Day 17 – October 2nd – The Wave

The wave was a breakfast of convenience, and it was nice to just wander over to the main building ready to eat! The place was absolutely empty when we arrived for our 7.30am reservation!

34751598736_8bf47969a4_c.jpg

Our server was lovely, and quite attentive – as you would expect given we were the only table to start with!

Trent and I were happy to start with a caffeine hit:

34791761095_183c17e501_c.jpg

Organic Colombian Press Pot Coffee - "masa de los santos" is produced in the eastern part of Columbia in the town of Los Santos $8

This was quite bold for Columbian coffee, but we both enjoyed it and it was a great pick me up to start the day!

Peta opted for a hot chocolate instead ($4.39)

There is a buffet here, but we all decided on the ala carte options as we were a bit buffet’d out by this stage. Trent went for a classic:

34791755585_cbdeb70abd_c.jpg

American - two cooked to order eggs with breakfast potatoes and choice of bacon, pork sausage or chicken sausage $13

Everything was hot and he ate his way through this pretty quickly! Standard breakfast fare.

I went with something sweet for a change:

34405912170_615da322a1_c.jpg

Citrus Scented Brioche French Toast - seasonal fruit compote and choice of bacon, pork or chicken sausage $13

This was VERY tasty! The citrus gave it a great tart flavour that balance so well with the powdered sugar.

And Peta went for her usual:

33949140024_1d64bfdedc_c.jpg

Mickey Allergy waffles and fruit - $13

She wasn’t too excited by this choice by this stage of the trip but she had very little choice on the menu – and at least it was a nice safe choice.

And so, the score card:

Food: 3/5 – Standard fare, nothing fancy

Service: 4/5 – We pretty much had a personal server

Experience: 3/5 – Nothing really special about the place in terms of theming and experience

Day 17 – October 2nd – Snacks at Disney Springs

We were looking forward to another shopping expedition to Disney Springs for the evening and things were looking good that it was going to stay clear. When we left our hotel the skies were do blue that we didn’t even think to pick up our rain gear.

OOOOOOOPPPPPPPSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!

Apparently, we were destined to repeat the torrential rain of the day before and, as soon as we had parked the skies opened and it was even worse than the day before! I almost couldn’t believe it. We gave it a while (like everyone else) waiting 15 mins for it to pass, before we finally gave up and just went for it.

We had plans to get snacks while shopping and make some good use of our remaining snack credits! We head straight over to Goofy’s Candy Co, to get some snacks made up:

34791733625_f1aa574de5_c.jpg

Create Your Own Gingerbread Cookie - $4.99

There are no words for how amazing these tasted! Being able to top with what ever you want is amazing, and as you can see, they don’t skimp on the toppings! This was an excellent use of a snack credit each for Trent and I!

Peta went with her old fave:

34405899560_92d4ec76f5_c.jpg

Chocolate Fudge - $4.69

This was the biggest piece so far! And she loved every mouthful!

Day 17 – October 2nd – T-Rex

By the time we walked up to T-rex for our 6pm reservation, it was packed! The line to ask for a table was already 20 families deep and there were a lot of people waiting!!!! Thankfully, with an ADR in hand, we walked up to the desk and were seated immediately (I assume mostly due to our small party size, which definitely gets you sat quicker at a lot of places).

We were seated right by the triceratops:

34659030261_d13d63ff71_c.jpg

I didn’t grab a photo, but we all had Blue Raspberry Icees as our drink, and we pretty much ordered them as soon as we sat down (service here in the past has been VEERY slow, so I wanted a bit of a headstart!). They can be included on the dining plan if you just ask for it not to be in a specialty cup. $4.99

The chef here was SOOOOO accommodating. He basically came out and asked Peta what she felt like, then tailored things to suit.

For her appetiser, he brought out a full size salad:

20161002_181040 by Alyce Robinson, on Flickr

Omnivore's Delight - Iceberg, romaine and baby greens with goat cheese, strawberries, dried cranberries, red onion and caramelized pecans. Tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Add Grilled Chicken $2.00 additional; $16.99

It was very tasty! The strawberries and pecans added a lovely sweetness, and Trent and I helped Peta get through some of this!

Trent and I shared appetisers:

20161002_181936 by Alyce Robinson, on Flickr

Dual Dip - Our phenomenal combination of shrimp and artichoke dip and Chile Con Queso dip served with tortilla chips $11.99

This was tasty and the dips were piping hot – in fact, I burnt the tip of my tongue with the first bite…..oops ☹ the Queso was a bit flavourless but we really enjoyed the shrimp and artichoke dip – it was nice and chunky, with lots of flavour!

20161002_181940 by Alyce Robinson, on Flickr

Chicken Flatbread - Warm flatbread topped with cheddar, mozzarella, parmesan and goat cheese, caramelized onions, drizzled with a balsamic glaze $11.99

This was really tasty! The base was nice and light and the glaze added a nice sweetness. The goats cheese on it was delicious!

As if those serves weren’t bit enough, our mains were to follow. These took a while to come out:

20161002_183939 by Alyce Robinson, on Flickr

Prehistoric Pasta - sauteed zucchini, yellow squash, sun-dried and Roma tomatoes tossed with linguine, arugula, fresh mozzarella cheese and basil oil. Add shrimp or chicken for $3.00 additional; $19.99

Peta looked pretty happy with this when it arrived. She did say the actual flavour was a bit lacking, but it did have nice fresh ingredients, and she was impressed by the quality of the GF pasta.

Trent ordered the special:

20161002_184147 by Alyce Robinson, on Flickr

20161002_184144 by Alyce Robinson, on Flickr

Lemon Chicken – Served with Pasta (seasonal special) $24.99

He ate this really quickly, and said it was juicy and flavourful – nice and tart and acidic, and it went well with the pasta.

I also went with a pasta dish:

20161002_184149 by Alyce Robinson, on Flickr

Mushroom Ravioli - Walk on the wild side with our massive mushroom ravioli simmered in a rich lobster cream sauce with Roma tomatoes and fresh spinach $19.99

This was nice and creamy and the mushroom flavour was intense and delicious – I was really surprised! It reminded me of the mushroom soup at artist’s point. A surprising star of the meal!!!

Although the massive portions hadn’t left much room, dessert followed soon after. Trent and I both felt like:

20161002_191551 by Alyce Robinson, on Flickr

Cosmic Key Lime Pie - freshly baked Key Lime pie in a graham cracker crust, served with raspberry sauce and creamy whipped topping $7.99

It was just ok, more creamy flavour than actual lime, and neither of us finished ours.

Peta didn’t really have any choice, so she got:

20161002_191548 by Alyce Robinson, on Flickr

Sorbet Sampler - Mango and raspberry sorbet topped with raspberry sauce and mango puree and served with a chocolate covered wafer $6.99

I ate the wafer as they had seemingly forgotten to leave it off to keep it GF. Peta said the sorbet was actually very nice, and was a nice fresh way to end the meal.

And so, the score card:

Food: 3/5 – A few stars, but mostly just average food here

Service: 3/5 – This place is huge, and the service speed really suffers as a result

Experience: 4/5 – This is what T-rex is all about! A point deducted because the loud, bright environment isn’t for everyone and can get a bit much by the end of the meal – especially after multiple meteor showers.

Day 18 – October 3rd – Be Our Guest Breakfast

I’m not going to lie, we only did this meal for 2 reasons, given all the bad press:

1. Pre-park opening breakfast

2. Trent had never been and was interested in going in the beast’s castle.

I should have skipped it for a further 2 reasons:

1. Park opening times changed, and despite having an 8.30am reservation on a 9am opening, they wouldn’t let us in early!!!!! They made everyone wait in a line that was longer than the rope drop line, and let us in only 2 minutes or so before everyone else. By the time we got in, the park was way busy.

2. There were terrible reviews circulating about the quality of the food

None-the-less……we stuck with it. At least we were seated very quickly as we had pre-chosen our food. It was absolute chaos with the mass of people all let in at once and heading straight for BOG. I was relieved that not many others seemed to have pre-ordered so thankfully our line was super quick. We chose to sit in the west wing and it was super dark, but pretty cool.

34934866305_f9e6d8f4fb_c.jpg

34934861555_0620df0d37_c.jpg

It filled up quickly and the line for the drink machine was ridiculous.

We were served quickly:

34894223626_023b17f2f6_c.jpg

34934788665_82b0428ef4_c.jpg

Pastry Tray - Comes with meal, one per table

I don’t know why, but everything here was cold and rock hard – it must have been in the fridge right up to serving. I get that it is mass poroduced food, but at least take them out and bring them to room service before the land on the table. Chilled, hard pastries are not tasty at all….

For his meal, Trent ordered:

34894218216_89cb2d6b6d_c.jpg

Feast a la Gaston - Scrambled Eggs, Roasted Potatoes, Bacon, and Chicken Sausage served with Fresh Fruit

Trent felt the flavours here were just OK. Sadly, it was cold and that impacted on his enjoyment. It would have been a fairly solid meal if it wasn’t cold and dry.

Peta chose:

34934859695_7860b40d57_c.jpg

Allergy Waffle with fruit

This was a standard allergy waffle and it actually came warm! Phew! It really was the only thing without complaint.

I went with:

34124338353_422a8675d5_c.jpg

Vegetable Quiche - Mushroom, zucchini, bell pepper, onion and Chive Quiche served with Fresh Fruit

This was almost stone cold, and I was so disappointed. All I could really taste was egg, there wasn’t any other flavour and the pastry was a weird chewy texture. At least I ate the fruit……

After breakfast we did show Trent around, and a lovely CM took a few snaps of us in the ballroom:

34894214916_06ab69ba25_c.jpg

And so, the score card:

Food: 1/5 - Cold and just not enjoyable at all.

Service: 2/5 – Technically it’s not supposed to be full service though (despite the price!!)

Experience: 2/5 – Loud and Dark…..just doesn’t appeal to us at all. Once you’ve seen it, there isn’t really anything special. We won’t be back.

Day 18 – October 3rd – Starbucks

Now, I’m not a huge fan of Starbucks. I’m sorry, but it is considered the worst of the worst coffee here in Australia (and we only have a couple anyway – in Sydney, Melbourne and maybe? Brisbane). They opened some more and closed them due to lack of clientele – quite frankly there is such a coffee culture here that it’s hard for even Starbucks to survive.

That said, Trent had never had one, and we were kind of on a downer after BOG breakfast. Trent was in need of a pick me up, and I decided that, since we wouldn’t like the actual standard coffee. We would grab frappes instead. Why not??? These I am kind of a fan of and Peta enjoys the fact there are coffee free choices.

Even better, any drinks, any size are snack credits!!!! These would have been $5.79 each!

34894209676_61a8635736_c.jpg

They saw our just married badges! Trent thought it was ok, very sweet, but it gave him the needed pick me up! Especially on what was a very crowded day.

34934841795_18676e36e5_c.jpg

They are seriously big drinks!

I'm with you on BOG. I did breakfast with my niece 2 years ago and had the same experience with the food not being hot enough and not having much flavor.

So I have to ask; at some point in your 19 day vacation did you get tired of all of the dining? The longest I've been at Disney was probably 12 days and I can't say that got too much but I'm wondering if another week starts to wear on you? Anyway, I am thoroughly enjoying your lovely vacation!

Sorry for BOG experience. We have not tried it and don't plan to based on lackluster reviews. But we love House of Blues and have gone on our last two trips. I'm so enjoying you report. Thank you for sharing!

Actually, it didn't! Because Peta has chronic pain, sitting down and having to take a break for meals works really well for us. We also had several days that were just breakfast and dinner with snacks as lunch, so that really helped space it out.

Sorry for BOG experience. We have not tried it and don't plan to based on lackluster reviews. But we love House of Blues and have gone on our last two trips. I'm so enjoying you report. Thank you for sharing!

Yes, I should have listened to those reviews! But it seems to be you can find good and bad for every restaurant. I can't believe that it continues to be booked out at 180 days.

Day 18 – October 3rd – Cinderella’s Royal Table Dinner

Out of all of us, Trent was definitely most excited for tonight’s dinner, as both Peta and I have experienced meals in the castle before! When we showed up, they gave us a bit of a fright as they couldn’t find our dining reservation!!!! Luckily, it was a system error and they just refreshed everything – but they only realised that after another 2 people couldn’t find their ADRs either!

If you haven’t eaten here before, when you enter the castle, you stand in a line for a photo pass photo of Cinderella:

34894131896_faa42c91f2_c.jpg

After that, you sit and wait to be called and are then escorted up the winding staircase to the actual restaurant. We got sat right by a pole in the middle of the restaurant:

34934833375_56941eb293_c.jpg

The menu here changes pretty regularly, and I was surprised by the appetiser:

34894196136_169dd11411_c.jpg

Chef's Tasting Plate - Cinderella has instructed her Royal Chef to create a selection of "Specialties of the Castle" for your enjoyment

The items here were very nice, and a decent selection, but it wasn’t what I was expecting, and didn’t actually seem like a lot at all between 2 (and there were tables of 3 and 4 with the same size serving).

They brought Peta her own veggie salad:

34091540744_b95fe04b3b_c.jpg

This looked like a weird mish-mash of vegetables but she said it was fresh and tasty. It had a vinaigrette on it to give it a bit more flavour.

All the characters started to arrive shortly after this was served. They announced them, and then they all visited us in quick succession:

34894163156_5056fa3d5c_c.jpg

34091512254_1783156c31_c.jpg

We then enjoyed the wishing stars, and Trent was a big fan of his sword:

34894177686_38aabdc52b_c.jpg

For mains, Trent and I found it a tough decision as nothing on the menu really stood out. On the end, we both went with the chicken:

34124281713_8e36d853cd_c.jpg

Pan-seared all-Natural Chicken - Goat Cheese Polenta, Seasonal Vegetables, and crispy Pancetta with Chicken Demi

I hadn’t held high hopes for the food here, recalling it to be average. This changed my mind! It was the most phenomenal chicken dish, and a real high light of the trip. We both ate every mouthful. The chicken had an amazing crispy skin and the goat cheese polenta was so so soooooooo creamy and delicious. My mouth is watering just thinking about this, and we still both reminisce over it!

Peta had the:

34124276373_a7d3634ff7_c.jpg

Seasonal Gnocchi with Roasted Vegetables -
Eggplant, Mushrooms, and Squash tossed with Gnocchi, Arugula, White Wine Butter Sauce, and finished with shaved Drunken Goat Cheese and Leeks. Also available with Rice instead of Gnocchi or as a Vegan Offering without Cheese and Butter Sauce

This was adapted by the chef to be with quinoa so it was GF and didn’t really end up anything like what was on the menu – he obviously took a bit of creative license. Despite this, Peta really enjoyed this and was keen for all the well-cooked vegetables.

Dessert arrived almost as soon as our plates were cleared, and I couldn’t help feeling rushed to get out and make way for the next table.

I had:

34934799175_d1db285a2a_c.jpg

Gus and Jaq's Favorites - White Chocolate-Jasmine Tea Mousse, Lemon and Lime Curd with Honey-Oat Crisp

This was creamy and not really as fluffy and light as I had imagined. Despite this, it was so nicely balanced with the citrus curd and a nice end to the meal. I wouldn’t hesitate to order it again.

Trent went for something nice and simple:

34547410720_b6c250b00f_c.jpg

Lemon Tart -
Garnished with Raspberries, a No Sugar Added Dessert – With a bonus celebration cupcake for his birthday!

This was tasty and very lemony, but the shell was a little hard and that made it difficult to eat. Overall it was a solid dessert!

Peta had a GF adaptation of:

34091496524_5913b5d03a_c.jpg

The Clock Strikes Twelves -
Flourless Chocolate Cake with Berry Compote and Anglaise Sauce

I recall her eating every mouthful! It was rich, fluffy and delicious!

And so, the score card:

Food: 4/5 – We were pleasantly surprised here!

Service: 3/5 – Feeling rushed at a very expensive meal isn’t great.

Experience: 5/5 – eating in the castle with princesses – need I say more? Just look at Trent’s facial expressions above! It’s a must do, experience wise!

Day 18 and you still have 73 snack credits left!!! I hope you saved room in your luggage to take home plenty of Mickey rice crispy treats!

Day 19 – October 4th – Chef Mickeys Breakfast

Chef Mickey’s was really a meal of convenience for us, very easy to get to given our stay at BLT, and after a previous dinner experience with cold food and poor service, we wouldn’t have given it another go otherwise.

34895325296_acfc8567c6_c.jpg

We had an early reservation (7.30am) and got there early. Despite this, it was already rapidly filling up and we waited 15 minutes with a pager before being called. After this, we were escorted to the statue of chef mickey for a photo-pass photo:

34935782415_6d8561f812_c.jpg

Given this is a character meal, I find it odd that this is not actually with Mickey, but rather a statue. None-the-less we would still get to experience the characters so I didn’t really give it another thought.

Our server here was rather abrupt and can only really be described as in a state of panic. I do wonder if she was new, but she appeared to be frantically running between different tables and unable to keep up with requests. She brought me coffee, not the tea I had asked for (which was fine – I will drink either) and needed 3 reminders to bring Peta juice (which she then ended up bringing for the whole table).

Our server’s English was not great and I think this was contributing to the difficulties. I asked for hot sauce multiple times and she didn’t seem to get what I was asking. When she came to clear our plates, she knocked a full glass of juice over, across the table and on to my lap. Of course, she apologised profusely, but it had unfortunately sprayed across a woman sat next to me on the bench who was with the table next to us. She had a few choice words I’m sure, but they were not in English (probably for the best given all the children around!) – from her yelling tone I’m certain they were not like ours – calm and telling the server that it was OK, accidents happen.

I didn’t really feel bad for this woman though – we had been swamped quickly by all the characters at once, and she kept barging into me every time she stood up or sat down. At one point, she even managed to elbow me, despite my desperate efforts to avoid this by sitting on the other side of the bench seat! I asked politely a couple of times and excused myself each time I stood up or sat down, but she either couldn’t take the hint, didn’t care, or perhaps, simply didn’t understand me.

The characters were fun, but super rushed – it was literally, cameras out, ‘quick you can have a photo’, ‘oh wait, you want more than one???? – if you must’, ‘OK, bye!’. We did get some nice snaps though:

34935864415_57eab39c4e_c.jpg

34935861495_fbd3e65e20_c.jpg

We didn’t get a chance to eat our food until after this and by then it was a little cold:

34895318996_8b376dfd00_c.jpg

34935875015_92c853bc74_c.jpg

Allergy waffles:

34803638341_2c485cb6b3_c.jpg

Not to worry, we then had time to go back and grab another! Sadly, that was also cold and I then decided our meals weren’t cold because we hadn’t eaten straight away, they were cold because the food wasn’t being kept sufficiently warm ☹

And so, the score card:

Food: 1/5 - Cold and Meh!

Service: 2/5 – Poor server was just so flustered!

Experience: 2/5 – So rushed!

Oh don't worry, we were planning on it! Actually we already had traded many in by that stage, but I wasn't counting them in the tally - each time we moved hotel we had to use up the remainder before midnight on checkout day (and before we could activate the next plan). Photos to come on day 20!

Thank you for doing all the work for us. We are going in July for 5 days. Glad you liked H&V. We are skeptical but got a music of Pixar reservation before dinner.

We haven't really enjoyed the food or the experience at Chef Mickey's either time we went there. Question on your CRT meal-what is the green sauce with your chicken dish?

Do you know, we actually didn't figure that out! It's not really described well on the menu, I thought it was the Goat Cheese Polenta, but not sure what made it green? It was creamy and complimented the chicken so well!

Day 19 – October 4th – Food And Wine Festival and Snacks in France

By mid-afternoon, we were feeling rather peckish, so we opted for some food and wine indulgence!

Sadly, the weather had other ideas. As we entered the world showcase, we headed straight for something Trent and I had seen a few days earlier, and were keen to try at the Hawaiian booth:

34803601091_4fc084086b_c.jpg

Kalua Pork Slider with Sweet and Sour Dole® Pineapple Chutney and Spicy Mayonnaise – $4.25

This was tasty, but it really needy more mayo – which, in turn, needed more spice! Overall it was a little dry and, although the flavour was good, we wouldn’t get it again,

After that, the skies opened! We head around the showcase in our ponchos, but with the wind and rain combo most stands had closed up. Oh well, we head in to France seeking some sweet indulgence at:

34803594821_faa3ec3537_c.jpg

Here, there was only one obvious choice:

34895270236_292fd8ceaf_c.jpg

A trio of Creme Brulee! - Caramelized vanilla custard $4.50

This was a very very very good crème brulee! We all devoured it standing though, as everyone else had also had the same idea to get out of the rain! It was packed, and EPCOT was having quite the flooding problem from the downpour. After a long wait in line and eating the rain was still going steady, but the wind had died down, with ponchos on, we continued around and there were no lines at the few open booths. We continued to snack on some more lunch snacks.

34548270540_9a5a62709c_c.jpg

As it was still raining, we just grabbed a couple of things and stood under random bits of shelter to enjoy!

Africa

34895263066_21a213ee7f_c.jpg

Buttered Chicken with Micro Cilantro and Naan Bread – $5.00

This was very warming and quite rich, but we didn’t find it all that flavourful and have much higher expectations. You could taste the coriander (cilantro) but that was kind of it. We wouldn’t repeat.

China

34895258436_5db802592a_c.jpg

Beijing Roasted Duck in a Steamed Bun with Hoisin Sauce – $6.50

This on the other hand was very tasty! The hoisin sauce was perfectly sweet and the duck was great. Only complaint was that the bun was a bit too thick.

Day 19 – October 4th – Frontera Cocina Dinner

34548306830_fc704c4b3c_c.jpg

Atomic Guacamole - Diced cucumbers, habanero salsa, cilantro, and onions served with chips $10

This was amazing! Creamy guacamole, and powerful punch from the habanero salsa. When ordering, our server felt it necessary to say “Ummmmmm…..that’s really hot” to which my reply was “I know” with a coy smile. It was super spicy but between Trent and I we devoured every mouthful and his mouth dropped open when he saw that we had almost licked the bowl HAHA! My mouth is seriously watering just thinking of this, it was so good!

34772110102_63584e8859_c.jpg

Chipotle Chicken Tostada - Crispy tostadas, creamy black beans, chipotle chicken, crema, queso fresco, and avocado (contains dairy) $13

Peta had great choices here, and the chef basically indicated that most dishes were GF, and any Peta might want could likely be very easily made vegetarian! Good news!!! She started with:

34895252396_90c5428c89_c.jpg

Zucchini and Poblano Rajas Tostadas - Crispy tostadas, garlicky grilled squash with poblano peppers, grilled mojo, fresh goat cheese, creamy black beans, pea shoots and frisee (contains dairy) $12

34092504964_8137774f61_c.jpg

Red Chile Chicken Enchiladas - Just made corn tortillas, chipotle chicken filling, guajillo chili sauce, queso Chihuahua, crispy onions, creamy black beans (contains dairy, gluten) $22

34092497604_8c5f28d7a7_c.jpg

A take on: Mushroom Torta - woodland mushrooms, chipotle garlic mojo, goat cheese, arugula, lime, chipotle salsa, Taquiera salad (contains dairy, gluten) $14 (Obviously adapted to be not on the bun, they gave corn wraps instead!)

34895230806_f39a6c7a67_c.jpg

Carnitas - Slow cooked pork shoulder with garlic and lime, black beans refritos with queso fresco, guacamole, pickled red onions, salsa verde, served with warm corn tortillas (contains dairy) $23

No idea why I didn’t photo the tortillas, but they were presented heated in a pan, as you would expect

Now, I have to admit the dessert menu here is limited. We actually ended up with all 3 of the possible choices:

34548275620_8f3d9a6881_c.jpg

Pecan Pie Bar - Served with Mexican vanilla ice cream- chocolate sauce (contains dairy, gluten, nuts) $9

Platano Sundae - warm fried plantains, Mexican vanilla ice cream, Cajeta, toasted pecans (contains dairy, nuts) $9

Having plantains, she had to keep this far away from me with my banana allergy! But it was the only option for her. She quite enjoyed it, although it wouldn’t have been her first choice. She decided it was just ok, but a nice end to round of the meal, none-the-less.

And so, the score card:

Food: 4/5 – A real surprise stand out!

Service: 4/5 – Very attentive and friendly even if they didn’t think I could handle the atomic guacamole

Experience: 4/5 – Great casual atmosphere, well themed!
