Long story short - I have stage 4, brain cancer (glioblastoma or "GBM"), located on my motor strip. I seem to have turned a corner after a pretty rough time and am finishing up radiation/chemo in the next 1 1/2 weeks.... my neuro-oncologist just gave me the "go ahead" to keep our September vacation plans!!!! Yea!!!!!!!

I have a manual wheelchair that we plan on using from the time we leave our house, fly with it, rental car with it, use at resort, use in parks (we will have a handicap parking placard). I walk in my house with a walker or cane. I'm 50, previously very active, and having some control to occasionally maneuver the wheelchair myself is important to me.

I know I can make a cloth wrap for the seat of my wheelchair... but why aren't they mesh? Would that be too uncomfortable? Does your backside sweat like crazy on the seat and seatback???? Is a terry cloth seat cover (or cotton) the best option to avoid the hot seat?

The radiation has left me half-bald and my skin will continue to be "delicate" due to high doses of "drugs"... I'm thinking my best bet will be to wear "good" sunblock pants and I'm working on adequate/appropriate head coverings. We're pretty well versed at avoiding sun (we've traveled in September quite often). But... is there something I should/could be looking at other than large hats?

I'm going to continue to read threads that include wheelchair suggestions and have found useful "rain gear" posts already. Thank you in advance for any guidance (even if you just link me to other threads).

mesh will not support your butt with any degree of comfort. I use a thick( 3-4 inches deep) gel cushion with a fake sheepskin cover. I SHOULD get the wraps for the arm rests as well cuz man do they get as hot as the seat does.

I use a floppy straw hat( lots of air holes in the crown) and a lightweight fabric maxi dress most of the time. LOTS of sunscreen applied liberally and often. what about a headscarf with UV protection?

do be aware that sometimes the Handicapped parking is actually pretty far from the actual gates.

As someone who has used a wheelchair with a mesh seat and back when I was younger, trust me when I say you don't want to do that all day. It is cooler, but not the most comfortable thing for any length of time. Even when I was in middle school, I had to be in and out of that chair a lot for it to work. As Mrsjvb said, the support for your body just isn't there in my experience.

Thanks for the replies!
After reading more and more, now I'm leaning towards renting an ECV.

@Mrsjvb - I like the idea of a head covering with good SPF!!!! Probably, under a hat.
