After serving in the Army Medical Corps in World War II, Joe Flynn (1924-1974) majored in political science at USC. He became convinced that comedy was his forte when people laughed at his serious performance in The Indestructible Man with Lon Chaney, Jr.

Probably best known for the TV show McHale's Navy (1962-66), for Disney he appeared in Son of Flubber, The Love Bug, The Strongest Man in the World, Now You See Him, Now You Don't, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, Superdad, The Million Dollar Duck, and The Barefoot Executive. He also voiced Mr. Snoops in The Rescuers.

Flynn was found dead in his swimming pool; his obituary stated he had a heart attack while swimming.

Luana Patten (1938-1996) was one of the first two actors put under contract to Disney Studios. For Disney, she appeared in Song of the South, So Dear to My Heart, Johnny Tremain, Melody Time, Fun and Fancy Free, and Follow Me, Boys! She also was considered to play Alice before Alice in Wonderland became entirely animated. As an adult, she guested on numerous TV Westerns, including Cimarron City, Rawhide, Wagon Train, Bonanza, Daniel Boone, and F Troop. She retired from film work in 1968, with the exception of playing the "Old Lady" in Grotesque (1988).

According to IMDB, "While a student at Wilson High in Long Beach California in 1956, [Patten] was working as a box office cashier at the Lakewood Center Theater when it was held up. The movie playing was her first film, Song of
the South (1946)."

For the weekend, let's take a look at another Mary Poppins pair, Mr. and Mrs. Banks.

David Cecil MacAlister Tomlinson (1917-2000) was in the RAF during World War II, serving as a flight instructor. After Mary Poppins, Disney asked him back for The Love Bug and Bedknobs and Broomsticks. The remainder of his film career was mostly comedies, with his last film being 1980's The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu (also his friend Peter Sellers' last film). He retired to spend more time with his family.

According to IMDB, "Upon his death in 2000 British satirical magazine Private Eye published an uncharacteristically warm poem in tribute to him 'So farewell David Tomlinson, noted British character actor..."Let's go fly a kite, up to the highest height.". Yes, that was your catchphrase. And where you are going now'."

Tomlinson was named a Disney Legend in 2002.

Glynis Johns was born in 1923 in South Africa when her parents were on tour. She made her first stage appearance as a child ballerina and then was cast on the London stage. She made her film debut while still a teenager (actually, both she and David Tomlinson appeared in a 1941 film called Quiet Wedding), and became a star playing a mermaid in Miranda. For Disney, she starred with Richard Todd in The Sword and the Rose and Rob Roy, the Highland Rogue before Mary Poppins. As Mrs. Banks, of course, she sang "Sister Sufragette," which the Sherman Brothers wrote especially for her. Later Stephen Sondheim wrote "Send in the Clowns" for her in A Little Night Music. Her later career focused mainly on the stage, but you may also remember her as Elsie in Hollywood Pictures' While You Were Sleeping.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

+90 minutes tonight from a loooong walk with the doggy. He had to be carried about half the way. Lol. This should help me catch up since I haven't been able to get in a full 30 minutes every day during the week like I had planned.

It's already the last week of March. Would anyone be up for hosting April? No obsessive researching of obscure Disney stars required, really.

Brian Keith (1921-1997) was born Robert Alba Keith. He made his film debut at age three, in the silent film Pied Piper Malone. After serving as an air gunner in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II, he worked in theater, then films and TV (including Family Affair (1966-71) and Hardcastle and McCormick (1983-86)). For Disney, he appeared in Ten Who Dared, The Parent Trap, Moon Pilot, Savage Sam, A Tiger Walks, Those Calloways, and Scandalous John, as well as various Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color episodes. One interesting thing is that he spoke fluent Russian, which led to him being cast as a Russian a couple of times.
