Ways that Disney World can be more efficient

I’m an efficiency expert. One reason I love Disney so much is because it is so efficient! The magical magic band that lets you into the hotel rooms, the parks, and the restaurants and stores. The fast passes that let you skip lines. The MDE app that lets you buy food. However, there are ways that Disney can improve its efficiency for minimal cost: (The following are all true up to September, 2017 when I last went.)

1. The bus arrival information should be shown on the MDE phone app. That will make waiting for the bus much easier to manage and greatly reduce wait time. In fact, the buses’ locations show also show up on a map. Similarly, other transportation changes such as monorail breakdowns and boat cancellations due to lightning should also be immediately updated.

2. The bus stops at Pop and All Stars should be covered. Building a simple cover doesn’t need to cost that much, but it will provide much protection from sun and rain for the thousands of people that stay there. All other hotels have covered bus stops.

3. The bus stops at MK for Pop, CBR, and AofA goes like this: Pop first, then CBR, and AofA being the farthest. That makes no sense. CBR is a moderate while the other two are values. It should be CBR, then AofA, then Pop. This is how it is in the other parks, just not MK.

4. The bus drivers should be given flexibility to make sensible decisions about their destinations. I was waiting for Epcot one day in the afternoon. The line got longer and longer, and the bus was not coming. However, 3 different HS bus came about ever 5 minutes, and they all left empty because nobody was going to HS. Then a 4th HS bus came, but it stopped at the Epcot bus stop. The driver got out and loaded the handicapped person. Then he opened the front door. I was second in line, and the man in front of me asked the driver why his sign said HS. At that point, the driver closed the front door, kicked the handicapped person off the bus, and drove away empty! The bus driver could have easily driven us to Epcot, then proceed to HS, which is very close to Epcot anyway.
The same thing happened to me in 2016, when 3 AK buses came and left empty while I waited forever for Epcot.
The bus driver should report to headquarters about any long line they see, and dynamic adjustments can the be made to improve bus efficiency without increasing cost.

5. The pre-assigned fast passes are very nice, but there should only be 2 pre-assigned fast passes and one dynamic pass that people can get only after they arrive at the park. There were times in the morning when Splash Mountain had only a 5 minute wait, and yet you can’t get a fast pass for it because all the fast passes are gone. In the past, if a ride is only 5 minutes, you can get a fast pass for it in half an hour. It was much more flexible and efficient.

6. Disney should provide guests with the option of room selection. They can even charge for it. I would love to be able to select my room within the room category I purchased. That will also save work for the room assignment workers. For example, say if half the guests want to pick their rooms while the other half don’t want to bother. Then disney can allow all the odd numbered rooms to be selected while reserving the even numbered rooms for hotel assignment. That way, all the “best” rooms in a category are not selected. The program can ask the guest what are their preferences about rooms (which building, near elevator, top floor), and then generate 5 room options for the guest to choose from. They can charge $10 for the room selection fee, with the understanding that if the room goes out of commission, the guest must accept a different room. Disney then gets paid while the guest do the hotel’s work.

7. The bus drop off area at Disney Springs should be covered. Right now it has a decorative skeletal structure that supports climbing plants. I went to Disney Springs once with 2 kids and a baby. It started to rain right after we got off the bus. I quickly pulled out the rain coats for the kids and covered the baby. In that time, I was soaked to the skin.

8. Disney does not allow guests to borrow the luggage carts, which is illogical. Sometimes no bell boy is available, so the guest just stands there and waits forever even if he wants to carry his own luggage by using the carts. Disney can at least charge for renting the carts to make them available for guest use.

9. Disney needs to do a decent job on its website. Last night, when I clicked the Dolphin hotel restaurant page, I got Stitch. And nothing was happening that was overloading the websites. This has happened to me many times in the past on different pages. Also, the page description says the restaurant offers a lunch buffet. It doesn’t. All the restaurants should have more pictures of their food with labels so people know what to order, but they have at most two or three. And, if you want to see pictures of the rooms at Beach Club, you can’t. You click on the room photos link, you see nothing but outside photos.

10. The moderate and value hotels should have “food concierge” options, where for extra money you can use your magic bands to get into a room that has ready food and drinks all day long, so that one does not need to wait to get food. Like an all you can eat food court that lasts all day. It doesn’t need to provide extra concierge service to keep the costs down. With the magic band, it will be very easy to control such room access to only the paying guests.

11. CBR and CSR are both huge resorts with internal bus systems that run every 15 minutes. It would be more efficient if they run long carts (similar to those at parking lots) around the lake on the walking paths instead, 2 carts running in opposite directions all day. Most people walk along the lake. There can be numerous “cart stops” where people can see a cart coming and get on at the cart stop. There can be open areas for hauling strollers or luggage, and the carts will be faster than the bus because the carts go in a much smaller circle. It will be more fun for the guests (especially the kids), takes less time for the guest to reach the food court (because they are walking part of the way instead of waiting for the bus), and carts cost less than the bus to run and are easier to drive.
And in every Disney hotel, whenever a worker is driving a hotel cart from point A to point B and there is space for passengers, they should put a sign on their cart to show where they are going, and pick up walking people on the way who are going in the same direction. They don't have to waste time driving each guest to his destination, but rather like a bus, going towards their own destination and dropping guests off as necessary where it is closest to the guests' destination. Tips are not required but appreciated! When I stayed at the Grand Floridian, there were carts all over the place, mostly empty and forcing guests out of their way instead of offering the guests a ride.

I agree with many of your thoughts.

My main point of agreement is including detailed transit status information on the MDE App. It's probably one of those things which is MUCH more complicated than we realize, but Uber and Lyft can basically do it so why not Disney!

Good Idea. They already show the bus arrival time on a screen at the bus stops in the resorts. So they have the info to share.

My understanding is that buses are rerouted on the fly from dispatch depending on need.

I always ask for my my room and usually get it. Don't give them the idea to up charge for this.

This is called club level at some other resorts. The magic band doesn't prevent tailgaters.

Why would you want a fastpass for a ride that has only a five minute wait?
 


The only one I'm having issues wrapping my head around is #10. I really can't see a "club level food concierge room" being appropriate/efficient for a value. The point of a value is to save money and a majority of people who reserve values use it as a place to sleep (out at parks all day) or people who are staying for prolonged periods of time from Europe. I'm guessing Europeans would rather spend their time and $$ in the parks and on real food. Concierge for a value just doesn't make sense in my brain because I think of them as Disney themed Holiday Inns which aren't meant to have the fancy concierge touches. People at values would most likely spend their dollar on park/restaurant food or groceries.

CSR used to have long golf carts that picked people up along the central sidewalk. I'm not sure if it still does.
 


Number 1 is coming. Disney said it’s coming a couple weeks ago. Read it on the rumor board.
