I love animals, but I don't put them on the same level as humans, so checked 'ok'. We (really, my daughter) have an indoor cat going on 15 yrs., a hedgehog, two lovebirds that we often let fly freely around the house, and a cockatiel- same thing. I grew up having dogs, cats, snakes, lizards, birds, tarantulas, rats, hampsters... so quite fond of them.

Yes, and like many here have said I like animals more than most people. I have a shirt that says, "Why hang out with people when you can hang out with cats?" ;)

I also get way more upset when an animal dies in a movie than when a person does. That's just how I'm wired and there's no changing that. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I see animals as having the purest level of innocence that humans cannot match, no matter what age.

Definitely. If I'm deciding between which bar to go to, and I notice that one has 10 dogs while the other has 10 people, I'm going in the dog bar.

TRying to decide between two bars tonight - no dogs at either :(

As long as they belong to someone else.
But seriously we have owned animals over the years mostly cause the kids wanted a dog/cat/turtle etc. And I loved all our pets but the kids are grown now and can make their own decisions about animals.
Love watching the cute animal videos tho.

Love them. Not as much as some apparently!

We have three dogs. Two little ones inside and an outside dog. The little ones are a pommie and a mixed breed, the one outside is a Cur. And he prefers outside. It’s been very hot here and we have been under a heat advisory. I have to coax him in and make him stay. He would much rather me come out with him and play. Winter time he is much easier to get in, doesn’t like the cold I guess; or rain.

I love these dogs. But they are dogs not people. And while I do adore them, I think I prefer people.

OTOH, I know a young woman who is ridiculous about animals. She wants to rescue every dog or cat she sees. Problem is she has neither the room nor can she afford it. I think it’s crazy that she is putting these animals before her family.

Yes and I’m suspicious of people that don’t.
yup me too. I wonder about people who have never loved a pet.

Love my fellow animal creatures... furred, scaled, feathered.... better than many humans.

Current tally:
2 dogs ( mini schnauzer and Boston Terrier)
1 cat
1 Guinea Pig
1 Hedgehog
2 Parakeets
3 Chickens

Definitely need more chickens, the predators are taking a toll this summer. Also thinking of adding goats.

I love animals!

I have two cats who are absolutely spoiled, and over the years we've also had fish, frogs, and a guinea pig. (I feed the birds outside, too.) I don't want to take on the higher time commitment of having a dog, but I do love other people's, so I have no problem if your dog comes up to me for attention!

I love visiting zoos, animal parks, aquariums... and watching TV shows about animals. (Go Shark Week!)

I'm not a vegetarian, but my "pet vs. food" threshold does kind of lean toward pets, and I agree - I don't like the movie if the dog dies!

...I especially remember holding a lion cub, he was adorable, even when he was gnawing on my hand. :) And a couple years ago I got to hold a bear cub and feed her Fruit Loops. :)

I am sooooo jealous!!

I do love animals, but I can't vote in the poll because I do not consider them human. They are what they are. I'd probably like them less if they were more human.

Some are cute from a distance, and we have a cat whose redeeming quality is that he is attuned to the kids' moods and well-being to the point where he knows exactly when which kid needs him - When all three are well, he randomly picks a bed to lay on, but anytime one of the kids are sick, or really sad, the cat is right there waiting to jump on their bed and cuddle with them. It's really incredible to watch the bond. He truly knows when and which kid needs him. I'm telling you, if it wasn't for that, he would have been gone a long time ago! (after the first time he pooped in my closet!)

Other than our cat, most animals are cute in pictures or from afar. I hate going to people's houses who have dogs. I don't like to pet them, I don't like their wet noses, or when they jump on me. I am allergic to most cats, and DD is allergic to most other small mammals, birds kind of gross me out a little up close, and anything resembling a rodent better never come near me.

I guess bottom line is, animals are fascinating as a whole, I just don't want to be close to them or have to take care of them.

And they are NOT human!

I don't think animals are humans, but I do love animals. (And there are some days when I feel a greater affinity for animals than I do humans... because, I think, sometimes, animals demonstrate more civilized & loving behavior than some humans.)

We have 3 pets currently (1 dog & 2 cats), &, while they are not on the same level as our children, they are a part of our family - especially our dog.

I think having children has put me more in tune w/ animals... just because, in different ways, all 3 of our kids have been interested in different animals over the years, so we've learned a lot, been on different animal encounter tours, etc.

For example, our DD loves sea turtles, &, while I would have appreciated the sea turtle, I probably never would have learned as much about them if it weren't for her. We've done sea turtle hospital turtles, &, now, among other things, when we go to the beach, we fill in any holes we find to make it easier for momma sea turtles & baby sea turtles.

Older DS loved sharks, & younger DS loves all animals - but especially foxes. I cannot tell you how many different shark & fox books we have!

And, as a homeschool teacher, we've done in-depth year-long studies of flying creatures (insects & birds) & land animals - so it was through those classes I've learned all kinds of unique animal characteristics & about keystone species such as the honeybee.

I was going to come on and pretty much write exactly what you did :) We homeschooled too and I learned far more than I wanted to about aligators and crocdiles than I normally would have :) I still have SO many books on wolves, dogs, horses, sharks, gorillas....
I feel the exact way about our pets. I love them like family but draw the line on putting their value above humans. Even though, as you basically said, they sometimes act more "humanely" :)
I have 1 dog, 3 cats and 1 turtle( anyone want a turtle? I'm at my limit of turtle care :) ) And, my youngest wants another cat and my middle wants some kind of lizard. No,just no.
Our free time was always spent at zoos, aquariums and anything else we could find with animals in them :)

I like most, generally from a distance. For myself personally I only spell pet D-O-G, with a particular soft spot for Golden Retrievers.
