whew! That was a tough one after taking a couple weeks off! Gonna try not to take so much time off in between!

Had my alarm set for 3:15am, woke up at 3, tossed and turned until 3:11 trying to convince myself to get going. Finally, turned off the alarm and got dressed. Leashed up my running buddy and off we went! Week 7 workout 2 of C25K. Same as workout 1.

Felt good to get up and get going! Weather was chilly but no rain and no WIND!! I like the peace of running in the AM.

Yay for making it back out to the garage! That sounds like quite a workout!

I'm impressed by you (and others on this board) who get up soooo early to get your runs in. The only times I see 3:15 a.m. are when I've stayed up too late, lol. Thankfully I can run pretty much any time during the day or I'd have to do some serious soul-searching about this running thing.

Ohhhhh trust me! When the alarm goes off at 3:15 I have serious soul searching to do myself! But when the giant German Shepard puts his cold wet nose on your face because he's excited, it's time to rise and shine!! I'm up at 4:10 every morning anyway, so 3:15 isn't really that bad. Plus, there's just something about being out there when everyone else is sleeping that is relaxing. You might just give it a try sometime. The world is different when it's asleep!!

#2 Garage workout complete for the week!!

Went something like this.

Warm up and stretching

3 Sets of
TRX Chest press 15 reps
Swiss ball marching 20 reps
TRX atomic push ups 15 reps

3 Sets of
45 sec elbow planks
TRX squats 15 reps
Swiss ball hamstring curls 15 reps

3 Sets of
TRX saw 15 reps
Cascading calves
TRX low row 15 reps

Felt like this was a good overall body workout. Probably gonna stick to this workout next week too!!

When I started this journal these were my goals:

1. Run again <--- complete
2. Complete C25K again <--- almost complete
3. Run a 5K before the end of the year <--- complete
4. Run a 10K early next spring
5. Run half marathon in September
6. Dopey in 2020

I've been feeling good lately. Stiffness is a minimum and my strength almost feels normal-ish. Once I get moving, I feel great and after the last race I felt like I still had some distance in the tank.

I'm considering revising my goals and I'm looking for some opinions. I may be being tooooooo optimistic with my abilities at this point but I'm thinking about trying a half marathon in June and then a full marathon in September. Then train for Dopey and be ready by January 2020. Timeline would look something like this.

Train for 10k starting next week. 8 weeks to get there. Run 10k late Feb early Mar
Train for half. 12 weeks to get there. Run Seattle Rock n Roll June 9th. Take the following week off.
Train for full. 12 weeks to get there. Run the Skagit marathon September 8th. Take the following week off.
Train for Dopey with the remainder of the year.

Y'all think this is doable???? Or am I being too optimistic?

I've been looking at the Hal Higdon training plans and with a few modifications I think I can do it.
Should I just stick to my original plan of running a half in September and save my first marathon for the Dopey?
Thanks in advance for any input!!

Not a doctor or trainer of any sort, but...this doesn't sound unreasonable to me. You're basically running 5ks as training runs now. A half marathon in 5 months is very very reasonable, and a full marathon 3 months later seems reasonable as well.

Now, whether you want to save your first full for the Dopey, that's a personal call. Given that I don't see myself at marathon distance next year at all, I really can't say.

Thanks for responding Kazrak! After much soul searching and discussion with DW and friends. I've decided to stick to the original plan to leave Dopey as my first marathon. Seems to be the right thing to do...

Merry Christmas Everyone!! Unfortunately I drew the short straw this year and I'm sitting at work today!
On the plus side I got up an ran this morning! Brisk morning, 34 and clear.
I started my 10k training this morning with a 2.5 mile run. I'm going to be following the Hal Higdon training plan if you are interested.
I've stopped recording my warm up walk as part of my distance, so splits "should" be going down and I'll get a better idea of where I'm at with pace.

Fitbit stats
Total distance 2.52 miles
Total time 25:33
Mile 1- 10:13
Mile 2- 10:07
Mile .52- 9:59

Overall a solid run. I'm very happy with these times as I did this run on very little sleep. About 5 hours due to family Christmas celebration last night.

I'd like to take a moment to reflect on the past 6 months. Six months ago today, I stood up for the first time in 3 days to test my new hardware. The first attempt at standing was a failure and I have to admit I was a little worried about the pain. After taking a short break, I was able to stand with a little help from my wife and the therapist. Next, was one loop around the hospital floor. I'm not sure how far it was, 200ft maybe? But I was totally spent. Waited a few hours and then did two laps.

Next day, I was able to go home. I don't remember much about the ride home except that I could feel every pebble in the road. My body was on high alert for any sudden movement and by the time we made the 1.5 hour drive home it was time to go back to bed. After a short nap, I made a walk to the mailbox and back escorted by my wife. Then I laid back down. The next couple days were more of the same. Lay around, take short walks and try to sit up and visit with the family. Sitting was the worst, I would rather have been up and moving than sitting.

My first month was spent stretching my walks to the end of the block and back, and then around the neighborhood. I think I was up to a two mile walk after the first month. Slow, but steady. Maybe 18 min miles. I went back to work after a month, the boredom of sitting around was killing me. I had many, many restrictions and thankfully I have a manager who was willing to accommodate all of them. Walking was my only exercise for the first 3 months. After my first follow up, I was cleared to start PT and the doc removed my restrictions.

I was really hoping to start running after my follow up with the doc. But, she said "let's do a stationary bicycle for a month". Boy was I bummed. Turns out the doc knows best, there was no way I was really ready to start running again. My core and back were still too weak. Started PT and from the beginning I shared my goals and they put me on the track to reaching them!! I have to say I love those folks!! Though there were nights I went home completely exhausted, they did a great job with me. I can't thank them enough...

My walks were getting longer and my therapy was making me stronger. Now it was finally time to go for a run. Therapist said, go run 2 miles and see how it feels. I found a nice flat loop around town and ran 2.08 miles in 22:26, avg pace 10:46. That was on Saturday October 27th. Not too shabby for my first run. No hills yet though, especially downhill. Turns out that hurt more than running up the hills.

I decided then that I would run a 5k in December, and with my Daughter I was able to train and run the Jingle Bell Dash 5k on December 15th. 3.13 miles, 32:36, avg pace 10:25. This run was fantastic! I felt great the whole race and I think the time was pretty dang good! Today, I started my 10k training 2.52 miles, 25:33, avg pace 10:08. I like that my avg pace time seems to be consistently dropping. Can I get back to a sub 9 min mile? I think so! I haven't really pushed myself, because I can still feel the tightness in my back and I'm afraid I am going to hurt something. Just gonna keep things slow and steady for now.

So much to be thankful for over the past 6 months.

Beginning with the EMT's that made me lay down and strapped me to the backboard, wrapped me in a neck brace and transported me to my first hospital.

The doctor's, nurses and xray techs at Skagit hospital. Thanks for taking good care of me and being patient with me when I wouldn't let you cut off my t-shirt. I really appreciate everything that you guys did with the exception of wheeling me past the coffee stand on the way to and from the xray room! The smell of coffee was delicious and you guy wouldn't let me have any. Just kidding, I understand!

The second ambulance crew that despite being at the end of their shift transported me to Harbor View, our level one trauma center in the Northwest.

The staff at Harbor View. What can I say but thank you!! They were all amazing! Even when I got grumpy because of some miscommunication from the surgeon to the nurses. Everyone there seems to REALLY care about their patients!

Finally, I have to thank my wife and family.... I put them thru a ton of stress. My wife has always been my saving angel....

Looking forward, 5k in January, 10k in February or March, half marathon around the end of June, another half in September and the Dopey in January 2020.

Up at 3:24am for 2 miles with Sullivan this morning. He seemed a bit sluggish this morning. Had to remind him to keep up a few times. Weather was 39 and drizzle. Great morning for a run!!

Wow, been awhile since I updated this. My bad. Garage workouts have been sparse during the holiday's. Hopefully that will get back on track tonight. My runs however have been consistent. I'm getting them in when I need to...

Sunday's run after working 10 hours... ugh...

Total distance 3.11 miles
Total time 32:56
Avg pace 10:35
Mile 1 10:37
Mile 2 10:26
Mile 3 10:47

I was beat after working all day. I really should have gotten my lazy rear out of bed before work. But, I got er dun!

Tuesday's run, fortunately I had Tuesday off and was able to get a good nights sleep the night before. Took Sully and ran a different route. Maybe this was a bad idea as he had a lot more things that needed to be sniffed along the way and I had to remind him that this was run time not sniff time at several points along the route. All in all it was a good run with a killer hill just past the two mile point.

Total distance 2.59 miles
Total time 26:42
Avg pace 10:18
Mile 1- 10:16
Mile 2- 10:15
.59 - 10:29

Also received some very sad news.... My youngest daughter lost her baby. Not a great way to ring in the New Year....

Almost forgot to mention... On the recommendation of my niece you can now find me on Strava, look for Derek Linson if you are interested in following...

So, last night was frustrating. Went on my run, only 2 miles last night. As I'm nearing the end I look down at my Fitbit and I'm at 1.91 miles. I figure "perfect"!! I'm just about to the entrance to the neighborhood. When I turn onto my street I look down and see my Fitbit is back on it's home screen!! What the heck??!!

I don't have any data from that run. I sure hope that doesn't happen very often. I didn't even pay attention to my time so I can't even guestimate my splits. UGH!!

This ever happen to anyone else?

I hate when tracking devices malfunction. I have a garmin and I have had it malfunction before. Usually, it will be tracking my pace all wrong. Usually, I find it has to do with an issue with the bluetooth. Drives me nuts. I have also run thinking my watch was started and find out I never hit go.

That's the first time that has happened to me. I stopped carrying my phone, because I have music and tracking on my Ionic. I used to carry the phone and track on map my run... guess now I still gotta carry the phone as a back up tracker.

Sunday morning run. Crazy rain, wind, thunder and lightning in the wee hours of the morning. But come run time it was fairly mild 42 and cloudy. Was supposed to be a 3.5 mile run. Went just a little bit farther.

Fitbit stats
Total distance 3.58 miles
Total time 38:16
Mile 1- 10:41
Mile 2- 10:49
Mile 3- 10:44
.58 mile- 10:18<---- all downhill

I'm so sorry about your grandbaby! That is so hard.

I've lost data on runs several times when I was tracking on my phone, but I'm pretty sure in my case it was user error--accidentally pausing it or some such while sticking my phone in my pocket, for instance. Thankfully I haven't had that happen since I got my Garmin. It is very frustrating to lose data, especially when we like to over-analyze it afterwards (or at least that's what I do!)

Tuesday run. Weather was sucky. 42, wind and rain. Ugh...
Tried a new route thru the neighborhood. Lots of up and down hills.
Was supposed to be 2.5 miles... I went just a touch over that

Fitbit stats (it didn't turn off this time)
Total distance 2.58 miles
Total time 27:01
Mile 1- 10:11 <--- mostly downhill
Mile 2- 10:36 <--- up and down the streets
.58 mile- 10:37<--- mostly gradual uphill

I was hoping to run a little faster, but I think the up and down hill thing had different plans. All in all a pretty good run.

Thursday early morning run... So early, Strava calls it a night run! Windy again! Wow! Seems like every run has been windy this winter! Fairly warm though, 50 ish.

Fitbit stats
Total distance 2.2 miles
Total time 22:52
Mile 1- 10:44
Mile 2 10:08
.2 mile- 9:53
avg pace 10:23

I was really hoping to see some improvement in my avg pace by now. Maybe I'm just being impatient or maybe I need to start pushing a little harder....

Sunday afternoon run! Perfect day in the great northwest! Sunny and 50 at run time, glad I slept in and decided to run in the afternoon.

Fitbit stats
Total distance 4.06 miles
Total time 42:28
Mile 1- 10:36
Mile 2- 10:21
Mile 3- 10:21
Mile 4- 10:32
avg pace 10:28

Started adding a little distance today. Working my way up to a 10k.
Good news. The average pace didn't fall off with the added distance. I think I could run a 10k right now. But, I'm going to keep working my way up to the distance to be safe.
I have a 5k race this coming Sunday. I'm going to shoot for under 30 min. Given my avg pace, I'm going to have to pick it up a little for the race day!
Congrats to all the runners that completed their marathon weekend races!!!! I'm really looking forward to being there next year!!!

Back to the garage last night.

10 min slow jog
10 sets of 10 reps each
TRX squats
Leg extensions
Swiss ball leg curls
TRX saw
Calf raises

Forgot to mention I added some equipment to the garage over the holidays. I now have a full squat rack, weight bench with leg attachment, olympic barbell and weights.
Also added a kerosene heater and will be adding some insulation to the garage door soon!
