Amazing August - W.I.S.H. Goals

Hi All! I'm back from my work trip and had a lovely time eating good southern food! The scale wasn't happy but it wasn't too bad. I am up about 2 lbs. For 5 days of BBQ and fried chicken and biscuits and desserts-- I'll take it.

I also realized that I have turned a real corner. I actually went for three little runs while there. I could just tell I wasn't moving enough even though I was walking about 14,000 steps a day. I needed to get my heart pumping a little. Never have I ever exercised while out of town/on vacation. Even still, I definitely needed to be eating less but oh well LOL!

I had hoped to loose more this month, but I think it will just end up being a wash and I'll end up where I started. (I keep telling myself better than a gain... better than a gain!)

Do you watch your sugar intake, especially the hidden sugars? Do you feel a difference when you eat less sugar? Do you have any tips as to how avoid sugar?

Hmm... I am too busy watching my salt to think about my sugar! Haha! I used to watch it better, but now I am trying to eat a less processed diet as possible and find that it naturally eliminates a lot of the extra sugar. I definitely do crave it though. And it snowballs-- once I have a little, I want more the next day and the next, and so on. Plus, I feel like I probably eat to much fruit which is how I am compensating for less cookies LOL I will still count it as a small victory!

I once read an article about a family who lives with a constant meal plan. They figured out that far too much of their spare time went into food planning and food preperation. So they have a two months plan that just keeps repeating over and over again. They have a day every two weeks where they try something new and if the new thing is great, they might throw something else out. They also had a general structure like Tuesday is pasta, Thursday is chicken and such. To me this sounded brilliant and scary at the same time. But they said for them the gain in time and less worrying was worth it to sometimes eat something that they did not feel like that day.

This is fascinating! I wonder how it would work for me. I am really starting to dread the Sunday night ritual of playing "What do you want to eat?" with DH for a hour and then end up planning variations on the same theme from the week before, and the week before that, and the week before that.....

I forgot to answer today's questions. I eat sugar too much I think. I do need to cut back. I will never cut it out completely though. I like my ice cream, cookie dough and pop too much. But I don't make cookies like I used too as I would eat all the batter. So if I don't make it I don't eat it. Christmas times is enough for the year. I am going to start limiting pop to a can a week starting in September.

Yesterday's question: I never wanted to believe it, but I do see a huge difference in my self control regarding food in general depending on how much sugar I eat. I find that a small sweet snack per day is still ok, but when I overdo it then it gets worse and worse every day. Actually, fruit can have a similar effect, that's why I have really reduced the amount of fruit in my diet. I find bananas work well for me, apples, though I love them, make me totally hungry though!

Also, please remember that on Saturday we have September 1st!! Which brings us the end of August and the end of this thread...

Woohoo... it's a short work week, since I'm taking Friday off and next week is even shorter since Monday is the holiday and I'm taking Tuesday off as well.

I left the office stressed yesterday, due a couple different things that are going on, and it kind of manifested itself in being frustrated that I was at the bottom of my FitBit Weekday Challenge group, even though I was doing a high step count. I decided I was going to climb to at least the middle of the pack so I went out for an evening walk, and later walked in place while watching a really interesting Ken Burns show on Mark Twain. There was one other gal in the group still walking and we were neck and neck, so I kept going, and going... I ended up getting up to second place, with 15,000 steps for the day. Between that and what I've already done this morning, I've got my 100 miles in for the month.

I signed up for Pilates and my first class is tomorrow evening... really looking forward to it.

Tuesday of next week I have an appointment with the foot bath gal, for an energy clearing facial... I'm quite intrigued to find out what it is all about. Then Friday of next week I go in and get my Juvaderm refreshed... woohoo!

I am woohoo the DD is doing great so far this year. No signs of anxiety.

I am also taking off a half day on Friday and we are closed on Monday. Friday we are going to our outdoor theater. We will be watching the orchestra play the music to Star Wars A New Hope while it is playing for us to watch. We went to this the last 2 years. First we saw Indiana Jones and then last year was E.T. They do such a great job. We also get to take food and drinks in. They they have fireworks after. It is a lot of fun.

I did walk in the morning on Monday and Tuesday but not this morning. I was ready to go at 5 today but I couldn't wake DH up. He was out. I won't go by myself because it is way to dark and no one around at that time. Hopefully we can go tomorrow.

I'll be off tomorrow, so I'm doing my end-of-month check in today:

I made my lose 5 pounds goal and my walk 100 mikes goal, but didn't make my goal to complete the on-line course - all in all August was a very successful month. I'm looking forward to the long weekend, and hope all that celebrate the US Labor Day have a lovely holiday!

Thanks @Flossbolna for hosting August... well done you!

Thank you for hosting August, Flossbolna! The month went so quickly! I really want to read that article-I also have a sweet tooth, but I honestly feel better keeping my sugar intake under control. And I enjoy that piece of dark chocolate so much more when I’m not eating a lot of other sweet things. And at my age I have just accepted the idea of not eating dessert every night and a cocktail on Friday instead of more often.
Now, I will host September-but I am not proficient as all of you with your beautiful graphics and photos-but I would be happy to start the thread and come up with some questions and maybe links to articles? Is that okay with everyone? I am busy until tomorrow evening with my grandson, but I could get the thread started over the weekend and get us going by Monday.
Happy weekend everyone, so glad for the worker bees (at least in the US) having Monday off!

I have to have spontaneity. I never know what I'll be craving so meal prep doesn't work that great for me. Most of the time, I know the basics of at least one meal a day and eat accordingly.

Hello! I am a little jealous that you can spontaneously prepare healthy meals - if I leave it to spontaneous we end up with take-out or other poor choices.

Meal planning--I just do a few days at a time. Remember @pjilla? She used to do two months at a time.

I do remember @pJilla - but I don't remember she did 2 month plans - but I think I am understanding more why she did :-)

DH and I are pretty sure his grandmother is mad at us and DH's parents. She really didn't talk to us. She is 77 and was just off on Saturday. Last week we got into it with her because she has to have her shoulder replaced (she had the other one done a few years ago) and we told her that she needs to go into a nursing home until she is back on her feet. Like for 2 weeks. She would get the therapy that she needs and the 24 hour care that she needs as well. This is what she did last time. Those first 2 weeks are too much for us to handle. Last time she was pretty much incoherent during that time and couldn't do anything for herself. We have time to get it figured out but this is not what she wanted to hear from us. Other then this the day was great.

 That is hard - but you are right specialised care initially sounds like it best suits her needs.

What aspect of Life do you want to gain the most? Have you made any progress toward this?

I want to regain confidence and just experience a feeling wellbeing knowing that I am doing all I can to live my best life. The extra weight saps my confidence and knowing I am not looking after myself properly just adds to feelings of anxiousness about my health. I wish I could say I have made more progress - but I haven't gotten very far.

So, let's talk about sugar! Do you watch your sugar intake, especially the hidden sugars? Do you feel a difference when you eat less sugar? Do you have any tips as to how avoid sugar?

Sugar is also my downfall - I have switched mostly to sugar free soft drink - during the work week I try to mainly drink water during the day at work.

This sounds very interesting to me - I think this is what I need to consider trying - and yes - a lot of time can be spent looking for recipe ideas.

Also: Have you considered to involve the kids more in the meal making process? One of my colleagues has three boys, 15, 14 and 12. And they all have one day every week where they are responsible for the family dinner. They need to plan what they want to make beforehand as the parents will do the shopping for what is needed and the main rule is that the meal is not allowed to come from a can. Of course the parents helped them in the beginning to figure out what they wanted to make and how realistic certain things were. And to help them plan a nutritious meal, too. They started it a year ago and it seems to work quite well. He says sometimes the boys get lazy and sometimes things aren't really that tasty. But he is impressed how their skills have improved over the year and says that it really helps him and his wife to not be responsible for feeding the family three out of 7 days.

This also - I definitely do need to involve them more - I have done it before but have trouble maintaining it - I will look to start it during the next school break - DS17 is in term 3 of year 12 and this term is when they do their bigger testing for university entrance rankings - so will wait till that is over before adding to his workload. They definitely need the life-skill of cooking so I am all for it - I tend to just do it as it is quicker and easier.

Here in Germany this is standard after such surgery. After hospital you would go to an institution where they take care of your recovery. We call it a rehab, but I know that rehab in English is something quite different! But ultimately it is like a nursing home with the difference that all the people there are people who have to get back onto their feet after surgery or a strok or such.

We also have rehab units attached to most of our hospitals that some people enter after certain surgeries before going home.

Congrats - that is a great realisation - well done for running :-)

That is great news - I take it she has a different teacher this year?

It has been a crazy week for me. I think I read on here that someone's daughter was recovering from Mono - so I know you will relate...

DD14 has been feeling tired the last 2 weeks, taking herself to bed by about 8.30 most nights (definitely not her usual bedtime) - I assumed it was as she was still regaining her usual eating habits after he oral surgery in July and that both her and I can typically sit low in iron and VB12. So we headed to Drs last Friday - they ordered blood tests. Saturday lunch time we had just started eating when the GP rang to say - initial blood results were showing levels indicating something was going on with her liver function and to take her straight to Emergency at the Hospital for more tests!!! So off we raced a little freaked - initial blood tests there were showing infections mononucleosis - an ulstrasound showed that her liver and spleen were enlarged. We left there with strict instructions about no sport or trauma to her abdomen as she was now at high risk to rupture her spleen. We had a list of symptoms to watch for to take her back if needed. We had Monday off as she was a little overwhelmed and while the school informed all her teachers about it and to keep an eye on her when she returned. Tuesday she went to school - then just before dinner she complained of feeling unwell - she did not look great and was running a high fever that was climbing as well as complaining about stomach discomfort - so much to her displeasure back we headed to Emergency - they kept her overnight on a fluid drip, gave her pain relief, monitored her and re-scanned her in the morning - by this time the EBV virus results were back and were confirming the glandular fever diagnosis. So I spent the night sleeping on a recliner chair next to her. She has been doing much better since her release from hospital - but my goodness it has been pretty stressful!

So have told her this is another reason we need to eating healthy at the moment - to give her liver a rest and to give her the best energy dense foods to help with the fatigue.

I really don't think I have achieved any of my goals this month - although I will say that my eating generally has been a lot better than it could have gotten - given the situation.

Thankyou @Flossbolna for doing a wonderful job as host.

@4Mickeys what a scary situation!! I had glandular fever when I was 12 and was misdiagnosed as Hepatitis B. That was before they had invented tests for viruses. It was exactly because of the liver problems that I had due to the glandular fever. According to my doctor it was a common misdiagnosis in the 80s. I ended up in the isolation ward at hospital for a week. The only good side effect: I got an electronic game to entertain me because it was soooo boring there.

That is great news - I take it she has a different teacher this year?
She gets different teachers each year and now that she is in middle school she has like 8 different teachers. She had great teachers last year that were very helpful with her anxiety and DD really liked them. School in general gives her anxiety. She has been working with a therapist since March and i think this is part of her starting out great. I had a meeting with the school at the end of last year and we talked about her being on a team (the kids on the same team have the same core teachers, math, English, social studies and science) since she already knew and had a connection with one of the teachers. This I think is the biggest reason she is doing so great. She has this teacher for Math, Study Hall, Homeroom and once a week for Core Extension. So she sees him a lot. Her team of teachers are great so far and I really like them.

I am so glad your daughter is doing better. What a scary week for you.

++++++++++++++++++++

My month has been a waste. So much stuff this month. The cruise, the burn and parties. I will start in September with sticking to my goal. I do have to say the upside to this month, other then being on the cruise, is that I only gained 1 pound while on vacation. Partly because i didn't eat much as I never felt great.

Thank You @Flossbolna for hosting this month.

if I leave it to spontaneous we end up with take-out or other poor choice
I won't lie, most of the time I don't exactly consider them "healthy" with the amount of extras my bf adds. Cheeses, oils, sauces, butters, etc. But I usually only eat a little portion of the main course and fill up on the dry roasted veggies I usually make as a side.
Also I read what happened with your daughter.. scary!! Sorry you guys had to go through that. Glad she's doing better tho :)

4Mickeys, so sorry your daughter has been sick with mono! Our daughter had it in college (15 years ago) and was so sick the RA called us to come get her. So scary, but with rest they recover more quickly than you expect. Don’t be alarmed if she seems to be sleeping a lot, it’s part of getting better. Hope she feels better soon!

September is up! I hope to “see” everyone there!
Have a relaxing, fun weekend!

@4Mickeys that's so scary! Glad you were able to get her the care she needed. Hope she has a speedy recovery. Yea for eating healthy now!
@Flossbolna Thank you so much for hosting. It was great, as usual.
@sjrec thanks for taking on September. I'll be right over!!
