there never really were any protests against tourists for using vacation rentals...resentment...quite a bit (in a "target of convenience" sort of way). there were protests against airbnb as a company tho (not at the airports or tourist locations...but near the state capital building). some of the vacation rental problems have been resolved...others remain.
the more recent protests stem from lack of faith in the local governments ability to follow through on announced plans to handle the pandemic. in this case its more of a "we want action, so if we have to do this to force the state officials to act...we will"...just that it doesn't really fit well on a sign or generate the needed buzz.
