Making your own Droid Backpack. Anyone have dimensions?

We are super excited to be at Fort Wilderness the end of October and looking forward to EMH. We are going to be super early risers and drive to HS before rope drop.

Since we don’t have a million credits (Ha!) to spend, we’re looking at building a droid to carry around SWGE as our big splurge. I can’t wait to have her interact with other droids while we are playing the interactive “Datapad” game on our phones - Resistance side for us.

It sounds like the backpacks are a quick sell out item in Disneyland. Figure the same for WDW. The box totes look awkward to carry around. So, I’m going to put my sewing machine to work and make a backpack for our soon to be droid to carry in and out over a couple of days. I have some extra SW fabric to use.

Does anyone have any real specs on the backpacks? I’ve seen pics. And a mention of someone using a clear cat carrier backpack as a DIY backpack.

I’d like to appropriately size the backpack I make so our droid can “see out”.

Between this and Halloween decorations for our campsite and painting character rocks to leave @ Fort Wilderness - the time until our trip will pass super quick!

If anyone is interested, they usually have great SW fabric at JoAnns. If I don’t use my stash fabric - I like one of these two fabrics that are 9.00/yd on-line and at my local store.

There is a backpack PDF I got for free online that converts from backpack to sling - I’m looking at converting this to fit a droid with a droid “window” on top front instead of the two pockets.

Just popping in to say that this is a great idea! When I read the thread title, I thought, "Ooo, that sounds like something I'd buy on Etsy!" So I went over, and there are already a couple custom jobs over there for BB units. If Disney can't figure out how to keep these in stock (or make them more visually interesting), crafty people will make their own (and people like me will buy them).

search the you tubes for dan - o . The video he does all of the personality chips towards the end he takes measurements. I want to say either 11 or 13" high.. 7.5" wide and like 5.5" front to back on the R series..

I can measure when I get home if you need. The one part that is pretty important is the foam insert that holds them in place
A bag alone won't give the protection

Got some photos that hopefully will help. If you want anything else let me know

I’ve ended up getting the Etsy droid backpack pattern for the BB8 droid (since this is the one we are getting). It’s lighter than what I was originally planning. But it actually makes more sense for how we are traveling through the parks. (One BB8 backpack, one mailbag with everything else between 2 adults).

Even though we have a droid reservation- I’m still not convinced things won’t be sold out by October. Plus, the BB8 droids don’t function as well according to a few reports in the Disney droid backpack - they sink lower into the packs.

Luckily- still using fabric I have - except for buying the mesh.

Electronic Pattern is 5.00 on Etsy at AnachronismInAction. The bag won’t hold much more than the droid - but I prefer this. Great pattern from her. I’ll post pictures when I’ve finished.

Something else to note, the official bag includes a chain to hold the head on the BB units, since they don't fully attach. I think you can see it in the photo. But if you aren't going to have a flap to open like the official one it may not matter

Thanks!

We are so excited to see SWGE and be able to walk around, people watch, and play the “datapad” game.

It’s going to be pretty cool.

THANK YOU! THe measurements on your photos of the droid bag size was exactly what I've been looking for! Looks a droid bag will just fit into my typical backpack - giving me enough other space in the regular backpack outside pockets for my "purse" items. My droid will be coming home on the plane!

Review on degree of difficulty? The seller is actually a professional Hollywood costumer who made this backpack for her own droid, posted it on Instagram, and got so much interest in it that she started selling the pattern. So, her bio and the photos intimidate me into believing that the pack's pattern is Not for Beginners.

I’ve been super impressed with the cat backpacks being used as “droid pods”
Yep, me, too. I've been scouring Amazon, and found a couple at a nice price with color choices. So my two kids who are building droids can get different color bags that coordinate with the colors I know they will choose for their droids. As I said elsewhere, patches and pins for customization. Boom. :P

It’s not as complicated a pattern as I was planning to sew originally. I’ve made a couple of bags, and I usually add zippers, etc.

This Etsy pattern I’m doing isn’t very difficult to me, having sewn other bags, I’m working on a Bernina. But the cat bags sound like a great option as well!

I'm looking into getting a pet backpack just because I don't want to risk the ones at SWGE being sold out when I go in November, I can also save some money too...decisions decisions lol

I got a bag for $12 from World Market - it fits the (R2) droid perfectly and there is even a pouch inside for his remote. It won’t protect him from weather though.
