I used to think that most postpartum units were quite similar, but soon realized that was not true . (Just hearing about my cousin’s experience in London really opened my eyes to the differences around the world).
For decades, I have worked in an urban hospital, located in the NE part of the US, that does about 5000 deliveries per year. We do dyad nursing (caring for both mom and baby). When I first started working there, our average assignment was 7-8 dyads (yup, 14-16 patients per nurse). We care for magnesium sulfate patients on our postpartum unit, as well as administer IV antibiotics to babies and our average patient assignment now is about 3-4 dyads.
We are a baby-friendly Hospital so most of our babies room in with mom (although we do maintain a working nursery).
Would love to hear about your hospital!
