Cheating on DCL to go on RCCL Enchantment of the Seas

So we've been on DCL twice before and loved it. Would love to go again. But in looking for cruises for next year, DCL is literally twice as expensive as RCL (same week, same itinerary except private RCL island as opposed to private DCL island).

So....I feel somewhat dirty for cheating on Disney, but I'm looking forward to seeing if the extra money is worth it (or not!). My kids will be 5 and 9 at the time of the sailing. Anyone done the 4-day Enchantment cruise from Port Canaveral that goes to Nassau and the private island?

I have not done that particular cruise, but we have been in Enchantment. We had the same issue when we decided to do DCL this summer, after having done 4 RCCL cruises. I didn't think it would be worth the money, but we thought we would give DCL a try. We loved it and can't wait to go back, even though it was about twice as much. With DS8, I wouldn't think twice about DCL again. If it were just DH and I, it would be a tough choice. Everything, dining, entertainment, kids club, activities, are more geared for kids. RCCL Voyager kids club was good, but it's 1/3 or less the size of what was on Fantasy. MDR is so much better on DCL for kids too.

Try it though. You'll never know until you go. You will still have a great time.

I'll let you know in a couple of weeks. DH and I are taking this very cruise on the 15th.

We are doing this cruise on January 12th. :)

I do know that Royal struggles to tender to CocoCay if there is a lot of wind. Hubby did Enchantment last April and got in fine and he LOVED CocoCay.

Great! I can't wait to hear what you have to say about it? And have you sailed on Disney, too?

Yes, we sailed on the Fantasy in 2012. Loved it, but our then tween didn't like the kid's program. When we sailed, it seemed that most of the activities for her age group were late into the night (like 1am). She is not a night owl :).

Probably would have been different when she was younger but I can tell you when she was little we went on 2 RC cruises and we never saw her. She was having too much fun with the program!

I know the feeling. We (family of 4, kids are 12 & 9) were originally booked to go on the Fantasy next August (we booked while on the Fantasy this past August). However, we later switched it to the Freedom of the Seas sailing one week later - both are out of Port Canaveral and the exact same Western itinerary, just subbing for each line's private island (Castaway / Labadee). We also added 5 nights in WDW at the Beach Club prior to the cruise. The total for the 5 nights in WDW (in a deluxe resort plus 5-day tix) and the Freedom of the Seas cruise is still less than the Fantasy cruise alone.

We've cruised RCCL before - Oasis of the Seas in 2013, and Freedom of the Seas in 2009 (which was actually a special "Nickelodeon Family Cruise"). So we know what to expect with them. We absolutely love DCL (if they only had a casino, they would be perfect IMO), but it's getting harder and harder to justify the pricetag. I just shake my head sometimes on the DCL boards when people try to claim that there really isn't much of a difference in prices between DCL and the other lines - particularly RCCL. I love Disney, but still look at things objectively. So many people on these boards are just unabashed Disney apologists/loyalists.

Well, put it this way...for $1700 we got 2 connecting oceanview staterooms for the 4-night cruise. On Disney, it was $3450 for 2 connecting interiors for the same cruise. :rolleyes1

So, I'm happy to gamble this time with the price savings!

We did the 4 night Enchantment a few months ago. It definitely was great for what we paid. We originally booked two connecting ocean view staterooms, but upgraded with a kids sail free promotion to a Royal Family Suite, which was amazing. We had a HUGE corner aft balcony, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a living room for half as much as it would have cost for two inside cabins on the Dream! That said though, overall, my kids (15, 12, 8) and I preferred Disney, but I wouldn't hesitate to sail Royal again if the price was right.

RCCL now has the "Dreamworks Experience" (primarily featuring the characters from Shrek and Madagascar) on many of it's ships and I was pretty impressed with it on the Liberty of the Seas. Granted, I've never sailed DCL but I thought the character interaction (meet & greets, parades, character meals) were VERY similar in quality to what I've experienced at the Disney parks. It would be great if they expanded this feature to the Enchantment out of PC - it would bring a whole new level of competition against DCL for those short, "add to a theme park vacation" cruises.

Ok, we got home last night after our 4 night cruise on the Enchantment.
First, we did have a very good time. The crew members were wonderful. Our waiters were Sanjay and Mylene and they were great! Our stateroom attendant, Sydney, was hilarious. That being said, if you have cruised before you may find yourself a little disappointed.

The ship is very old but in good shape and kept very clean. It's the smallest ship we have been on and took no time at all to get from one end to the other.
I'll start with the food. The food in the main dining room wasn't bad, but it also wasn't very good. It was just meh. Not a whole lot of taste. The first night was the thinnest slice of prime rib I've ever seen but it had no seasoning whatsoever. Other nights included beef tenderloin (very tender), duck, turkey and shrimp. Portions were small but no big deal, you can get as much as you want.

For the first time, I could not find anything appetizing at the Windjammer buffet. They had a pretty sizable selection but nothing that looked appetizing, just personal opinion. A lot of the meats were dry and vegetables were mushy and seemed to have been overcooked.

They were running spa specials all week. My husband and I decided to splurge and purchased the Spatopia special. Head, neck, shoulder, ankle foot massage. Hot rock massage, facial and full body exfoliation. We got this in the evening thinking it would relax us for a great night's sleep. WRONG. After being rubbed raw by the exfoliation (this may be typical but my first one) I felt like I had been assaulted. I left barely being able to touch my left shoulder blade and my husband had visible bruises on both shoulders, no sleep for us. Beware, those little spa ladies pack a big punch. You will also be subjected to a big sales pitch at the end for their products.

Excursions..the first stop was Nassau in the Bahamas. We were in port for nearly 24 hours. I had read just prior to the cruise that Nassau was the most dangerous cruise port in the world so I didn't have the warm fuzzies from the start. Then our waiter leaned in the night before and cautioned us to stay close because there were a lot of bad people. There was a warning in our Cruise Compass that the US Embassy has issued a safety warning for tourists to be on high alert. Yea! We did the harbor tour and glass bottom boat excursion. The harbor tour was lovely. We saw lots of celebrity homes belonging to Nicolas Cage, JK Rowling, Chuck Norris, Oprah, Sean Connery as well as the Atlantis resort. The glass bottom boat was nice but we did a semi submersible tour in the Grand Caymans a few years ago that was much better. Then we walked around the Straw Market, had lunch at Senor Frogs and went back the the ship.

The following day was Coco Cay. The weather was gorgeous, mid 70's light breeze and plenty of sun. I sat my happy butt in the sun while DH did a snorkeling/treasure hunt. They had hidden gold coins (painted wooden discs) around in the water. He found one, turned it in and spun the wheel. He won a 1 hour jet ski tour. He was one happy camper.

The entertainment was okay. Hubby joked that we got the B crew. The 2 bands on board were actually pretty bad, butchered a lot of good music. They had the usual trivia, bingo, etc. Spent a little time in the casino.

I think that's it, sorry it's so long, I've never done this before. If anyone has any questions, I'll be happy to answer what I can. Again, we did have a very nice time and wouldn't hesitate to cruise Royal Carribbean again.

Enchantment is unfortunately older. I went on my honeymoon on it, and it was on its second year of service. I've been married over 15 years. I think the newer ships are probably nicer. We went on Voyager, a newer ship, out of Galveston in 2010. It wasn't bad, especially for the price. However, it would be unfair to compare it to Fantasy or Dream.

My son and I did the Enchantment 3nt this past July after many Disney cruises. For tweens/teens, their program is nearly non-existent. My son loves the Edge/Vibe on Disney but didn't even go on the Enchantment because it was rarely open and/or no one was there. Buffet food wasn't great. Seemed in general to be a lower end experience than Disney. But if you can get a great price, I think it's worth it just to spend a day at CocoCay, although their island isn't nearly as nice and well kept as Disney's. But still, the beautiful turquoise water is the same.

I like RCCL very well, but I would not take my child on enchantment. I would only do freedom class or bigger because those are ships with dream works stuff and lots of kids activities, ice shows, great kids pool area, etc.

To us enchantment is for older folks who want a relaxing cruise. While we prefer DCCL with DS, we had a great time on Allure of the Seas as well.

I have to agree. DH and I took our second cruise on Enchantment (our first was on Disney Wonder) It was a different itinerary. We had a great time, however decided as much as we liked RCCL that Enchantment was not a family ship. When we got home we booked a cruise with the kids on Independence. We all loved it.

If they had a differant ship doing the 3 and 4 night out of Port Canaveral we would have tried it by now.

We looked at Disney Fantasy vs Royal Allure and found a $2000 difference for similar cruise, cabin, etc. We went with Allure as it is also super kid friendly. If your kids are young then perhaps check out a Royal ship with DreamWorks experience (not sure if the one you mentioned has it or not). These are definitely family friendly ships.
