The Gulf State Park DISMeet 2017 Thread (aka "The Sequel")

Ed happy to see you arrived safe and sound. If you have any problems with squatters in the Aliner may I suggest you send Mrs Bama Ed to deal with the offending party oh and don't let Kris talk you into checking on Momma Gator as they based on the kids posture are Texas Longhorn fans Really not worth getting agitated over

Well Glo it is already booking up for next year - I guess folks are finding the online system.

23 and 25 are available on Live Oak (I'm on site 4 and tiggerdad has booked site 18). So behind me are sites 1-2-3 which are mostly sun. I think being in the sun is not an issue at this time of the year and if you have good awnings.

Go to www.alapark.com, choose Gulf, choosing Camping, and choose the Book online reservation. I did put in some extremen dates (in on a Thursday and out about 10 later on Saturday so you could play with shorter dates and see what pops up. When you get to the screen above, you can click on a site and there will pop up a window with site info and a picture of the site (only 1) but you can click on that to make it bigger and see what it looks like.

Hey, it's only a reservation. You can always cancel it.

I believe our site is 24 for next year.

That is a good site pahunter. Lots of shade. We need to see if 93 is open again. It has nice shade.

We left the shindig early. Have to get up early tomorrow for the 5k. Weather is turning to humid and muggy just in time for the race.

I left too Kris. I got a call from home and then just went ahead and got cleaned up.

There was time this afternoon to get my next puzzle set up. tiggerdad brought over his new fancy shmancy puzzle table thingamabob so I started the task of separating the pieces.

This is the one we will be working on - another Thomas Kincaid Disney 1000 piece challenge.

Tiggerdad cooked a pile of ribs and fed us till we were stuffed tonight. It tasted great.

Kris and Bert brought the rock stars Mallory and Yeti so the party was complete.

While tiggerdad was cooking, however, the site across from him on the water had some excitement. Let's go see what it was:

Don't take your pets too close to the water.

Randy got his cheeks and nose pretty red today from the sun because his hat didn't provide enough coverage. I offered to lend him mine.

I brought my cowbell to cheer on Kris and Bert at their race tomorrow morning - the route will take them very close to the campground. I'll work on the puzzle, go to church, and relax during the day. DW did not come down with me today but will be joining us in a few days. But Teamubr rolls in tomorrow then we can officially get this vacation started.

Ian is graduated. We made it to Clarksville. And we seemed to find a semi dry slot to make the trip tonight. Wind was pretty intense around StL, but once I got headed east, it was mostly a tail wind... sort of. Rained pretty steady until we got to southern tip of Illinois. It looks like there are big storms sliding south of where we are tonight.

I plan on hitting the road around 7. That should put us to GSP around 4. It depends on how many stops DW thinks I need to take. We'll be good on fuel, even at the stellar 9 mpg I got today in the wind and rain.

My thanks to Ed for posting of dinner pics. Sorry about the potatoes, for some reason some of them cooked fine and others didn't. Have ribs left over and I'll keep them for lunch and another bag for Teamubr when he rolls in.

I was proud the 10x10 held everyone inside the mosquito netting.

Kris, thanks to you guys for providing Yeti as site protection.

Plan to get up in the morning and join Ed for puzzle work and cheering on our Dis athletes.

Til tomorrow.

Good morning. If you are coming to cheer, thanks. I am wearing a neon orange shirt. Bert is in a navy blue shirt blue with neon yellow back.

I am curious to see if Bert held onto his lead during the last mile, tiggerdad, or if Kris caught him at the end. There was some good natured competitive banter last night between them. Naturally I'm pulling for Bert as a DH.

Well this morning started out cloudy so there was no sunrise to speak of but early morning is the traditional time for puzzle work. Randy (Southalabama5er) and Michael (Tiggerdad) were there to help me get it started. There were also a few spectators and we made progress this morning.

I mentioned the race viewing point for Bert and Kris' run was just out past the end of the campground road. On the ride out we were watching for signs of wildlife.

Michael already introduced you to George the Snake. Last night we met Gary the Gator. Today we met Tom the Tortise. Tom paid us no never mind but instead ate some grass and ignored us.

Bert and Kris went through but we stayed to watch the rest of the runners. On the ride back the skies opened up and I sought shelter at the campstore pavilion.

But hey, a change into a dry shirt and dry socks does wonders. I'm off next to Our Lady of the Gulf (my church here for 5 different decades and then time to wait before His Ubrness arrives.

There was a report of vandalism this morning on a neighbor's site.

I had multiple witnesses that I was not involved.

After we watched Kris and Burt Randy and I took off on one of the new trails...just in time for the rain.

How y'all like Randy's shirt?

Now, this year I brought my Holland indirect heat grill and I'm trying it out on breakfast. Basically it's just like an oven.

Enjoyed our DIS meet up last night over at Tiggerdad, a very fine dinner if I do say so. After dinner he invited us into his VIP tent for some Disney talk and visiting with good people, looking forward to several more evening like that.

Had a good time this morning working on the puzzle with Ed and Micheal, I still think that Micheal has pocketed a few puzzle pieces!
Enjoyed cheering on our fellow DIS'ers Kris and Bert, did our good deed of helping the two ladies clean up the cups at the Water station, then got drenched on the "tiggerdads long way" back to the campers, and my now soaking shirt said "if you can read this, you're camping too close".

Jim, keep us updated on your drive, have a safe trip and don't pay any attention to the row of chairs and spectators watching your back into your site.

A few rain showers this morning, hopefully they will be gone before noon.

PaHunter, glad your in site 22 for next year, I will be your neighbor next year I'm in site 20 right behind Tiggerdad so I hope that peace and quiet is not going to be high on the priority list, my full apology a year in advance.

The morning started a little stressful, back tire was flat and the plan was to ride to the race. I was hoping a disser would help me out and Ed and Lisa came to the rescue and I borrowed a bike.

Race was great, just a tad on the warm side as expected. The first mile was a bit fast and bert took an early lead but not too far ahead. At mile 2 we saw our cheering section. Thanks so much for coming out, I was looking forward to seeing everyone. At this point bert was about 20 yards ahead. I was trying to catch him the last mile. I was behind him but the last 100 yards some guy snuck in between us. He had some kick and I could not respond. Bert finished about 15 seconds ahead of me in 29 place and I was 31. However I finished second in my age group. I was pleased was hoping for under 24 and finished in 24:02. With the heat I will take it. My award is actually useful too, it's a bottle opener.

Thanks BamaEd, Tiggerdad and Southalabama5er for cheering us on. Thanks for the action shots as well, am sure my MIL is thrilled to see those as she follows along.

Waiting for the rain to pass now.

Randy, just double checked and we are in site 24 next year, so we will be close. Not sure who ended up in 22, but well they will have to adapt. The people in 22, who ever that may be, doesn't know what they are getting in to. We are looking forward to coming down and meeting everyone.

After church and lunch today, a cloudy rain settled in and it probably rained 1.5-2.0 hours before clearing off. I got in a premium nap then started reading a new book.

Teamubr finally showed up this afternoon and expertly backed his 42 footer into his site - I know it's true because I was there.

It actually cleared up to be very nice and less humid this afternoon. Here's looking across the lake from my site towards the State Park Beach Pavilion:

For dinner this evening we were treated to a crawfish boil from Nic (thanks man) with 70# of mud bugs, potatoes, corn, sausage, mushrooms, even whole cloves of garlic all seasoned like a boil should be. Remember it's "pinch the tail and suck the heads". Ya'll help yourselves:

Here was my first helping (there were more to follow):

The spices do a slow burn on your taste buds and despite the adult beverage I had, I could feel the fire. To put it out, I downed some banana pudding expertly provided, I believe, by mrs. tiggerdad. It did the trick, I will say.

There was some nice conversation and a breeze after dinner. Some folks left to watch the sun set, later others were getting up to go chase crabs at night on the beach. There is a chance of overnight rain so we all took steps to bring in things, batten them down, and prepare "just in case".

I'm gonna sleep like a stump tonight.

Lot's of fun reading all this! What a great thing this has turned out to be! Have a great and safe stay everyone! Coming to the end of this will be like coming to the end of a book that you wish would keep going....

OK - We have made our reservations for next year - arriving May 24, 2018 & leaving 5/30. Our site number is #3 which should be good. Not sure of the length to put the patio out. Our plan is to spend 2 weeks before @ the FORT!!! We can fix a few briskets.

PS!! we are very excited to spend a few days with y"all to put a face to the name. Continue to have a great & safe time.

20170528_193217-1328x747.jpg I was going to post about getting to GSP around 3:30 and the fantastic crawfish dinner by Nic, but it appears everyone beat me to it.

After dinner we made our visit to the beach to catch sunset. Beautiful as always. DW wrote in the sand " This is my Happy Place". I have to agree.

The crawfish boil last night was terrific. Enjoyed a great evening chatting with our new friends. Afterwards we took the rockstars for a walk. Yeti could not do it. He finally got a ride in the wagon. I don't think he was pleased and I did not get a picture.

We woke around 4 am when the first storm came through. I have no idea how Mallory got here but she had trapped yeti.

Yeti at 4 am.

By 7 Mallory had completely blocked yeti and moved herself all the way in the bathroom. I have no idea how she did that. She did mess up her ankle again. A pressure sore that heals and breaks open again. We are back on open.
