Child is sick too often! (update post 214)

An updates? I hope they figured out what's wrong and she's feeling better.

Right now they are saying ti si acute reactive arthritis that was probably triggered by a virus, but they still are not ruling out undetected bacterial infection. Response to antibiotics means that it could still be acute infection. So they are keeping her until Sunday to monitor to see if pain returns. She seems back to normal now! We get the latest blood work today to see what the white blood count is, but last time it had gone down from 24 to 14. Thank God and thank you guys so much for your support. I know my anxiety over my kid's health is very high and I'm trying to manage that.

When you see your family is healthy, especially your kids, you realize you really do have it all. Nothing, and I mean nothing else matters.

I'm glad you trusted your instincts and went in for more care. Honestly, the whole "it's a virus" thing is all well and good when the symptoms are manageable, but the level of pain you said she had in her hips was NOT normal, and I wouldn't have been satisfied with "it's a virus" either!

My son had a similar hip issue after a virus (although we KNEW he had had a virus)...he had a bad cold one year and got better. A few days later, his right hip hurt so badly he was limping. He was only 6 at the time, and I thought he had injured himself somehow. We ended up taking him to his pediatrician who ordered an immediate x ray. He had fluid in his hip joint from the virus, not enough to drain though. I had never heard of that before! He was put on NSAIDs and rest for two days and it resolved in about 5 days.

Hope your daughter gets better soon!

I don't want to freak out the OP, but viruses can cause all kinds of crazy symptoms. I had a virus for about 18 months that caused symptoms in every in system in my body. Some were serious enough to require surgery.

For the most part though I muscled through and led my life going to work, volunteer stuff and taking care of my family.

As frustrating as it is there isn't much you can do for a virus except treat the symptoms.

Best wishes for your daughter. Glad to see she is in good care with a great mother!

That sounds like my daughter's case but in both hips. The ambulance nurse (they took us from ER by ambulance to a different hospital to be near a ped ICU just in case because they thought she might be developing sepsis) said hips are often effected by viral infections. He sounded unfazed. They have my daughter on motrin regularly and off antibiotics to see if it was in fact viral caused hip inflammation. I don't care what it is as long as it goes away and never returns.

Me, too but I'm still wondering if they have taken in consideration the bacterial/virus situation she had in September. It's kind of scary she's going thru a lot of things again only 6 months later. I'd be concerned with that.

I did mention that to a few of the doctors (she has so many doctors and specialists on the case) and with the blood work they are not alarmed about something serious since it came out normal.

100% Yes!
I'm so glad you're getting some answers, and they're keeping her, and she's starting to feel better.

When my daughter was a toddler, she got sick with something the doctor said was viral, then a few days after her fever broke she suddenly couldn't walk. She would try to stand and kept falling over. Took her back to the doctor and found out that it's not that uncommon for a virus to "settle in the joints" (to use a common, unscientific explanation) and cause those symptoms. My son has gotten the Strep rash, where a strep throat infection manifests itself as a skin rash. He had no other symptoms except this inexplicable rash--no sore throat, no fever. Biology is weird. I'm glad your daughter is getting the treatment she needs, op. Good parenting instincts!

So what was the final diagnosis? Joint inflammation from the virus? Bacterial infection that the IV antibiotics took care of? Is she still on antibiotics or anti inflammatory meds?

They think it was a virus that could have caused Toxic synovitis (also known as transient synovitis) is a common cause of hip painand limping in children. Doctors don't know its exact cause, but some kids develop it after having a viral infection.

or

a potentially undetected bacterial infection but they don't believe so because it would have lingered after two days of iv antibiotics, and it wasn't detected in the culture.

There was fluid in the hips, indicated by the MRI, but not enough to worry about. High inflammation markers, too.

Often they just don't know, but she did have the beginning of sepsis (markers at least) which caused them to send her to a hospital with a PICU just in case she needed it.

I'm so worried she is going to get sick again. But I have to remind myself that her blood work was perfect before she left, so no more infection.

I'm glad she is feeling better. As a nurse, that is what I was concerned about. If it was bacterial, I was afraid she might not have gotten enough antibiotics to knock it out completley. But it sounds like it was viral all along with the synovitis as a complication. Which the round the clock Motrin helped resolve, correct?

I can understand the worry that she will get sick again. The thing is, she may indeed be susceptible to getting sick for awhile. Her immune system is stressed & her defenses are low after being sick twice in the last month. Make sure she is getting lots of sleep, eating a good diet & washing her hands like crazy to stay healthy. And hope for an end to this looooong winter! :rolleyes2
