How close to date can you still book?

We are taking an unplanned very budget trip for DH's birthday in October. I was thinking of renting a one night stay at AKL as a surprise for him since it is his dream resort. I know he wants a savannah view. I think I can come up with the money without him noticing (I don't work) but it will take a few months for me to gather it. I would be renting through Dave's DVC.

How close to my preferred date can I realistically book and still get it?

October is a very busy month. One time I called mid September for 1 night in mid October and there was nothing, any resort.

DH and I are trying to decide if we are going to do a very short food and wine weekend in October. We own at AKV and I started checking 2 weeks ago. Availability is very limited already. If you want DVC in October, it really needs to be booked at 7 months.

If you were a DVC member, you could reasonably call the same morning and find a one day reservation somewhere at WDW. But, you are not a member and would be needing to rent points. I doubt any member thinking correctly would book anything for you without full payment just to attempt to make the reservation for 30 days or less out from the reservation date. And it would have to be anything available, not just a specific resort/villa type.

Renting points for a one night last-minute stay is not really feasible. David's usually requires a minimum number of points for their rentals, I believe - I see that on the e-mail notices he sends out - aside from the availability difficulties and logistical difficulties mentioned already.

worm761, unless he has his heart set on a villa, you could just rent a room at the lodge through Disney. Perhaps there will be some discounts coming up for that time and you could book closer to your stay date. We stayed in a Savannah view regular room at the Lodge a few years ago and it was lovely. Good luck with whatever you decide.
