Canadian Buffoon's DISmeet vacation - 09/14 - Bowled Over

Whoa... that is a crapton
of studying in one day! :faint:

I studied about 4 craptons this weekend.

Thanks!
Just one question.
You cool it before frosting.
In the fridge until
completely cooled?
Or on the counter for
a little bit?
Or?

I typically cool in the fridge until it is completely cooled for best results, I have been impatient before and it ended up turning into a goop

This is really intriguing.
Looking forward to
trying this.

It's one of my favourites, okay now I will read your post!

I saw Marvin in the antenna! That is a lot of driving in one day. I don't envy you, when I went to visit my family in Edmonton a few years back there was a major snowstorms and accidents and my typically 11 hour drive took 22 hours and that was one of the worst days of my live.

I saw Marvin in the antenna!

Good eye!
Didn't think anyone would
spot that one too easily.

That is a lot of driving in one day.

I was a bit... dizzy
by the end of it.

I don't envy you, when I went to visit my family in Edmonton a few years back there was a major snowstorms and accidents and my typically 11 hour drive took 22 hours and that was one of the worst days of my live.

Ugh!
Nope!
Too much!

But just before we begin...
A big Thank you!
to all of you who
took the time
to post your dessert recipes.
Hope everyone enjoys them!

I had forgotten to do that. I'll try and get one posted as well...if I remember!

Mind you the last time
I sped in the States,
I got out of it.
I suspect it would have been
too much paperwork.

Never underestimate what people will do in order to avoid paperwork.

I did lie quite convincingly
through my teeth, mind you.

"Miles per hour? I don't know.
I have kilometers.
That's divide by decimal six, right?"

Seeing his eyes glaze over
was strangely comforting.

Never underestimate what people will do in order to avoid doing math.

This will be my first
TR that I can say was
very moving.
Brings a tear to my eye.

Oh, great. Is this one of them touchy-feely TR's?

Is this a kissing book?
ya-books-about-first-kisses

A rather dark Monday morning.
2:15am to be precise.

:faint:

I was dressed, packed,
locked and loaded
and out of the house by 3:30am.

Look. You try to get moving
faster than that when you're
constantly distracted by a
nice warm bed calling out to you.

At that hour, I'd be lucky to be able to walk on two legs.

Only people on the road at that
time were fools and idiots.

I'll let you guess which one I was.
No bonus points for saying "both".
I already know too many of you will.

Dang it!

I mean you are completely
at the mercy of a person who
can seize you, your property
and your right to sing "Stayin' Alive".

That last one WOULD be a mercy.

Hmm... come to think of it,
considering my singing prowess...
That'd probably be classified
as a justifiable seizure.

See? Toldja.

(Look. I'm Canadian.
Anyone with a gun is imposing.)

:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Don't give him any reason
to decide that it's never too early
for a cavity search.

It's always too early for a cavity search. Even if it's late.

"Are you constipated? You look like you're constipated."

There it is! :thumbsup2

I could so be a spy.
Except for the whole "danger" part.

Yep. And the "holding up under questioning" part.

I cross into North Dakota.
The flattest land on Earth.
Flat Earthers consider it concave.

:rotfl2::rotfl::lmao:

The song is no longer helping.
More.... hindering.

Disco never helps anything.

North Dakota is flat.

Water is wet. Chernobyl is not a good real estate investment.

I stop at the much larger
metropolis of Fargo
(population 120,762)
for some gas and caffeine.

And bratwurst???:hyper:

I guess it was too early for that.

What defines a cool store name?
Easy. If I think it is.
Simple enough.

Seems legit.

I mean a shirt
from Bob's HD in
Nowheresville might not
get the same consideration
as say... Chicago.

Counterpoint: How many other people have a shirt from Bob's HD in Nowheresville? Probably fewer than Chicago.

I overheard a clerk
mention to a co-worker
"Yes. I get it. The Canadian
dollar is the same as ours."

Obviously, several of my
fellow countrymen and women
had been sharing this "news"
with them, much to their
annoyance.

:rotfl2:I get it, though. I mean, if you wait for something your whole life, the one time it actually happens, you really want to live in the moment.

By the way, did you hear that the Eagles won the Super Bowl?

While I was embarrassed
on behalf of my fellow Canadians,
I'm betting they wouldn't mind
so much now if it got them their
jobs back.

::yes:: Be careful what you wish for.

Hour eleven

Driving.

Exciting TR so far, huh?

Found a cool Homer Simpson sleeping gif to put here and now the image embedding isn't working for me. Sigh.

Guess what!!!!

More driving.

See above comment.

This is gonna be close!
I make it to the front door
of House of Harley Davidson
at one minute to the hour.
and... Yes! Still open.
Although it's obvious
they're getting ready to close.
I snag my last poker chip
of the day and leave so they
can close up.
Pretty sure I hear the <click!>
of the door locking b

Whoa! Nice timing! If you had left at 3:31 a.m....

I have to drive 30 minutes
back the way I came.
And it's all Mark's fault.
@Captain_Oblivious had
recommended a restaurant
here and, well...
I certainly didn't want to
insult him by not going.

Not at all. You've insulted me in so many other ways by now.

This better be good.
That's all I'm sayin'.

Thirty minutes back
the way I came...
grumble, grumble...
Thanks, Mark.

Hey, I didn't plan out this dumb itinerary.

I think I ordered the Roast Pork Loin*
*Winner of the Great Iowa Pork Cook Off.
but I'm not positive.

Oh boy! Must have been an incredible meal if you can't remember what you ordered.

(I always wonder about these "winners".
"So how many places competed?"
"Just us, sir.")

:rotfl2::rotfl2: Often wondered the same thing.

The Shed's World Famous Baked Potato Soup.
I'd never heard of it,
but if they say it's "world famous",
who am I to argue!

coffee_zpsryd4dstp.gif

I thought of that exact same scene when I read it! :rotfl:

Everything was pretty good.
Thanks, Mark!

Whew.

I mean, uh, you're welcome!:thumbsup2 I had the breakfast food there, so I had no idea if dinner was any good or not. Too bad you couldn't get the ginormous cinnamon roll, but there's no way you'd take down that sucker by yourself.

I was too full to even taste them.
You really think I'm going to fill
up on veggies when there's
apple sauce???

::yes:: Truth. Those veggies are getting pushed right to the side.

Hour seventeen

Dude.

Oh. Hey @Captain_Oblivious ,
still think you drive as much
in one day as I do?

You win. :worship::worship:

To be fair, though, I have a wife, a teen, and a toddler in the van with me.

But... the journey
is the destination.

Unless the journey is through North Dakota.

Not one, but two locks
on the garbage chute.
Plus a latch.

These people take their
trash very seriously, people!

"You wanna throw something away?
You're gonna have to get past this first!"

:lmao: Makes you wonder what they found in there that necessitated the locks.

Thanks for sticking around
for the world's most boring update.

I appreciate... uh... hello??

Hello????

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

And... just out of curiosity...
(for anyone (anyone?) still reading)

Did you see it?

I did! Took me a couple of passes. But that ain't no chicken on the weather vane.

I parked the car
and wobbled over
to the restaurant.

Because after 17 hours in a car, one is not able to "sashay"

Did you see it?

No.

Went back. Still no.

Went back again.

Good one!

(Slow morning here)

Nice collection of chips! I thought of you when I was at the Cancun airport and saw the Harley store. Didn't get you a chip though. Other issues that day- no water at the airport, so no working bathroom facilities. YIKES!!!

I really don't like to drive. My husband doesn't like to either. My oldest son got his driver's license at age 18, a year and a half ago, and hasn't driven since. My youngest son is now in the process of getting his license.

I am truly impressed with the story of your journey. My family would never do it.

:worship:

I'm here! I'm here!

I have a reason for my lateness too. I've been in London since the 17th so haven't really been on the Dis. But it's our last day and we're both homesick so I decided to lay in bed and browse. And I found this!

Don't get me wrong, we've enjoyed the trip so far. Just starting to miss little things, like ice in our drinks. And the smell of regular gas (I swear it smells different here). And our California king bed. And free refills. And our dog.

Only people on the road at that
time were fools and idiots.

I'll let you guess which one I was.
I will not get myself in trouble!

(Look. I'm Canadian.
Anyone with a gun is imposing.)
Ahh, my people  I'm with you! Except for the Canadian part...

IMPRESSIVE! ::yes::

Total elapsed time:
Seventeen hours.
Total distance: 900 miles.
:scared1:

No.

Went back. Still no.

Went back again.

Good one!

(Slow morning here)
Still no for me... gonna have to take another peak - guess I'm having a slow morning, too @natebenma

I had forgotten to do that. I'll try and get one posted as well...if I remember!

I'm waaaaiiiiiittttiiiinnnngggg...

Never underestimate what people will do in order to avoid paperwork.

This is a truism.

Never underestimate what people will do in order to avoid doing math.

Wait. Isn't this the second
time you said this?

Nevermind. I'm too lazy
to do the math

Oh, great. Is this one of them touchy-feely TR's?

Is this a kissing book?

Well, I am a little touched, so...

At that hour, I'd be lucky to be able to walk on two legs.

I took my car.

That last one WOULD be a mercy.

::yes::

It's always too early for a cavity search. Even if it's late.

Fair point.

There it is! :thumbsup2

Didn't want to disappoint.

Of course this whole TR is, so...

Yep. And the "holding up under questioning" part.

I'd fold like a cheap suit.

Disco never helps anything.

This is really weird.
When it came out... I hated it.
I was into KISS.

But now?

It reminds me of my youth.
Go figure.

And bratwurst???:hyper:

I guess it was too early for that.

6:30am (ish)
Not open yet.

They should be...
But they weren't.

Counterpoint: How many other people have a shirt from Bob's HD in Nowheresville? Probably fewer than Chicago.

While true...
Then you have to keep
answering all the people
who ask "Where's Nowheresville?"

:rotfl2:I get it, though. I mean, if you wait for something your whole life, the one time it actually happens, you really want to live in the moment.

By the way, did you hear that the Eagles won the Super Bowl?

What's this about the Eagles?

Found a cool Homer Simpson sleeping gif to put here and now the image embedding isn't working for me. Sigh.

It's not that it's not working.
It's that it's too bored to post.

Whoa! Nice timing! If you had left at 3:31 a.m....

I plan these things
very carefully.

Not at all. You've insulted me in so many other ways by now.

Not to worry.
I have more ways.

Hey, I didn't plan out this dumb itinerary.

Still blaming you, though.

You don't think I'm going
to blame myself, do you???

Oh boy! Must have been an incredible meal if you can't remember what you ordered.

Honest, it was good.
Not Drooling Homer good...
But good.

But... I'm just not positive
what the main was.

Call it... 90%.

Whew.

I mean, uh, you're welcome!:thumbsup2 I had the breakfast food there, so I had no idea if dinner was any good or not. Too bad you couldn't get the ginormous cinnamon roll, but there's no way you'd take down that sucker by yourself.

Shoot. Forgot that part.
Should've got one to go.
I could've snacked on it
for the next few days.

::yes:: Truth. Those veggies are getting pushed right to the side.

Nice that they put it in
a little, easily shoved, bowl.

You win. :worship::worship:

To be fair, though, I have a wife, a teen, and a toddler in the van with me.

Hmm...
Have to do the math on that one.

I avoid that.

Unless the journey is through North Dakota.

Well.... yes.
That's true.

:lmao: Makes you wonder what they found in there that necessitated the locks.

 Good point!

I did! Took me a couple of passes. But that ain't no chicken on the weather vane.

::yes::

Impressive. Especially for one day.

You think so?
I did, on that day,
but when I put
them out like that,
I kinda felt...

"That's it?"

May have to try that restaurant on our next trip north, it’s about an hour and a half from us. Hmm mini road trip?

I might go there again, myself. :)

Although the cinnamon roll mentioned by @Captain_Oblivious sounds tempting as well. Breakfast or dinner, such decisions.

Both! Do both!

Because after 17 hours in a car, one is not able to "sashay"

Sashay?
I was having enough
trouble staying vertical!

No.

Went back. Still no.

Went back again.

Good one!

(Slow morning here)

Not an easy one to find, is it?

Nice collection of chips! I thought of you when I was at the Cancun airport and saw the Harley store. Didn't get you a chip though.

Well.... while I really
appreciate the thought...

I only collect from places
I've been to myself.

That way when someone points
to the jar and says:
"Did you go to all of those yourself?"

I can honestly say "Yes."

Other issues that day- no water at the airport, so no working bathroom facilities. YIKES!!!

Okay.... that's really not good!

I really don't like to drive. My husband doesn't like to either. My oldest son got his driver's license at age 18, a year and a half ago, and hasn't driven since.

So... road trips not your thing.

My youngest son is now in the process of getting his license.

Why?

:rolleyes1

Wait! Maybe he'll be the one!

I am truly impressed with the story of your journey. My family would never do it.

:worship:

Well, actually....

I probably shouldn't
have done it either. ;)

I'm here! I'm here!

Annie!!!!!

Hi!

:welcome: to the TR!!

I have a reason for my lateness too. I've been in London since the 17th so haven't really been on the Dis. But it's our last day and we're both homesick so I decided to lay in bed and browse. And I found this!

I saw some posts on fb,
(you know I'm not on there lots)
so knew you were there.

So exciting!

Don't get me wrong, we've enjoyed the trip so far. Just starting to miss little things, like ice in our drinks.

I can see that.
Fun to travel, but...
Culture shock is a real thing.

And the smell of regular gas (I swear it smells different here).

They use more diesel there,
don't they?

Maybe different additives?

And our California king bed. And free refills. And our dog.

I see where your priorities are.

You put the poor pup last!

I will not get myself in trouble!

We'll see if you're
the only one.

:)

Ahh, my people  I'm with you! Except for the Canadian part...

But that's the best part!

IMPRESSIVE! ::yes::

You think so?
Okay, phew!

I looked at the pile
and thought "That's it?"

It felt like a lot at the time.

Not long enough?

Still no for me... gonna have to take another peak - guess I'm having a slow morning, too @natebenma

It's there. Promise.

We should have met up! We live 15 minutes from that going-downhill-outlet mall in Albertville! My daughter takes dance across the street! Small World!

Ok, I'm going with the group that says that's an impressive pile of HD chips for one day! (Not to mention, an impressive amount of driving) :scared:

We should have met up! We live 15 minutes from that going-downhill-outlet mall in Albertville!

Well, shoot!
But it's not too late.

Very good chance I'll head that way again
in the not too distant future. :)

My daughter takes dance across the street! Small World!

Ah....
I remember those days.
Elle (almost 21) took dance
from the time she was 2.

Ballet? Tap? Jazz?
All the above?

Ok, I'm going with the group that says that's an impressive pile of HD chips for one day!

Well... okay!

It really felt like a lot
at the time.

And if everyone thinks so...

I'll go along with that! :)

(Not to mention, an impressive amount of driving) :scared:

I didn't drive quite as far the next day.
But I did make some fun stops.

;)

Time to get this TR started.

Yeah, I like to start mine around pg. 6 too. ;)

I figured a road trip
might offer some opportunities
to increase my collection

Or a good case of constipation.

Despite the early hour,
I had no trouble staying awake
(Stayin' awake, stayin' awake
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' awake, stayin' awake
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaake!!!)

Bee Gees for the win!!!!

That plus excitement
to start a new trip
is better than caffeine.

Wrong.

Nothing can make you look more pasty
than a passport photo.

Oregon Winter? :confused3

Zylstra HD

I like the way that one rolls off the tongue.

Impressive.

Not busy, so no wait.

Which was a good thing.
If a little unnerving.
I usually say you can
gauge a good restaurant
by how busy it is.

I read the first sentence, and thought the EXACT same thing you followed up with. The best food is often found in the worst dives.

Looks pretty much like a Cracker Barrel.

You can drive that in
considerably less time
(Fourteen and a half hours)
if you don't stop
to eat or buy poker chips.

Of fly. And have the chips sent. But that, I suppose would defeat the purpose of the hunt.
