If It Sinks, We Drinks: Spring 2018 Dining Report *Complete 7/29 Les Halles & Via Napoli

The was a Photopass opportunity just outside Yak & Yeti and Asher had a lengthy photo shoot. The photographer was a great sport and his poses were hilarious.

photo shoot.jpg wilderness explorer (1).jpg

By the time we finished lunch it was past naptime so we booked it out of there to get Asher back to our room for some rest. On our way out, we overheard a conversation between two CMs coming in to work and picked up a new quote that we will use repeatedly for years to come: “She is alvays grumpy and does never smiles!” You have to say it with a thick German accent to get the full effect.

Back at the room, Asher was out quickly and I was out the door right after as I had big plans for some solo Epcot time.

It was so nice to have a leisurely stroll over without rushing to get anywhere or worrying about anyone else’s entertainment, thinking about it makes me look forward to my solo trip even more. My first stop of the afternoon was L’Artisan des Glaces for this fun little treat:

macaron.JPG

I went with the seasonal macaron sandwich, which had a blend of strawberry sorbet and vanilla ice cream inside a strawberry macaron. I loved this and thought it was a perfect small and lightly sweet treat. I’m a sucker for strawberry flavored desserts.

In keeping with the pink theme, I went for this next:

watermelon slushy.JPG

Watermelon Cucumber Slushy with Tamiami Florida Gin – $11.75

I was on gin kick and I loved this drink. The flavors were great together, I just wish it were bigger as the price was pretty steep for a thimble sized drink. They should sell this in a full size somewhere.

I sat and people-watched while enjoying my drink and observed that there were large groups of grown-up cheerleaders drinking around the world. Otherwise World Showcase was gloriously empty and I hoped they wouldn’t get too rowdy and ruin the peaceful atmosphere. I saw security talking to a couple of the groups, but I didn’t personally witness any super obnoxious behavior and they all disappeared to party somewhere else early in the evening.

Next I tried a beer:

orange hibiscus.JPG

Central 28 Brewing Company Sunshine Greetings Orange Hibiscus Wheat Ale -- $4.25

For a beer with such a ridiculously long name, this didn’t have much flavor and didn’t appeal to me. I reluctantly finished it anyway.

I decided I wanted a nice glass of wine to wash away the yucky beer and headed over to Germany. After waiting for some French cheerleaders to down shots I asked for a dry white wine and I think it ended up being a dry Riesling, but I don’t remember. The CMs were unpleasant in the wine shop and I got out of there quickly.

german wine.JPG

I picked up a hat that Chad wanted and then started walking back toward the IG since I figured Asher would wake up soon. The boys met me in England and Asher hugged and kissed me repeatedly as though we hadn’t seen each other in days.

We looked on MDE for a dinner ADR and pickings were slim, presumably because the restaurants weren’t fully staffed since it was not busy at all that evening. I thought we should try to get to Biergarten this trip so Asher could see the band and that’s what we ended up booking even though we weren’t really feeling it.

We strolled slowly around WS toward Germany, stopping at our last remaining scavenger hunt spots and a couple of booths along the way. I tried another beer at Florida Fresh.

quat ale.JPG

Tampa Bay Brewing Company Quat Seasonal Fruit Ale -- $4.25

I enjoyed this much more than the wheat ale from earlier, the kumquat flavor was fun.

We had been wanting to try the burnt ends has from the Smokehouse and picked up one to share.

burnt ends hash.JPG

Beef Brisket Burnt Ends Hash with White Cheddar Fondue and Pickled Jalapeños – $6.50

This was just okay, a bit of a disappointment as the whole thing seemed kind of soggy. Maybe just an off night as there was nobody in line at any of the booths and the food was probably sitting under lamps for awhile.

We checked into Biergarten and had a bit of a wait for our table. We presumed we would be seated with the family that had some kids running around like crazy which was cause for some apprehension. It’s always a gamble here.

We were finally seated by another grumpy CM and one of the kids was still being rowdy. Chad and I gave each other wide-eyes and took deep breaths.

Chad ordered a giant Warsteiner and I had a nice glass of Villa Wolf Pinot Gris. I don’t have photos of the drinks but it doesn’t matter because the few photos I took are terrible quality due to the lighting and my old iPhone.

My first plate consisted of salads:

salad plate.JPG

We’ve always enjoyed the salads here and they were mostly as we remembered with a nice assortment to choose from. While we started on our salad plates, Asher was concerned that the matriarch of our tablemates wasn’t in her seat and he kept asking, “Where’s Granny?” They became fast friends when she returned and we ended up enjoying talking to our new friends immensely (the boy had chilled by this point). They were a mom, three kids, and a grandma from NYC and chatting with them was the best part of the dinner for us.

At some point the band performed their last set, which seemed short and was a bit of a let-down. We were in the last seating group of the night and all the CMs seemed on the grumpy side, I guess they were just having that kind of day in Germany. It wasn’t as festive as our past experiences.

We got ourselves some hot foods:

main plate.JPG

I can’t even tell what that plate consists of, but I wasn’t impressed with any of it. The flavors were duller than I remember and the ingredient quality just wasn’t great. It all just kinda fell flat. I’m so glad that Asher’s meal was free because all he ate was a wiener, some bratwurst, and yellow mustard.

Chad felt the same way about the food, it just wasn’t as good as we’ve had in the past. We would have been better off just visiting more booths and enjoying the low crowds in WS, hindsight ya know. We won’t be returning to Biergarten for awhile after this lackluster experience.

We nibbled on some desserts that were just okay and then it was time to say goodbye to our new friends and head out. We had missed Illuminations and the post-show music was playing which inspired Asher to perform interpretive dances the entire walk from Germany to the IG. I’m so glad he gets it, only someone who really loves Epcot would do that, I’m pretty sure I’ve done it myself a time or two.

It was an evening EMH night and I would have loved to stay longer, but alas it was time to get the boy to bed. We had to pack the next morning and wanted to do so early enough that we could finish up our to-do list at Epcot.

Next up is our last day. :sad1:

Oh gurrrl, you and I have the same taste in drinks I think :) Kings Estate Pinot Gris is one of my favorites and almost every drink you ordered I've had my eye on (Pink Himalayan FOR SHO). I am also dying for the CG brunch! I just don't know if I can cram it in my trip.

I've also been empathizing majorly with Asher and remembering how much work my wild man was at that age. So busy. Literally non-stop 24/7 until they just konk out! Rowan is still A LOT of work, but I promise it gets easier!! I'm looking forward to a less labor intensive trip in January as he'll be almost 6 (!) and we'll be sans strollers, diaper bags, etc.

Can't wait for more :)

Hi, I am loving this. Can't wait to go back, you're whetting my appetite---oh how I love "the World"!!! Thank you for a great read and photos, such a fun report :thanks:
And Asher is adorable!

The scallop dish from the booth looks amazing as does the honey dessert. I wish they would have that at the F&W festival this year.

We are getting a Landry's card to use just for Yak & Yeti. It's not my favorite place, but my husband really likes it so it will be a nice break from the heat.

Sorry about Biergarten. I've only eaten there once and didn't feel like it was great. All I wanted was the potato and leek soup with pretzel rolls so I stood in line on the right side and they ran out. Went over to the left and by the time I got there, they were out again. I don't know--I'm just not feeling it as far as buffets go.

As soon as the tarps went up, I was doing this. First customer of the day! :drinking1

#SoProud

bloody-mary-jpg.338702

African Bloody Mary
Snow Leopard Vodka, Loaded Bloody Mary Mix, and Spicy African Berbere Sauce, garnished with Candied Bacon, Celery Stalk and Carrot -- $10.75
You so have me wanting one of these. Its been ages since I've gotten one.

yak-drinks-jpg.338710

Pink Himalayan

Tanqueray Gin, Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice, Passion Fruit and Lemon Grass Flavors, Salt Rim -- $10.00
Can I just say I love the way you Disney. Vodka for breakfast + Gin for Lunch = My kinda day

I’ve been trying to avoid tuna because of the mercury content, but this was absolutely worth the risk. We easily devoured this and loved every bite. Highly recommend.
One of my favorites!!!! These will most definitely be on my must eat list next month.

dim-sum-jpg.338704

Dim Sum Basket
Pork pot stickers, shrimp siu mai, cha su bao and pork siu mai steamed on a banana leaf, soy lime dipping sauce -- $15.99
Nachos for Apps and Dim Sum for an entree sounds like perfection. Even if it is cold.

rum-drink-jpg.338709

Our server warned me that this was very strong and I was like “Awesome!” :thumbsup2 She was right, it was very strong and would made a nice after dinner drink.
I'm not sure apricot would be up my alley but I'm all over strong :P

She is alvays grumpy and does never smiles!” You have to say it with a thick German accent to get the full effect.

watermelon-slushy-jpg.338722

Watermelon Cucumber Slushy with Tamiami Florida Gin – $11.75
That looks and sounds awesome, but way, way, way too tiny for $12. That is highway robbery.

For a beer with such a ridiculously long name, this didn’t have much flavor and didn’t appeal to me. I reluctantly finished it anyway.

This was just okay, a bit of a disappointment as the whole
This must have been an off night as we always loved this on previous visits.

We were in the last seating group of the night and all the CMs seemed on the grumpy side, I guess they were just having that kind of day in Germany. It wasn’t as festive as our past experiences.
Remember: She is alvays grumpy and does never smiles! :P

Yikes! Sounds like the dark picture wasn't just a euphemism. Sorry it wasn't better but glad to hear you had some good company.

It was a lot of work this trip, I didn't get into most of it, but we had our challenges. In some ways it was easier than the last trip when he was 2 and in diapers, but more difficult in other ways. Mostly the bathroom stuff and getting him out the door, which continues to be an issue at home. He's a total threenager right now. :headache::rolleyes2

I had the same problem at Biergarten, it didn't seem like the food was being refilled quickly enough for the number of people still dining. It was late, but still...:confused3

Remember: She is alvays grumpy and does never smiles! :P

I almost titled this day in reference to German grumpiness since that was the theme of the day, but it may have seemed offensive if taken out of context I think. :worried:

Day 9 – May 2
The End of Our Jolly Holiday

Alright, I’ve got my second giant cup of tea in my Epcot 35 mug, my photos are edited, and I’m determined to get this report finished before lunch today. Let’s get on with it!

On our departure morning *sigh*, Chad and I packed up our things while Asher had a leisurely breakfast. We made good time, had bell services pick up our luggage to store, and were on our way over to Epcot around 10 am to finish up some things on our to-do list. While we strolled, I had the last bit of rose from our fridge in a plastic wine glass that I’d had the forethought to save the previous day. It was a nice way to start the morning!

Our first stop was Les Halles for some coffee and pastries. I’ve always wanted to go there first thing in the morning, but when we enter in Future World, it never makes sense to trek all the way back to France. I’m glad we finally were able to do this because the bakery was gloriously quiet and peaceful in the morning.

We started out with savory pastries (sorry, some bites are missing):

savory pastries.JPG
Roulé Lard and Fromage

Bacon and Cheese Roll --$3.95
Croissant Jambon Fromage
Ham, Cheese and Béchamel in a Croissant --$4.75

The bacon and cheese roll was right up my alley, can’t really go wrong with bacon and cheese. I shared with Asher and he enjoyed it as well. Chad’s croissant had egg on it since it was still breakfast time and he had the cheese removed. They gave us the slice and Asher snacked on it. I had a cappuccino and Chad had a black coffee, which he deemed the best coffee of the trip, even better than the press pot at the CG brunch.

I also picked up one of these:

frangipane.JPG
Frangipane

Almond filling between Puff Pastry --$3.70

I decided to save this since we had a lunch ADR at 12:30 and I needed to save room for more carbs. We ended up scarfing it down in the car on our drive later in the day and it was wonderful. Very simple, yet satisfying.

After our pastries and coffee, we had some chores to do: pickup up passholder magnets, buy F&G ornament, and pick up prize for completing scavenger hunt. By the time we did all that we needed to start making our way back around WS for our lunch ADR at Via Napoli.

We checked in and were seated quickly. It was early enough that the place was still fairly empty and quiet. We had a great spot on one of the banquette tables at the back, next to the server’s drink station. Usually I wouldn’t like being next to a server station, but I’ve noticed that at Disney restaurants, the servers seem to make more of an effort to be quiet and professional in these areas. It also meant our drinks and food came out quickly and we were checked on frequently.

We had a CM in training with a supervisor and therefore had incredible service. We ordered sangria and it was suggested that if we would be having more than one glass, we should get a pitcher. Well, of course! I like their white sangria, it’s refreshing and just boozy enough to have a couple of glasses.

Asher was a little antsy and some pre-lunch entertainment was required:

lunch entertainment.JPG

He gobbled this up when it came out though:

fruit cup.JPG
Fruit Cocktail --$6.00

This was a nice size and had fresh pieces of Asher’s favorites. He polished it off.

I knew what I was getting and Chad was looking for the items he had last trip on the menu when we noticed the menu was much smaller with very few options in appetizers, soups, and salads. Our server then informed us that it was their temporary menu during the renovation, which we weren’t aware of. It wasn’t a big deal for me at all since I was getting pizza, but it severely limited Chad’s options that were dairy-free.

He started with a pasta fagioli soup:

bean soup.JPG
He said it was good and like a more upscale Campbell’s Bean with Bacon soup. This is a positive review from him because he really likes bean with bacon.

The only other item on the menu that would work for him was a seafood salad. Our server actually discouraged him from ordering it, saying it was very small, but since Chad was so limited, he went with it despite the recommendation.

seafood salad.JPG

This was a pretty big miss, it was VERY small and the price was $25!!! So not worth it. We were warned though. Chad also said it was just boring and had no flavor. I felt bad that he had an unsatisfying lunch, but he was a good sport about it.

I, of course, had to have the pizza I’ve been dreaming about since last September:

carciofi (1).JPG
Carciofi Pizza - Individual
white pizza - artichoke, fontina, mozzarella, truffle oil --$22.00

I added arugula again and it was just as wonderful as I remembered. I think Asher ate one piece and I almost polished off the rest. I did have one slice left which I packaged up to go because there was no way I was wasting that pizza!

It was another great experience at Via Napoli, not counting Chad’s salad mishap. The place had filled up and was getting loud by the time we left, so our ADR had been timed perfectly to avoid the noise and bustle.

We continued around WS, stopping for a photo that turned into a bit of a Marilyn moment. OOPS! :o

marilyn moment.JPG

Next on our to-do list was to get in line to meet Mary Poppins since we hadn’t made it in time earlier in the trip. It was a bit of a wait in the hot sun, but so worth it because she spent FOREVER with Asher. I have about a million photos and everyone around was entertained, there were choruses of “AWWWWW…” throughout the entire interaction. There was a lot of hugging and hand kisses, but I'm not sure she had bargained for getting felt up by a toddler. I'm pretty sure it was inadvertent? :scratchin

Mary Poppins Collage.jpg

She asked Asher to wait and when she finished up her set, he escorted her to the back of the UK pavilion. Ermergerd…it was so cute. :lovestruc

It was getting past the time we planned to start our drive, then we realized we’d rather spend another couple of hours at Epcot than sit around at a hotel in Georgia. Off to Mexico we went for another round of Don Duck’s boat ride and grapefruit margaritas, followed by a Photopass shoot starring said margaritas:

photopass.jpg
We finished up our shopping at the IG shop then made the sad trek back to Beach Club to get our vehicle.

departure.JPG
(not our vehicle, probably not something you wanna make a 12 hour drive in :drive:)

Our drive home was miserable as usual. First Asher woke up crying from his car nap, screaming “I want my hotel back!!!!” (This phrase was repeated every morning for weeks, he really loved the Beach Club.) Then the next morning on our way out to the car to finish our crappy drive, he wiped out on the sidewalk and skinned his knee up badly. This pretty much ruined the day. We are three for three on bad drives home from WDW.:sad2:

Let’s not end on a negative note though, it was a great trip overall. The weather was amazing, the best we’ve ever had on a trip. We had a ton of fun and still managed a relaxed pace, which was what I was hoping for. Beach Club’s location is wonderful and my favorite part of staying at that resort. The convenience of getting to Epcot and area restaurants is a game-changer for those who have small children that still take lengthy naps. We had so many great meals that it is hard to choose favorites, but I will try…

Best Quick Service
We didn’t have much QS to compare to, but I have to give this one to Les Halles for breakfast when it’s quiet and uncrowded. The delicious coffee put it over the top.

Best New-to-Us Restaurant
It’s very difficult to pick a favorite in this category because it comes close to a three-way tie among three spots: Liberty Tree Tavern, Nine Dragons, and Yak & Yeti. I want to say Nine Dragons because the atmosphere was so refreshing for a lunch break and the prices so reasonable, but Chad would say Y&Y because he loved the atmosphere and the cocktails were so fun. So, I’ll defer to his vote and go with Yak & Yeti. It will definitely be a regular stop for us on AK days.

Best Character Meal
We really loved everything about our Garden Grill experience: walking though WS for our PPO ADR, the awesome character interaction, seeing the Living with the Land scenes as we rotated by, not having to get up and go to a buffet. It’s a wonderful breakfast, highly recommended.

Best Snack
Those fries from Mr. Kamal’s at AK were a surprise favorite. I would totally get those again, they ticked all the boxes for a savory snack: hot, crispy, spicy, and flavorful.

Best Flower and Garden Booth Item
This is a tough one, if I were more of a sweets person I would go with the honey mascarpone cheesecake, but when I think about it, the one item that I wish I had gone back for more of was the fried cauliflower from the Morocco booth. I loved the flavors and the portion made it a good value.

Best Drink
Beers and wines are fairly subjective, depending on your preferences of varieties and styles, so I’m thinking more of cocktails for this category. The most memorable drink of the trip was the Pink Himalayan at Yak & Yeti. It was exactly the kind of cocktail I enjoy, so refreshing and I can’t wait to have it again.

Best Overall Dining Experience
This is a no-brainer. Absolutely, without a doubt, Brunch at the Top at California Grill was pretty much perfect. The food, service, atmosphere, mimosas…it’s really something special. I’m so glad we did it, totally worth the investment.

Well, I guess that’s it for this dining report. Hope you’ve all enjoyed following along! I’ll be busy planning my solo long weekend trip for this fall and then we’ll be gearing up for a Spring break family trip in 2019. As always, I’ll be following along with dining reviews and reports to get ideas to add to my list. Until the next report…:wave2:
