Great Movie Ride closes for Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway

Even if the land is incredibly immersive and has incredible attractions? Just because you have no desire to see the movie doesn't mean you wouldn't like the land. The land isn't actually going to be based on the movie but rather the land within the movie. So you won't necessarily be seeing specific characters from the movie.

If I didn't like star wars but the rides in the land are some of the best in the country I would still go on them because I am a theme park fan, but thats just me.
I'm with you. I saw Avatar, thought it was just "okay" but I am ALWAYS excited to see a new ride coming to WDW. I absolutely HATE anything Star Wars, but I still ride the ride. Hey, the closed minded just leave more space for the rest of us!

Universal's theme is to ride the movies. This sounds pretty much the same.
yes, and I really wish Disney would stick to doing what Disney does best and stop trying to compete with Universal. I'm sorry but Universal whips Disney's **** in the ride technology department and until Disney starts upping their game and stops just making simulators, they are going to constantly fall short. No one does dark rides better than Disney and I really wish they would just go with this. People don't go to WDW for thrills, it's for nostalgia and rides that small children can enjoy with their grandparents and entire family and maybe even learn something along the way. I feel that ever since Universal stomped Disney with the Harry Potter acquisition, Disney has been hell bent on trying to find some movie to latch onto to one up Uni. Sorry, HP was the biggest thing I think we're liable to see for many many years to come and neither Star Wars nor Avatar is going to come close. They need to just stop. Yes I'm aware that Star Wars is huge, but they missed their mark here IMO...too little too late and someone else came up and bit them in the rear. For me, I really just wish they would stop acquiring all of these non Disney things and use what is already yours. I want more Disney when I pay for Disney...but that's just me.

Um, Disney really dosn't have much simulators, that's a Universal thing.

Myself I was acctually disappointed at HP world. I mean I couldn't go on Forbidden Jouney as I have motion sickness and Dualing Dragons is too intense, and flight of the hippogriff was too tame. The atmosphere is nice but the rides let me down(in terms of options).

My only wishes for whatever ride replaces GMR is that:
- It is an icon to represent the theme of the park as a whole (whatever that ends up being)
- They push the technological envelope like Walt once did.
- Make it something meaningful
I've been watching ride videos from Shanghai and Hong Kong Disneylands, and they seem to be really into the walls that are pretty much just giant digital screens. There's SO much they can do with that, I'd love to see it implemented more at WDW. (Shanghai Disneyland's PotC ride is awesome looking. I have no idea what they're saying, but it looks cool!)

Hong Kong doesn't use screens as much as Shanghai.

As for pirates which you used as an example I think they do it really well using screens and actual sets. I'd rather have a mix than just all screens.

Yep. The new pirates is the perfect balance between real sets and screens. That's what really dissapointed me about Kong at Universal. Having such a beautiful facade, you'd think the indoor section would be just as detailed.
I think the best part of Kong was the 12 year olds at Orlando United forums commenting on the first POV on YouTube about how Kong was SO much better than pirates since there were more animatronics in Kong and how us Disney people are wussies that do something expletive to Mickey. Yes because last time I checked Disney doesn't built lasting rides that extended the theming on the inside as well and has animatronics like the Jack Sparrow that changes from a skeleton to a "human" that pale in comparison to Bat #3. Ugh that day reading those comments. Hopefully this ride is nothing that divisive! (as far as I'm aware, haven't checked Kong reception since that day)

Funny. Besides a couple of rooms, most of the ride is just a bunch of massive screens. The queue has more theming than the ride itself. Same goes for Gringotts. Forbidden Journey, on the other hand, is another perfect example of combining real props and screens.

My sister told me gringotts was extremely underwhelming. Claimed that if you closed your eyes it's the exact same ride as Spider-Man. Spider-Man has a completely different layout but whatever. Haven't been to universal since April 2011 and have no immediate plans to go back soon.
Edit: although forbidden journey with the lights on is a totally different ride. Lots of scenery but very interesting when the benches are static

Wikipedia describes Gringotts as a roller coaster, while Spider-Man is described as a dark ride. (The cars don't coast.). Do they just mean the layout? Or just that they rely on 3D projections?

She never specified. I think she might of mentioned it as simulations and effects but not ride type

It's time that Disney drops Mickey as their corporate symbol and change to something that the fans can better relate to, I think.

I agree that it is time for a change, but let's face it, every time Disney makes a change, well it just doesn't work out.

I hate the new 3D screen simulator rides. Give me Rocking N Rolling Coaster, TOT, POTC, ET, Men in Black, Revenge of The Mummy, The Hulk or even Its a Small World and The Cat in the Hat any day and all day. I have and will continue to ride all the Rides but IMO the 3D Ride Simulators just don't have the same Real Life feel. It just plays mind games and tricks on you and make you think you are falling or shooting up.

We don't know if this will be a 3D simulator yet. We only know it will be Mickey Mouse themed and be trackless.
