A Tale of Two Buffets (vegetarian family)

Hello everyone,

We had two TS meals (H&V and Boma) and 4 CS meals (Artist's Palette, CHH twice, Pizzafari) during our recent trip. These were actually the first TS meals we had ever had at WDW! Our last visit was 7 years ago. The rest of the time we ate in at our villa at SSR using groceries from Wegoshop and a few things we brought with us. We eat seafood but no chicken, pork, beef or other meat.

We are: Me (age 40, likes most things besides meat!), DD11a (twin with somewhat adventurous adult tastes), DD11b (twin with a more limited palate), DD7 (resembles DD11b in looks and eating habits). For two meals we were joined by DH (age 59, loves to eat, unfortunately hurt his leg and decided to rest & relax at the resort so did not come along to the parks with us)

I will start with the buffets since that's what I put in the title.

Hollywood & Vine I booked this dinner for one reason: the Fantasmic Dinner package. It was the cheapest of the 3 FDP options and I know that buffets work really well for my girls because they can see the food, try a little bit, go back for more of what they liked.

We arrived just at 5:00 for our 5:00 ADR. So many were waiting they had run out of buzzers. They said to wait nearby and they'd call my name. The kids sat on a wall where they were able to get a view of the passing parade! That was lucky. Eventually the parade ended and DD11b said she needed to use the bathroom. We waited until a CM came outside and I asked if she could use the restroom. He said of course and told her how to find it and she set off. Then he took about 6 steps away and called out...our name! The wait was about 15-20 minutes. After he showed us the table I went over to the restroom to escort DD11b so she wouldn't go back outside to look for us.

I loved our table. One bad thing I'd heard about H&V was the noise level. We were all the way on the left hand side (as you enter) in a little nook! We had a window on one side of our table and walls on two other sides. It was secluded and calm.

I sampled
ceasar salad-- delicious. I got more of this and would have eaten more than I did but I knew it was very high calorie
roasted beets-- OK
endive salad-- OK
spicy fennel salad-- didn't seem spicy at all
rice-- awful. It was chewy and I just hated it
shrimp & cocktail sauce-- can't go wrong with this. DD11a likes this too
salmon-- fine, I had more of this, and DDs 11a and 11b had some as well
garlic mashed potatoes-- DD11a took some of this but it looked to me like it had bits of bacon in it. I cautioned her but she decided to go ahead and eat it. Then it occured to me, if it did have bacon it would have said so on the sign. I asked a CM and she explained that was bits of the red potato skin and the dish was vegetarian. So I tried some and it was OK. Fine but I didn't love it.

There were a couple of other things I could have eaten but passed up.

In addition to the adult foods enjoyed by DD11a, DDs had
rolls
broccoli
corn
mac & cheese
penne pasta from the roasted vegetable pasta dish

They seemed happy enough.

Actually, what happened was, after my first round of samples, I had gone back to get proper portions of the things I had liked. At the end of the line I noticed DD11a at the dessert table! I firmly informed her that it was not time for dessert. We were not rushing through the meal. This was a full park day with no return to the hotel. This dinner was a time to rest and cool off as well as eat. When she got back to the table and observed her sisters and me still in the middle of dinner, she decided to get some more dinner food!

Finally I deemed it was time for dessert. My girls were awestruck at the idea of unlimited dessert because we don't have dessert every night and if we do it's small portions.

brownies (DDs 11a and 7)
ice cream (DDs 11a and 7)
chocolate mousse cup (DDs 11a, 11b and me)-- we agreed this was the best thing & had several each. In fact after the meal we agreed that the last one we had each eaten had been a mistake!
key lime tart (DDs 11a, 11b and me)-- I thought this was good and I had more than one but I scooped out the filling and ate it with a spoon rather than waste calories on the crust
cheesecake (me)-- this was good but the mousse & key lime things were better
carrot cake (me)-- took 1 bite and discarded
three berry cobbler (me)-- sampled and did not finish

Other things available that we did not try were pineapple upside down cake, rice krispy treats and apple cobbler

Our server was fine. She brought drinks and removed plates efficiently. Speaking of drinks, the girls had Sprite and lemonade. I had Diet Coke and water. I wish they would offer a drink with no caffeine and no calories other than water (diet Sprite, caffeine free diet Coke, etc.) but no.

The FDP worked out wonderfully as by the time we took our seats, the arena seemed completely full except for the FDP section, which was only half or a third full. So it was worth it to not have to get there earlier. But I would not eat there without the FDP as a motivation.

That was a full day at the parks, and the next day we slept in, went to DTD, played in the pool, and then headed to Boma for dinner.

Our ADR was 6:20. Bus service took longer than I expected, so we arrived just on time. The CM checking me in said she had no idea how long we might be waiting. But as I walked away from the podium, the buzzer went off!

Our server (Barbi) was very nice. She described the dishes for us and made many recommendations.

DDs had fruit, French fries, penne pasta, the ubiquitous mac & cheese. Seems very ordinary to me yet they said several times that they loved it and wanted to come back. Maybe they were responding to the decor and the atmosphere.

Meanwhile, DH and I had
**butternut squash soup-- one of the most delicious things I have ever had
she-crab soup-- excellent
curried coconut seafood stew-- excellent and DH's favorite of the three soups that we tried
black olive hummus and lavosh-- very good
shraab-- crisp bread. I prefered the lavosh and would have liked a bread with a different texture
black-eyed peas with ginger juice-- did not care for texture of the beans
raisin rice-- this was good, not great
**potatoes with Afritude-- liked these very much. I enjoy any kind of seasoned roasted potatoes.
fufu-- I found this too sweet
pap & sheeba-- this sounded good when she described it but it was just OK
fried plantain corn salad-- this was tasty
avacado, papaya & grapefruit salad-- I like all of these ingredients and was happy to eat this but it didn't really meld into anything more than the sum of the parts
watermelon rind salad-- I liked it but it was intense. a small amount was enough.
pasta salad-- this had a curry sauce and was really good
African fruit salad-- very good
**barbequed tamarind salmon-- also one of the very best things I have ever had

I had intended to restrain myself, but the butternut squash soup and the salmon overwhelmed my defenses. I couldn't eat much dessert. I had one of the fabled zebra domes and liked it, but I didn't swoon over it. The chocolate mousse crunch was another story. I found it perfectly divine. I had a bite of DH's cassava cake, which was OK, and a bite of his M'Hencha, which is a nut in pastry thing, kind of like a dry baklava. I thought that was great and would definitely eat that again.

The girls had a zebra dome each, chocolate mousse crunch, flourless chocolate cake and they might have tried a couple of other things. I recommended that they not bother with anything as ordinary as a chocolate chip cookie, but they went ahead & they liked it.

At this point, unfortunately, Boma or at least our server began to disappoint us. DH asked for coffee and it took about 20 minutes for her to bring it. She said she'd bring the check, but 30 minutes later we were still waiting and I asked a passing CM if he could help us out. Her tip definitely diminished during our wait. When we finally were able to leave, it was about an hour after we had finished eating. By this time it was after 8:00, and since the bus system had been slower than I'd expected on the way over, and we had another park day coming up, we decided to take a cab back to our resort. This ride cost more than I thought it would, but it was worth it to have the girls asleep in bed by 9:00.

We plan to return-- the highlights were so excellent!-- but I might go for an earlier ADR and/or let the server know that we don't want to linger.

Enjoyed reading your reviews ~ Thanx for sharing.

I will add my impressions of the three CS places we ate at

Artist's Palette

We had
lobster bisque & croissant-- DH said this was good
roasted vegetable flatbread-- this was fine. I'd get it again because there aren't too many choices here but I did not adore it.
2 kids mac & cheese
1 kids PBJ

Something I got a couple of times here was a giant cookie with multicolored Mickey-head sprinkles. Only $2.01 (counting DVC member discount) for a very large and tasty treat. (There were also chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin versions.) One of these is fine for my 3 girls to share.

I surreptitiously bought a sprinkle cookie while we were leaving the resort for the airport and then presented it to my DDs a couple of hours later when we were waiting in line to board the plane, as their "last taste" of WDW. That produced some smiles!

Park meals... I first have to say a huge thank you to the DISboards for posting all the menus. I know that vegetarian selections will be limited. By checking the menus I was able to zero in on the best places for us before the trip, not when we were hot and hungry and trying the make the most of our park time. But if you are reading this you already know how valuable the DISboards are.

Columbia Harbor House

First time around we got
1 anchors aweigh tuna sandwich for DD11b and me to share
1 fish & chips for DD11a and DD7 to share
1 side order fries to augment what comes with the fish
2 chocolate milks & 1 regular milk for DDs

$20.55 for lunch for 4!

Actually once the food is on the table we all share everything. All three DDs had some of the fish sticks and the fries, DD11a had some of "our" tuna sandwich, and I drank some of their chocolate milk. And we did not even finish everything! There was still a crust of sandwich left, and it had come with potato chips in a bag rather than loose on the plate, and we just tucked the bag into our knapsack to eat the next day.

When we returned to MK another day and were ready for dinner the girls opted to return here.

We had
1 bowl clam chowder for DD11a and me to share
1 fish & chips for DD11b and DD7 to share
1 extra fries
3 chocolate milks

total cost: $20.18!

Again not even this modest amount of food was finished before we left the table. When I combined the leftover chocolate milk into a single bottle it was just about full. But we drank it by the end of the evening.

This is a good place for us. I didn't even get to try the hummus sandwich! But DDs are not interested in that and clearly it's better for us to get things that can be shared.

I thought the tuna sandwich was very good. The fish & French fries were fine. The clam chowder was fine too, especially once I added some pepper packets.

Pizzafari

For the 4 of us I got
2 cheese pizzas
1 order breadsticks
1 large lemonade

Cost: $18.71

This food was fine; it hit the spot especially in contrast to the mac & cheese and fried food the girls had been having at the restaurants. I bought enough for each of us to have 2 slices of pizza (1/2 a cheese pizza) and a breadstick. But the girls all ate only 1 slice of pizza & their breadstick. I ate an extra slice of pizza but that left two. I was very pleased that I figured out how to save these for later (put another plate upside down on top of pizza plate, and wedge this into a small plastic WDW bag. It fits snugly so that the two plates are held together. No mess no waste!) I ate these two slices along with some of the clam chowder for dinner at the MK later that day.

So, I would return to any of these places for CS. I prefer CHH and Pizzafari over AP because there are more things the kids like. I did not spend as much on meals out as I had expected (meaning CS, because the TS was buffet and I knew how much it would cost) because we have small appetites. If we can do DDP for free, I might give it a try, but it makes no sense for us to pay for it, since my older two DDs and before long my youngest DDs count as adults.

Great reviews :thumbsup2

Your title is a bit misleading, though. I expected to read about items a *true* vegetarian would find on the buffet at H&V -- as soon as I read that you had Ceasar salad, I knew that wasn't going to be the case! But I enjoyed reading your excellent reviews.

Great reviews. I'm not vegetarian but was interested to see how hard/easy it would be to get good veg meals at Disney.

BTW your kids are adorable

Dear CP'ersMom, I agree, no way are we true vegetarians. But I thought my reviews would be most useful to people on the vegetarian spectrum and that should be flagged in the title.

Thanks, Swimnoid!

It's been a week since our departure day and it seems like so long ago! Can't wait to get back to do more playing, swimming and eating!

Thanks for the review. :sunny: DD is a vegetarian and will appreciate this.

OT: Oh my, what a cute family you have. I love the photo in your signature! Did you take that yourself? Great colors, great angles. Everyone looks happy. Kali River Rapids, I presume. :thumbsup2

Your reviews should be very helpful to people ~ great details :) You did a wonderful job.

It's been a week since our departure day and it seems like so long ago!

Isn't that the truth! We just got back Thursday and I already feel like that!

Thanks for all the specifics. :thumbsup2

Boma is a place we haven't tried and really want to go to next trip. Sounds like we should do it!

I'm loving all these vegetarian reviews! Thanks :thumbsup2

I actually used to be pesco-vegetarian and made my way to be a true vegetarian. I have a slight allergy to some seafood so I just decided to keep away from it all together.

Dear Tink, THANKS! Yes, I took the picture. We had ridden KRR twice, but the girls felt they didn't get wet enough on the second trip :confused3 , so they made use of the small fountain/water play area nearby to really get drenched!
