On site hotel rates increase

I was just going through the Disneyland Official Guide I found from 2006. Lists the rack rate at the Disneyland Hotel to be $195 to $235, depending on view and season. We're paying $600 per night this summer. So, in the course of 12 years, rates have almost tripled. Even WDW can't lay claim to such ridiculous increases. We're staying on site as this is likely a once in a lifetime trip, but man, that is crazy.

Proof of concept; if people are willing to pay...

Have a blast! We stayed at the Grand Californian as they were opening since my wife was a CM at the Disney Store, that was the only way we could afford it.

We've been able to manage the on-site prices by utilizing our DVC points and meeting rates. We are at the DLH in April for Dapper Day and the rates were 50% off through the Dapper Day website (links to Disneyland meeting). We will utilize our DVC points at the Grand in October. We will also use a meeting rate in early December when one of regular meetings is back at the Anaheim convention center. Once again 30-60% discounts through the meeting booking site. When we can't get a good rate we stay at the Tropicana.

Between then and now the DLH had a huge 2 year refurbishment (announced in 2009; 2010-2012)- that probably explains a lot of the price increase. It was already at $400/$500 a night when it finished.

Eh, shouldn't have THAT much of an impact. I know it was a huge refurbishment, but lots of hotels do that without the crazy increases.

There is also the increased value of staying on site given the early entry. (the rate increase is STILL CRAZY regardless.)

Very simply put, supply and demand. They sell out at the current prices. Imagine if the prices were half that! (I would love it, but would be hard to get a room booked!

They will charge what people will pay but at some point they are going to burn themselves with the consumer. But that day has yet to come. As my grandmother would have said, they might be getting to big for their britches.
