is already added to another card. Can I never clear those out? Why the heck is it showing if it won't let me add them? I wish you could just delete some of them.

If you apply for a Sw card late this fall, you could delay meeting the MSR until after your December bill hits. Then the SUB would credit in January and be applied to a 22/23 CP.

it takes a couple days for your accounts to sync up with each other...

Well that wasn't what I expected. Just applied for the aspire with a support link sent via pm on instagram and didn't go to a browser just clicked it in Instagram and applied. I was lazy and didn't log in since I would have had to turn my laptop on to get my password.

I didn't unfreeze anything since they normally don't do a hard pull once you have a card. Didn't get the popup but got a we're reviewing and will let you know if you need more info.

So is it because I didn't log in? I feel like I don't always log in when I apply. Or should I have unfrozen my cr? Not used to seeing people talk about this happening with amex because of the popup.

Guess I'll just wait for them to let me know...

That's the message you get when its not an instant approval or rejection. If you get approved, you will get an e-mail confirmation (usually in 2-3 business days).

I'm aware of that, that wasn't my question and why I said I would just wait.

I never login, so I don't think it's that. Could be they decided to do a hard pull (rare but it can happen). The last time I got the pending was when they were at 4 credit cards and the one I canceled wasn't reflected yet. The time before was a super weird possible pop-up glitch out on the Aspire. App never showed online, approved out of the blue 9 days later.

Thanks for the link, I'd thoughy you could do that in the app but couldn't fins it so was going to look online after work. It says to check back in 24. I didn't realize my last amex had been in oct, so possible they wanted to do a hp. My income went down less than 10k because of selling the house so maybe they weren't sure of that. I only have 3 cc so it's not that. Interesting about the glitch on the aspire.

My last 2 AMEX cards went pending. Same as you not logged in and credit frozen. I received approval emails 24-48hrs later. I assumed it was because my credit was frozen, but 🤷🏼‍♀️

ETA: I didn’t have to unfreeze credit to get approval

It's so weird. I've apped before with them with it frozen and gotten an instant approval. I'm just used to only hearing about chase pending and not amex.

Amex going pending is quite common the more cards you have of theirs and the larger the credit lines. I don't freeze my credit or log in before applying, so I'm 100% certain it has nothing to do with those things (I get pending almost every time now). You can reduce your other credit lines with Amex if you want a higher chance at auto approval, but there's no guarantees.

Tracker has updated and everything is counting now. I went ahead and finished P2's reloads in hopes everything would work itself out. Now I have to finish mine. I did a $1 load to my Serve account online to see if it would work and it tracked. I don't mind the $0.50 Amazon reloads, but is there a reason not to use Serve?
Same. I got an email Tuesday that I met all 10 and the last 5 were from 8/10. Not sure why it was different this month. I don't know of a reason not to use Serve.
