Anything like the fort?

I know this is an apple to orange question but it there any thing similar to the fort? We have to travel 1600 miles round trip for the beauty and experience and was wondering if there are closer campgrounds, within 500 miles of Cincinnati Area. Wouldn't mind something closer to home on our off years of the fort (went last year. planning next year).

We've camped in many areas of the country and haven't found anything like Fort Wilderness which reinforces why we would travel so far for the quality of campgrounds that Disney offers. And, because of their quality offerings, we have been able to justify paying the higher cost to stay at Fort Wilderness.

That being said, we have camped all over the country and have found campgrounds that offer outstanding features of their own. We searched the internet for places having features we wanted and were repeat customers at the ones that satisfied our needs.

Not much closer to you, but maybe for others browsing...Normandy Farms in Foxboro, MA. It's not Disney, but its a pretty great family campground in its own space. It's definitively a "resort." 4 pools (one indoor with adult only hot tubs), bike park, giant dog park, disc golf course, horseshoes, boccie, daily "campy" activities for kids with staff, a pond to fish for perch in, ball fields, etc. Bathrooms as clean as I've seen anywhere. Train to Boston or casino and harness racing track is about 10 mins away. Gillette Stadium (Patriots, New England Revs soccer) and a decent outlet mall 15 mins away.

I'm from the cincinnati area also and the only campground I've found that is close to the fort in atmosphere is Topsail state park in destin. Same foliage and feel, and the beach is very fun, but of course it still can't rival all the fort has to offer. However, it is much, much cheaper at only 42 a night for all dates. About 11 hours from cinti versus the 14 to the fort.

We like to visit Darien Lake Theme Park just outside of Buffalo - park admission is included in stay including the day of departure with free parking. We always get a pull-thru site and the entrance to the park is so close to your campsite. You can also rent RVs there or cabins plus they have a hotel onsite as well. Nightly laser shows are also free.

As far as things to do...Ocean Lakes Campground in Myrtle Beach, SC is a lot of fun. The spots are not as nice as the fort, of course, but they have a couple of water slides, a lazy river, pools, and the beach. They also have planned activities each day for the family. magic shows, luau one night, etc. etc. It is now my second favorite. I don't know if that's any closer to you or not, but we really enjoyed our stay there this summer. Plan on spending more time there next year.

Cherry Hill Park outside of DC is.very nice and you can catch a bus to the Metro to see all of DC.
Frontier Town in OC MD has a nice water park and nice sites along the water. Also very close to the wild ponies

Thanks for the replies. Really looking for more of the campground beauty than anything else, even without the amusement park. Guess it's fort planning for next year. :chat: We have been to frontier town a few years back, definitely was a good time.

Flash it might help to know where you are located so those that live near you can make recommendations. I will suggest you go to the Camping Community Board and check out the Post a Picture at Another Campground thread. I have seen a number of places I would love to check out

If you're looking for non commercialized beauty, you can't beat Elkmont in the Great Smokey Mtns.!! It is beautiful and relaxing right on a river where you can float, wade, swim or just listen to the water over the rocks - and, it's cool in the summer!! We go every year. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge nearby if you need a commercialized 'fix'!! :)

Love Elkmont - We are going to Topsail later this month. I will certainly check out the other campgrounds on the thread. We have recently purchased a travel trailer (big upgrade for us!) and will be doing lots more camping!

Not sure how far this is from Cincinnati, but I love the Lake George RV Park in Lake George NY. (There are other RV parks there, but this is the one I've found to be the nicest.) It's absolutely lovely. Nice sites, several pools, movies, shop and snack stand. They have live entertainment at certain times, too. Plus, Lake George is such a nice place to visit. The campground is away from the lake, but they have trolleys that take you to the village which sits on the lake. We have gone there nearly annually since we first visited.

Also near Lake George is Moose Hillock. Huge sites, super nice pool with slides, family entertainment shows on the weekends, etc.

That's interesting. There is a Moose Hillock campground near our home in New Hampshre - unusual name!

Also in the New England area (not really close to OP but others may be interested):
I second the Normandy Farm suggestion (but frequently books up during popular times over a year in advance)
Resort-like campgrounds; Bailey's in Maine, Point Sebago Maine.
For sheer beauty close to Arcadia National Park in Maine - KOA Oceanside, no frills, but wonderful views, especially if you can snag one of their oceanfront sites.

Same folks! Yours is the original, named for Mount Moosilauke. They bought a partially finished campground in Lake George a few years ago. They finished it, put in a big feature pool, etc. We like both of their locations!

Hmmm, good to know, the NH one is near our 2nd home - Lake George might be tempting.
