DAY FIVE

Our bags were supposed to be ready at 8am but we got a knock on our door at 7:45am asking if our bags were ready. We rushed to get our toiletries into our bags and handed them over. Had a leisurely breakfast this time they had small donuts and donut holes filled with jelly and they were yummy. We were on the bus just after 9am and heading to the town of Kassel to see Lions Lowenburg castle. The drive to Kassel was about 1hr 45min.

We stopped at the top of a beautiful park to see a Hercules monument. It would have been a wonderful view but it was raining quite hard so we were unable to get very good pictures of the view or the monument. When we got back on the bus Kim and Nadine passed out postcards of the park and Hercules monument since we had been unable to take very good pictures at the site.

Just a few minutes drive and we were at Lowenburg castle. As we walked up to the castle we were greeted by a German princess.

The kids went with the princess and our two ABD guides and we toured with local guide, Uhlri (not sure about the spelling of her name). This castle was really a palace (we were instructed on the differences of castles and palaces) built in the early 1800s as a way to show importance and wealth. Lowenburg castle was specifically designed to look like a medieval castle circa 1495. The design was so precise that the church was built in Catholic style even though Wilhelm IX was Protestant. In 1495 the reformation had not begun so there wouldnt have been a Protestant church. We were only allowed to take pictures of the outside.

We had lunch at Restaurant Gutshof.

There were 3 options for lunch - wienershnitzel, gnocchi and a 3rd I can't remember. I think almost everyone tried the wienerschnitzel and it was really good. For starters there was a potato soup w/sour cream, bacon tart or side salad. Alcoholic drinks were not included.

The next drive was our longest - 3.5 hours. After 2 hours we stopped at a nicely appointed rest stop. DD had been introduced to the Kinder Egg Surprise by Nadine. Each egg contains chocolate and a toy. While at the rest stop we found Kinder Eggs and got a couple.

We arrived in Rothenburg and Hotel Eisenhut around 5pm. This hotel is built from 4 historic homes, 3 on one side of the street and 1 on the other side of the street. All of the ABD rooms were on the side of the street with the 3 historic homes. Our room has a balcony and another beautiful view. The rooms have an actual key to the door rather than a key card so we were encouraged to leave the key at the front desk so we wouldn't have to carry it around as it was big and bulky. All of the rooms are different and the hotel itself is very unique. As you can see below, our room did not have a shower, just a large spa bathtub with a hand held shower wand. It was interesting.

Tonight was dinner on our own. The guides gave some suggestions for dinner but DD and I decided to walk around the town and try some snacks instead. The city is known for Schneeballen (snowballs) so we tried a nearby shop but they had just closed for the evening. We shopped around and checked out this picturesque town.

At 8:30pm we met up for our tour with the night watchman. Our watchman was named Harry. He let the junior adventurers hold the lamp and we walked throughout the city. He had lots interesting stories to tell. We ended up just outside the city walls to take in the city view. By the time we got back to the hotel it was about 10pm and we were ready for bed.
