Stop in California?

Hi,

I'm coming from the east coast. Do people recommend stopping in California for a few days either on the way to Hawaii or back to help with jet lag? Which way?

If you want to actually see/do something in CA then by all means make a stop. Otherwise, just grin and bear it on the long flight to HNL. You can recover from jet lag on the beach. :beach:

Going to Hawaii from east coast, I recommend going the whole way on the same day. Returning home, if you don't like red-eye flights, you should stop somewhere for at least overnight. My family will be stopping for overnight plus a day, and do some sightseeing in either SF or LA (we'll choose based on price). Depart HNL in the afternoon, arrive in California at night, stay two nights in a hotel, sightsee/etc, then depart the next morning, arriving late in the day on the east coast.

yeah, returning back to the east coast is always harder. I don't seem to get jet lagged coming to hawaii - I just make sure to stay up till 9 or 10 and go to bed and get a full night sleep.

I'm stopping in California this summer on my way there to visit Disneyland. It can definitely help. I don't know if I would want to go all the way to Hawaii from where I live in the mid-west all in one day. Stopping at Disneyland for me will force me to stay up late in California which will then help me transition well when I get to Hawaii since I'm not jumping 5 hours all at once.

We've made the trip from the DC/Baltimore area 10 plus times, and never stopped.

I do agree, though, that if you do choose to do this, doing it on your way back may allow you to choose a flight that isn't a red eye.

It's a long trip from the East Coast, so we go for a long time (most often we would go for 2 weeks, but this summer I'm going for a month).

The return trip is easy for us. We take the redeye from HNL to ATL and arrive well rested. Still some adjustment to the 6 hour difference but we are usually back to normal the 2nd day home.

We are from the middle, so we have one hour less of a time change- flights are still long, but not quite as far as yours. We had a 2 hour break at LAX on the way out there which gave us time to walk around, stretch our legs, eat and have a little time off the plane. It really helped the trip not feel so long. We found that we were so excited to be in Hawaii that we never suffered from any type of jet lag. We actually wound up staying up a full 24 hours as we got to Hawaii around noon and then everyone was having too much fun to crash.

On the way home we had planned to have 3 days at Disneyland-but due to a tropical storm and having to leave Hawaii a day and a half early, we wound up with 5 park days. The DLR stop really helped ease the time change and also made everyone less sad about having to leave Hawaii since we weren't ending the entire vacation early. Although, once again, we flew back overnight (although did get some sleep on the plane this time- we were going to fly back to LAX during the daytime hours, but the storm changed everything), and got to DLR about 9:30 am and DD (11) was not having any of actually sleeping more than 20 minutes before begging to hit the parks.

We are stopping in Disneyland on the way to Hawaii from NYthis summer. 1st time both. 3 nights GCV.
I think this way is better It helps with time difference. Easier to adjust 3 hours at a time. ALSO FLIGHT is 1 hour shorter on way home direct.
Also I always take day after trip for adjustment. But my flight leaves Honolulu 3pm arrives 7 am next day so leaves full day adjustment.
Happy planning.

You take the Delta flight in first class? That's the only way I can get any rest, in the lie flat seats.

I have them next trip on AA. Thank goodness! Or thank miles that worked!
