DH has issues with his legs that cause them to swell and cannot easily bend his legs at the knee.

I wondered how much leg room the 3 wheel scooters have on the footplate and whether a 4 wheel scooter would be a better option - do they even rent 4 wheelers that fit into a trunk of a car? He is around 20-30 pounds short of the weight limit on a 3 wheeler (depending how bad his ascites is at that moment in time)

They do have 4 wheel scooters that can be broken down and put in a trunk. This is what I rented for my sister. i cannot remember what the footplace was like though.

You can get specs for whatever model you want to rent. Popular ones are Pride to go and Pride Victory scooters.

I have to tell you a 4 wheel scooter is so much better for leg space and it's more comfortable.

If hubby is close to the maximum weight I would go with the Victory model. It's heavier, but it's still breaks down. There are two batteries on that model. You will be safer that you won't run out of juice for the parks.

Make sure you recharge every night. Also, shut the scooter off for shows, parades, and fireworks.

I rented the portable scooter from Buena Vista which is what I usually rent now when we go to WDW. I just like that particular scooter. However on our trip last month I had an issue where it was often painful to bend one of my knees and I had it in a brace. I often had to sit a bit sideways with both feet to the right so I could keep that leg stretched out...and I'm somewhat tall (5'9"). I could bend the knee some so it was ok. If my leg had to be straight - well - that scooter wouldn't have worked.

I would go with a 4 wheel model. I need to be able to stretch my leg out straight some of the time. *I* have yet to find (or see) a 3 wheeled model that would work for me to stretch my leg straight and be comfortable with the way the foot plates are designed.

Thank you so much - it is the first year I have had to look at this forum (although been a DIS-er for many years). I am finding it so informative.

I'm at Disney now on a 3-wheeler, but not the portable one, the Victory model. I am in a full leg brace and can fully extend my leg. Though I am 5' 1", so not sure if everyone can.

Yeah, I am not quite 5'8" and that wouldn't work for me. I have average length legs for my height.

I am getting a little confused as to which company to use as when searching I am either only seeing 3 wheelers (as in the company we had been looking at walker mobility) or 4 wheelers with a comment saying that it is not recommended putting them in a trunk of a vehicle.we are doing a split stay so just wanted to transport from universal to disney via taxi.
Can you help which company to try as trying to avoid making several long distance phone calls from the uk and some companies don't quote an email address.

Well, @pigby... it's your lucky day. Because I had a bit of extra time this morning, I took a break from getting ready for my next WDW adventure (leaving in less than a week! WootWoot!) (PS: all of this info I got just from Googling and/or WDW’s website. Just took a bit of time to organize it) You will need to contact each vendor via email.

Don’t get too hung up on “4 wheel vs 3 wheel”. If it’s your hubby that is going to use the scooter, ask HIM to look at the pictures to see what HE thinks will be most comfortable. The person who is going to use the scooter should select it, if at all possible. Scooters in general are an awkward device, simply because the rental models tend to not be adjustable for height, arm length, leg length, etc.

It may prove to be easier to ask the rental company to pick up the scooter at Universal and transport it for you to Disney. Just a thought…

This is not a complete list, by any means. For example, I did not include Apple due to the high number of dissatisfied customers on this forum. I did include Walker - even though they aren’t a “Featured Provider” because so many people have had positive experiences with them.

Remember that companies on Disney’s “Featured Providers List” https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/guest-services/ecv-rentals/ can drop off/pick up from Bell Services without requiring you to be there

Rents the “Elite Traveler Plus 4 Wheel Scooter” which breaks down into “5 lightweight pieces for transport” (personal note: doesn’t look like it has all that much more foot room than the 3 wheel model right above it. YMMV)

That's it! Hope this proves helpful

Really appreciate your help mamabunny - I will get to work over the next few days and sort something out - just over 3 weeks to go ourselves.

Think about trying a local mobility store in your country for a size fit. We have vendors who sell scooters in a store front; hopefully, you do, too. Anyway, DH can try a three or four wheel to see if it makes a difference for him.

If a scooter is a travel portable one they break down into 4 or 5 pieces. You do have to be agile and somewhat strong to get them in and out of a car trunk. For me, my husband and I both handle the base of the scooter in and out of the trunk together. I can see how the rental places may not want you to do it. They are protecting their investment. I believe the travel, portable scooters are sold with the idea they will go into car trunks.
