Thoughts From July 13-19 Trip

Just returned from our July13-19 visit. It was just me and the kids this year, though the kids are pretty big now (DD15 and DS21). We spent 5 days in the parks – a good long time to hold us over as we don’t plan to return until much of the SWL hullabaloo has died away (2020?). Here are my observations:

Disneyland Hotel
I toyed with a stay at the GCH, but in the end we chose DLH because I received a unique offer code for 15% off Sun-Wed nights which got the cost per night down to $484 for parking lot view rooms. And there is, as yet, no noisy demolition for the new hotel to be built next to DLH; rather Downtown Disney is shuttered and quiet on that end of the mall. We found DLH as comfortable and magical as ever. Rooms clean, beds cozy, and decent sound proofing. We discovered there are great views from the upper floors of the parking lot side of the Fantasy Tower. These are the cheapest rooms, yet they give you a wonderful view of fireworks, the Matterhorn, Big Thunder and the expansive SWL construction. If I stay at DLH again, I am definitely saving $ and requesting this room type over pool view.

Monorail
In 5 days of in and out of the parks multiple times per day, we were only able to take the Monorail 3 times. Why? Because any time the temp was upper 80s+ it was too hot to run it. They have no interior air conditioning and cabins become sweltering. That meant that midday when you really, really want to save the steps from walking all the way back to the DLH, you can’t. Every day it was down from noonish to 6pmish. It is a major lost amenity for DLH guests. They’ve been touting the Monorail station as a big plus for the new premium hotel as it will be built into the hotel’s design. I hope they fix the climate control on the cabins while they take the Monorail down during hotel construction.

Overall Food Quality
I think it was Dizme who wrote a few months ago, that she thought food quality had slipped. I can second that. Don’t know why (cost savings, new head of food and beverage??), but we had several poor, almost inedible meals. It happened at quick service, table service, and walk-up venues. I had a corn dog from the Little Red Wagon and only ate 3 bites because it was dripping with grease, so much so that it dripped down the stick and stained my shirt. Café Orleans’s Muffaletta Salad was grossly overdressed with a sour chopped olive dressing that was overwhelming. Hungry Bear used to be a favorite with a great fried green tomato sandwich and sweet potato fries; both are now long gone and replaced with a just OK, very basic turkey caesar wrap (at least it was edible). A strawberry pastry twist from Maurice’s Cart at PFF tasted odd as if the fat in the pastry (not butter- don’t know what it was) was old and the texture was soggy instead of flaky – again we tossed it after a couple of bites. Tangaroa Terrace hot dog bun was stale, hard, and cold, and my tofu Asian salad also criminally overdressed. (And hate to mention, but I saw two large roaches, a critter I have never seen at Dland resort before – one in the DD Starbucks and one near WCT in DCA.)

On the good side, churros were still a winner. Plaza Inn fried chicken remains absolutely delicious. Safari Skewers at Bengal BBQ also reliably good. And the big revelation was two delicious sandwiches (pulled pork and French dip) at the French Market Restaurant. I hadn’t eaten there in years and both of those sandwiches were quite good from bread to filling to condiments.

Lamplight Lounge
The Good – It is a beautiful space with a delightful interior where every element is thoughtfully designed and part of a cohesive and engaging experience. We ate downstairs in the interior which still feels outdoorsy due to the large central bar and its oversize windows that open to the waters of Pixar Pier. It is a space with tremendous ambience, and I would go back any time to sit at the bar and enjoy a drink and some appetizers.

The Not So Good – The menu is very uneven. They have numerous specialty drinks, but sadly the four we tried were super sweet. I asked our waitress for a recommendation for any drink that was not sweet, and she couldn’t think of one. They all seem to have a heaping helping of agave nectar. I should have stuck to a basic like beer or wine. The food is also uneven. Two appetizers were really good – the potato skins delicious Yukon Gold types and were crispy outside with two great dipping sauces, and the piggy wings were tender riblets with a pleasing tangy bbq sauce. The poke bowl, however, was blah as it needed some ginger or wasabi or something as a high note to give the raw fish and the mashed avocado some flavor dimension. The ratatouille was inedible – awful. It made me mad it was so bad. It just showed no respect for the beautiful vegetables that went into its creation. The zucchini, peppers, eggplant, etc had been overcooked into mush and then piled on top of a huge quantity of cloyingly creamy, very heavy tomato sauce. The veggies drown in the unpleasant sauce; you couldn’t taste them.

Pixar Pier
Well this was supposed to be an upgrade, but it doesn’t much feel like it yet as they reopened the area minus one ride (the carousel) and minus one shop (Bing Bong’s). So we actually have less to do there now then before. The Incredicoaster is best at night when the effects are more impressive, and you can enjoy the pier lighting from the coaster track. It’s a fun ride, but FPs are not flying off the shelves for it as I was able to book them into the evening. RSR and GOG FPs are gone hours sooner. The paint job on the outside of TSMM is nice, but they left the interior ride loading and adjacent shop with the old paint colors which don’t fully jibe. The pier does look very pretty at night when all of the neon and popcorn lights are on. Visit after dark for sure. Pixar Band is worth catching if you can.

MaxPass & Mobile Food Ordering
Aweeesooommme!!!! As the family FP runner, MP changed my life. I can’t believe I used to run hither and yon to grab the paper FPs. (Really I would leave my family in Dland on a ride and run over to DCA to grab a GRR FP and run back.) So now all of that is over as I can just instantly do it on my cellphone and quickly stack up FPs in both parks. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. The app interface is v intuitive. Sometimes there is a little glitch in the refresh of return times but other than that, heaven.

In fact it is so helpful, that if SWL was not opening in spring 2019, I might use MP to help save on hotel costs. Here’s why. With a 3day+ park hopper, you get one MM regardless of where you are staying. I think that one would be enough as you could use it for your Dland MM to ride PP, Dumbo and other non-FP slow loaders. Then the rest of the mornings it is fine to just arrive at regular park opening as you can still get a ton done in the first couple of hours riding standby while using MP to bank FPs for later. No need to stay on-property to have EMH every single day. BUT with SWL, we shall see what happens to the whole experience. They will likely increase cost of MP as well as cost of on-property rooms with carrot of special SWL access.

Mobile food ordering worked very well. Used it at Bengal BBQ, Gibson Girl, Boudin Bakery, Hungry Bear. Each time, we’d start by finding a nice shady table. Then ordered our food on easy to use app. Then in literally 2-3 min the app says it is ready. I walked right past all of the people standing in long line to order food and up to the mobile order pick up window, and the food was freshly made and given to me immediately. Use this free tool people!

F! & PTNP
Main lesson here is that CMs are still not reliable on seating info. We did the BB F! lunch (food was fine for this) and got 9pm show. Arrived at convening spot (in front of HG) at 8pm and already a huge crowd of people with BB and RBT F! FPs had gathered. We at back of the crowd try to ask CMs and others if there is a line specifically for BB people. Hear conflicting opinions from all we ask. Finally the crowd starts to move and one line is veering off to the right and going in first; we ask 3 CMs along the way if this is the BB line, they all say yes so we follow and are at the very end of line. As we approach the seating area I see that it is what I know to be the RBT seating area on the far right of the ROA; I ask a final CM at entry to that area if this is for BB (I show her my BB tix and seat cushions). She says no it is for RBT, and the BB is the area right next to it and to just hop the rope and go in there. We did and that is how we quite innocently (truly!) jumped the entire line of BB people who had waited long before us because they had not even been let in yet and so we go first pick of where we wanted to sit. It was my first time seeing refurbed F! I liked most of it v much, especially Aladdin and Jasmine. The new pirate ship scene didn’t really work though as the overlay projections were sketchy and the dialog garbled. I thought the PP version was easier to follow (Pan vs Hook is all you need to know), more visually fun, and just made more sense since this is supposed to be Mickeys imaginings, and every other part of the show is animation based.

PTNP
Did PTNP on our second to last night in the parks, and we were ready for a long sit down. At DD's suggestion, we grabbed a table at the Mendocino Tasting Terrace, right at the railing overlooking the parade route. Tables were free and open at 6:45 pm so that meant a two hour wait until parade start. BUT we had chairs and nice table. I used mobile ordering to get us soup bread bowls and salad from Boudin Bakery. Picked them up an brought them back. Then I got myself a nice glass of pinot and my DD a seltzer, and we leisurely talked, ate and people watched. Parade was great. Loved the new Incredibles float.

Crowds
Sat and Sun were the best days in terms of crowds. Quiet good actually. Mon, on the other had was very crowded. Tues/Wed better than Mon but worse that Sat and Sun.

OK I think that is it. Hope this is helpful info. Happy to give back to the community who gives so much to me.

We were there for 9 days right before you and I agree with most all that you said!!! I know the restaurants I love, you didn't mention those so I guess I had different food experiences. We tend to do Carnation Cafe, Pizza Port, Storyteller's and Whitewater Snacks!! Also, we stayed 3 of the nights at Disneyland Hotel and we had the hottest day in Disney theme park history, 117, with other 108's surrounding it, so we got to use the monorail exactly once! I was bummed we moved from the Grand over there, very unfortunate!!

Other than that, agree, weekends were MUCH better than weekdays and Maxpass (have used before but will restate it) is the best thing ever invented. We pay $50 a day for a family of 5 and I would rather cut out other things than sacrifice that!!!

Glad you had a great trip!

I did not know that agave nectar was used in alchool....didn't even though it existed until I bought some bottles recently because of close-out pricing....so for sure super sweet!!

monorail observation is interesting....I did not know that it was an amenity for the hotel.....I always thought it was just the end of the line.

thank you for your crowd observations....looks as though locals avoid the heated weekends and out of town folks avoid the weekends because of all the locals.

I have learned to ask for Disney mixed drinks WITHOUT the added sugar. They use so many juices and liqueurs that have plenty of sugar already. There is no need to add more. Just say "no simple syrup/agave nectar please." They will definitely accommodate you.

Mobile ordering is the Best thing since sliced bread at Disneyland. I LOVE it too!

Thanks for the nice report.

I do not ride the monorail all that often but did 3 times on our trip last month. I have never known it to close because of hot temperatures so am interested if anyone knows if that has always been the case? Also, I have to think that the monorails at WDW have A/C. Does anyone know?

Great tip on French market. Never dined there in my life but added it as an option for the future.

ITA about PxP and Incredicoaster. The difference between night and day is well, a night and day difference LOL. CS did not seem that much different day and night. But IC does.

Former FP runner here and, yes, all the way to DCA from DL in the good old days, just like you. Yes, MP is a godsend.

I have also never known the monorail to close due to temperature and have been there several times when temps were in the 80s, which is pretty normal in summer.

Thanks for your insight.
On most vacation trips we look forward to enjoying lots of great food. That's not really true of Disney vacations. I also agree on the corn dog; horribly greasy and basically tasteless. We both took a couple of bites and tossed them in the trash. We eat healthy and they were just over the top of what we'll consume anymore - especially when they just aren't that good. There are a few good spots for food but it takes more than one trip to find them all!

The monorails here at WDW are air conditioned. And yes, it has always been the case that the monorails close there in hot temps, but it's usually not until it hits upper 90's.

I never ride monorail. Too stuffy.

We never eat at the bad restaurants you mention but always at French market and the others you enjoyed. Sorry you had bad experiences there-I don’t think much changed. Some are just usually bad I guess. :(

Thanks. Loved your tr!

We were there at the same time and I agree about the crowds, Saturday and Sunday were great! I find the monorail to be down a lot. We stayed at GC this time but wanted to take it after walking thru DD but it was closed. When we stayed at DLH last August it was closed pretty much the whole time. Can’t rely on it for sure. We did take it once this time for a trip around the park and once it gets moving it isn’t too hot, they keep the windows open. Thanks for the info on Lamp, igniting Lounge, we wanted to go but couldn’t get reservations. Maybe next time.

When Monorail is running, it is important to note how many trains are in operation. When they are running all three, it is pretty efficient usually. We used these in June back and forth to DCA and GCH and it worked really well overall. Sometimes it is running but they are only operating one or two trains. Then efficiency goes way down.

If the temps go above 100, they shut the monorail down to avoid people overheating. If the temps are in the 80s and 90s, they don't fully load the trains to allow better airflow.
monorail observation is interesting....I did not know that it was an amenity for the hotel.....I always thought it was just the end of the line.
Prior to DTD existing, the DTD monorail stop was actually at the DLH. Thus an amenity. Now, not so much. But there are times the monorail will be limited to hotel guests, such is after fireworks.

They are airconditioned but flow through their condensers is so poor when stopped that the system stops working.
We got stuck on one in WDW and had to sit waiting for an extended amount of time for another train to leave the next station. It was 103 outside and since the AC doesn't work when stopped, the inside became sweltering. It was so bad that people were talking about forcing the doors open! We came close to dialing 911 but the train finally moved. Feeling sick after that, all we could do was go back to our hotel to hydrate and rest.
I will never ride the WDW Monorail again if it's the least bit warm out.

That's a bummer of an experience. I've been stuck on them holding for traffic a few times, but usually less than 10 minutes or so, didn't have much time to get super hot. We live here, so I ride them about 30-40 times a month, been pretty lucky so far to not have any extended waits. True, the flow is not great, but it's better than no air at all!

That explains the monorail! We were also there the week before & thought it was just broken all the time!

We were there the 14th to the 18th, so the same time that you were. We stayed at the Disneyland Hotel too. The monorail was down a lot. We have been in July the last 4 years and I can't remember it ever being down as much. It was open every time we wanted to ride it except for once, so it did not really impact us, but I know that when I looked at the attractions on the app for the wait times (which is frequently now days) it was noted as being closed a lot of the time-- probably pretty close to most of the afternoon every day. This was probably our hottest July trip- so that explains it. We noticed that some of the characters were pulled off the app for their afternoon sets. We had really hoped to see Dug one day, but he disappeared from the app. Russell was still there for his first set-- but he did not return for any of his later sets and disappeared off the app as well. I can't imagine how bad it was the week before because it was in the 100s that week and had cooled off some before we got there.

Glad you had a great stay at the Disneyland Hotel. Until this trip, our stays have always been great. This was our 9th stay at the Disneyland Hotel, and unfortunately our worst experience there. We arrived about noon- we should have been there an hour or two earlier, but our flight was delayed. As we expected, our room was not ready. We were told we would get a text when it was ready. We left our bags with bell services and headed to the parks, planning to come back and get our bags situated and maybe change clothes and unload some purse items when the room was ready. At 7:00 p.m when we still had not gotten a text, my husband went back to the resort on his own to check on the room as by that point, we were no longer going to change, unload what we were carrying etc. When he got to the resort the room was still showing that it was NOT ready. At 7:00 p.m.??!!?? They had to make some calls and found that it was "ready" and gave him a room. It was next to the elevator- there was some insulation and a little space so it was not horrible, but I could still hear the elevators go up and down all night. Also, in the past when we have booked Deluxe view it was listed as floors 4-7. We were on the 3rd floor (room number in the 2000s- so I'm guessing the 2nd floor of rooms?). It is possible that they changed the categories with the construction coming up- either that or they did not give us our full category. We did have a pool view, but were low down we really couldn't see well-- not as good as in the past anyway. It was the worst room we have ever been assigned, but at least it was in the Fantasy tower which was where we were hoping to be. Our room was not the cleanest and there was wallpaper peeling off in the bathroom and paint chipped in other areas. I really feel like they completely forgot to assign us a room and threw us in a leftover. I think the year before last we had the same thing happen where they never texted us- but that time the room was showing ready and they just had forgotten to text. We also had issues while there. We found someone's (not ours) contact lens in the middle of the bathroom floor. We left it to see how long it would take for them to clean it-- 2 days later, they finally did. We left one morning with the last yellow (i.e. time to replace) end of Kleenex box tissue showing and on our last roll of toilet paper, only to get back from the parks at mid-night, to find that while they had cleaned the room- they had not left us any toilet paper or any kleenex. So- luckily my husband had packed a box of kleenex-- and I kept reminding people to use the toilet paper sparingly as we did not want to have to wait for them to bring it up that late at night. Just a lot of little things, but they did kind of add up. I would definitely stay there again as we have had some really great experiences there. I probably should have complained, but we were too busy enjoying the parks.

We did not think the food quality had slipped. We kept talking about how much better the Counter Service was at DLR than at WDW. We had some great food. Some of that may just be what you order. I have always thought the Little Red Wagon corn dogs were way to greasy-- we think the ones at California adventure are much better. We thought the Paradise Garden Grill pixar food-- the tamales and the verde mole chicken were both really good. The pasta dishes from the place next door to that was really good as well. Our Cafe Orleans food was great. Last summer we thought the food at River Belle Terrace was awful for our Fantasmic package. We tried it again this year as the menu had changed and we all liked our food. We also ate the new menu items from Flo's and thought it was much improved from last year. I loved that new pot pie they have. I agree with you that the churros are 100% still a winner.

We didn't do Lamplight. I was going to make a reservation when they first opened booking, but DD looked at the menu and declared there was nothing on the adult or kids menus she would eat. She is still unhappy that Disneyland no longer has a Princess character meal. I wasn't real impressed with the Lamplight menu either.

I thought the theming of the Pier was cute, but I agree with you that it wasn't much of an upgrade. Not enough to warrant supposedly a "huge" celebration. I got a survey asking me how it compared to the 60th Anniversary or last year's Summer of Heroes as I had attended both of those and I almost laughed. Those felt like something new. Outside of Edna meeting and greeting, the Incredicoaster overlay, and a few really cute design touches, this did not feel like anything "new". It was characters we had seen before- although Mr. and Mrs. Incredible and Frozone have not been out in a long time-- just all along the same area. It was the same Pier with just some, in my opinion, much needed Disney touches added. Before it did not seem very Disney- now it does. It looks great-- but I wouldn't call it a brand new area. I wish I had your info about the Incredicoaster being better at night. I bet you are right-- it is hard to see some of the things well during the bright daylight hours. I should have rode it at night!!! I really liked it though. I liked that they themed that coaster. It seemed bland before and it is really cute now. I noticed that Incredicoaster fast passes were far more available than RSR and GOTG also. I didn't even notice that they had painted TSM. We saw the band area, but never saw the band playing. I liked the new Pixar Pier lighted sign and the lights were pretty.

I absolutely agree with you on Max Pass. As the family runner, it was well worth it for me. It was really great to be able to book from the app. I absolutely hate WDW's FP+, but I absolutely LOVE Max Pass. Keeping the book the day of, and 1 FP at a time rules (or at least within a certain amount of time as we did have multiple at a time), but also letting you book that from your phone was great. Because they kept the bones of the old system rules, there were still a ton of good things available- unlike at WDW were everyone books 3 a month or two before their trip and often nothing good is available to get as a 4th after you have used those 3. Max Pass is great in the early mornings when the FPs kick in right away and you can go from ride to ride using FP for the first hour or two. You can get a ton done.

This is our 9th year going in either June or July and Saturday and Sundays always have lower crowds than the weekdays. I agree Monday was packed and Tuesday was better. We must have been in different areas on Wednesday. We thought the first few hours Wednesday morning were absolutely great-- but after that it was absolutely insane. We thought that was our most crowded day by far. That was our check out day and our last day in the parks, so we left in the late afternoon to head south to the San Diego area for the rest of the week, so maybe it got better again that evening-- but that afternoon was absolutely awful as far as crowds go. Normally, I want to cry when we leave Disney- but as crowded and hot as it was that afternoon, I was not so sad to go. Although today, I would love to be back there!

Interesting to see different takes from people who were there at the exact same time as we were!!! Thanks for posting! I enjoyed reading your post!

I have also had the same experience with the monorail as you did. We stayed at the Disneyland Hotel last October for a week and it was in the 90s - 100s our whole trip and the monorail was down every day during the afternoon. We didn't get to take it once back to the hotel for our afternoon nap. Very disappointing, but they told us it is for safety reasons since there is no AC on it.
