Day 3ABC Commissary and 50s Prime Time Café
We spent all of Wednesday in MGM, and had lunch at the ABC Commissary on Commissary Lane. Michael and I both had the Fish and Chips, which was not as good as the fish at Columbia Harbour House at Magic Kingdom. They offered malt vinegar and tarter sauce condiments in little ketchup-like packets. DH was dying for a burger by this point and had the ABC Special Cheeseburger with fries. Not sure what was supposed to be special, but he really liked it, and said it was very high quality for a CS (I guess thats what makes it special). Mom had the Vegetable Noodle Stir FryAsian vegetables with lo mein noodles in a soy stir-fry. I wish I had taken a picture! It came in a take-out box and was very good. Mom was surprised to find something so diverse and fresh at a fast food place. The only desserts they had listed were a Chocolate Mousse and a No-Sugar Added Strawberry Parfait, but we saw a girl walk away from the counter with a Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Almond Bar, so Mom asked for that for her dessert, and got it. I would have loved a nut-free Haagen-Dazs bar, but people insist on ruining perfectly good chocolate with nuts! So DH and I had the Chocolate Mousse, which was more like a whipped Jell-O pudding topped with a little whipped cream and a few mini marshmallows (a nice touch), and Michael had the Strawberry Parfait. After lunch, we split up again. I told Mom that the Writers Stop was supposed to have good coffee, so she tried a cappuccino there. She said it was only slightly better than the in-room coffee (which she tried after I warned her not to!), but drinkable.
We had a 6:35 reservation at 50s Prime Time Café. We were all supposed to meet at 6:15, but DH and I were late, and got there right at 6:30. Mom was still trying to fight her way up to the front to check-in (probably didnt help that it had just started raining)! After checking in, we waited for about 10 minutes to be seated. Our server was Cousin Jennifer, and she was very nice. I have to admit, I was a little worried the antics would be too over the top for my very reserved mother, but I had nothing to worry about! We kept our elbows off the table and ate all our vegetables. Of course she asked about my cashew allergyby now DH was calling it the stigma. But before I go into the food, I have to comment on a guy seated across the dining room from us. He had obviously been there before, and kept trying to get the rest of his table in trouble. He would egg on Cousin Jennifer every time she walked by, saying things like if she didnt straighten up he would go get Mom, and such. It was loud, distracting, and a little embarrassing, so if that was you, shame on you! Now on to the food
For appetizers, DH and I had the Fried Herb Cheese with toasted French bread and red grapes. We expected this to be more like mozzarella sticks, but it was actually a spreadable cheese beneath a crispy crust. We spread it on our bread and it was very good. Mom had the Beer Battered Onion Rings, which were really crispy and sweet. Michael had the Chicken Noodle Soup, which he didnt say too much about, surprising, knowing him. I wish they had a boneless chicken tender dish on the menu, but DH didnt want me to ask, for fear of something embarrassing! Michael had the Golden Fried Chicken, which came with mashed potatoes, gravy, and collard greens. If you don't know what collard greens are, you are obviously not from the South! Surprise--he ate all his greens! Maybe the thought of them topped with whipped cream was more disgusting than the greens themselves...The rest of us had the Old-Fashioned Pot Roast. I dont know why people have trouble finishing their vegetables heremy dish was almost all meat and not enough mashed potatoes and carrots! DH, however, felt the balance was just right, and helped me finish my pot roast. It was really good, really reminiscent of home-cooking. We got to look at our desserts through the Viewmaster (Michael had no idea what it was, but I know we had one when we were kids!). Michael knew exactly what he wantedDads Super Sundae. It was so Super he couldnt finish it and this kid is a bottomless pit! DH had the Angel Food Cake with fresh berries and whipped cream. Again, this was the prettiest dessert award. Mom had the Apple Cobbler a la Mode, so good I wanted two desserts! I had to go with the SMores soooooo good! The graham cracker was crispy, the chocolate just starting to melt, and the marshmallows tasted like they had just come off a campfire! Overall, the atmosphere (besides Mr. Loudmouth), food, and service were all excellent. While not in our Top 5, I would eat here again if I wanted a TS before Fantasmic (that was the plan this time), but I would definitely like to come back just for the desserts! DDP value: $150.
