Late May vs. early November

Hi all!

What would your preference be for visiting Aulani - late May or early November? In terms of weather (and anything else!)

Thanks so much!

November can be cold and rainy - this past month was terrible. Well, terrible if you were a tourist looking for beach and sun.It was great for me. It felt like fall. And everything is beautiful and green right now because it's been raining so much. But if you want to guarantee hot and sunny weather and plenty of beach time, go for May.

I would think late May might be busier. By late May, many schools are letting out across the country, plus the Memorial Day holiday. We traveled in late September, and found Aulani to be pretty quiet with school having just started up for most. It was a slow time to go, so I imagine early November would still be pretty slow if you avoid Veterans Day as well.

Thanks guys! I really did want to go in May, but I don't think the timing will work out. What about near Halloween? How is the weather at that time? Do we need to worry about hurricanes and that sort of thing? We're likely stopping at Disneyland on the way and I know they had bad wildfires this year in the Fall.

Oahu almost never gets hit with hurricanes. They usually skirt right around the state, and if anything, the big Island takes the brunt of anything bad.

Thanks, that's what I was hoping to hear!

I was just there Nov 10th- 21st and the weather was awesome! Sunny every single day except one day where it rained on and off, it still remained hot and humid, and we still swam etc... Temps were in the 80’s.
We’re going back same time next year!

We must have been on different islands lol
We had amazing weather for the entire 12 days while at Aulani and touring around. We wouldn’t hesitate to go again this time of year:)

November is typically low to mid 80’s during the day temp wise, may is typically mid to upper 80’s. December and January can get “chilly” (70’s during some days).

Crowds would be much lower in november except for veteran’s day weekend, and thanksgiving weekend...(weekdays being much less crowded). Winter time typically will have bigger waves as well as more rain.

Hurricanes that end up hitting Oahu tend to be the ones that “miss” to the south, then take a sudden turn to the north. So until a hurricane is well clear of the islands, theres always a chance.

Going in october...halloween is likely to be...crowded, except for that, shouldn’t be too bad for crowds.

Great, thanks so much everyone! I think we're now looking at mid-late October and by the sounds of it, I think we'll be okay :) I appreciate all of the input!

Good choice! That's only a couple weeks after we went in late September and we'd definitely go that time of year again. Do avoid Columbus Day and the days around it though - it's Fall break for Hawaii schools and Aulani is inclined to be crowded with locals.

It's definitely chilly this week. It's only 74 right now and the whole week looks mid 70s. I suppose if you're coming from the 20s that's great. But it's chilly. Awesome chilly, because it actually feels less like summer, but it's still chilly.

I'm sorry to hijack the thread, but also thinking about what time of year to go. My fiancee and I are getting married on November 3rd and want beach weather on our honeymoon. We don't mind delaying it a bit. Are January and February not good ideas? March? May starts to get hairy with my work schedule. April would be doable though.

november through april can have “beach” weather...just depends on what kind of temp you’re looking for. superbowl weekend nearly always rains if the pro-bowl is in hawaii...its basically a guarantee of good weather for that day (can have a week of bad weather before and after...but pretty much always good weather the day of the game).

november can start getting “chilly” (possible 70’s during morning/afternoon, high 70’s low 80’s day...60’s night time) sometimes it can be warmer...

its less eratic than florida weather, but when it does rain it can rain all day/week or once...for 40+ days/nights.

may through october are the best bets for what most would consider beach weather...but if you live someplace where its snowing...70’s might be great beach weather for you. (I’d imagine if you go through a week+ of snow...70’s or even 60’s would feel quite warm)

november through january (sometimes a little into feb) can see very high surf conditions on the north shore (wraparound occasionally hits aulani...the lagoons are still safe beach wise, but sometimes rip tides...strong ones too can develop) the high surf also tends to hit the kailua/kaneohe beaches as well...but not as high.

december to feb can also have whales you can spot from the beach...sometimes they get fairly close, most times they’re pretty far out.

Today it's 77 and sunny. The temps have been pretty consistant in the mid 70s to low 80s for a month now. It's cooler at night, in the mid to high 60s. We did get a lot of rain the 2nd half of november, but it seems to have settled down now. Good thing is that everything is green. Now, I personally, being originally from new england, would sit on the beach all day today and I don't mind going in the water. It's cooler than the summer, but it will never be as cold as Maine beach water, which I also happily swim in. The sun is plenty hot for me. It's not humid at all, it's glorious. On the other hand, I've had friends and friends of friends come who think it's too cold (compared to winter vacations they've taken in the carribean, mexico, etc). My good friend has her cousins staying with her, and they're all complaining like crazy because they wanted HOT HOT HOT. It's not.

I think it's just important to have some realistic expectations. Look at historic weather data. There isn't much variation from year to year, and without the melting humidity, the weather generally feels just like it says it feels.

Thank you! When is Columbus day? Or, what is the week people usually vacation around it? Thanks!

2nd monday in October. (it's not actually columbus day in Hawaii, but it's still a state holiday, and the kids are generally out of school that week for fall break)

Most of the US has a long weekend. Because Hawaii starts school at the beginning of August, it's the end of the first quarter, so it's the natural vacation time. But I'm not sure I've ever heard of any other place on the mainland having school vacation. So it's not a big travel time for everyone. Just local people.
