Not a word (peeve thread - what's yours?)

Melty. Sorry fast food establishments, but melty is made up and ridiculous.

As to littles, it is one of those words (fake words) that makes me question one’s depth. I assume that people who use it are doing their best to be pretentious but just don’t have the intelligence to pull it off.

Or lazy, I don’t feel like naming all five of my kids in a sentence.

Several of these I actually don't know what they mean. I was going to ask what "littles" meant but someone answered in an earlier post. Several others I've never encountered.

Mine is when people say whom when they mean who. Drives me nuts! Interestingly it does not bother me when people say who when they mean whom.

Littles.

Littles. is. not. a. word. Stopping using it as such.

And learn how to use ellipses. "..." should not be used 25 times in two-three short paragraphs.

Thank you for saying that about ellipses!
I don’t get it! Is it that people think they’re writing out a stream of consciousness, pausing for dramatic effect? I’ve even seen it done with hyphens——-what the heck——is that about?

Mine is welp used instead of well, as in “welp, that’s done.” It makes me cringe every time I read or hear it used. The real word whelp means a puppy or the act of a female dog giving birth to a puppy, not quite what the welp users are going for.

It’s a word in the scrabble dictionary and is worth nine points.

Also, at my DD’s sorority, it’s a word. “four littles and four bigs are going to recruitment.”

It's not in the Merriam-Webster dictionary https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/littles#other-words
Or the Cambridge Dictionary https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/
Or dictionary.com https://www.dictionary.com/browse/little
Or the Free Dictionary https://www.thefreedictionary.com/Littles
It doesn't even appear in the Scrabble Dictionary online https://scrabble.hasbro.com/en-us/search?q=Littles

The ones I see frequently on the DIS are: taters

You could say children.
I never used it until #4 and #5 were born, and then there was usually a separation between the two groups, and more of a divide and conquer approach. Take the bigs to the store while I put the littles down for a nap; the bigs are sleeping at grandmas tonight; the littles have a dentist appointment. It was more of an in house communication term.

Of course, bigs and littles are used frequently in Greek life.

The only time (I think) I've heard "littles" used is in sports... In soccer, age groups are defined as "under-age" so you have U6, U7, U8, U10, etc all the way up to U19. I've heard people (mainly refs) say "I had multiple U-littles games". It's referring to the younger set (probably younger than 9). It doesn't bother me.

Language evolves by its very nature. We pick up new words as our culture changes and as new technologies and experiences become available. It's just how the world works. Just like complaining about new words or "kids these days":

Our sires' age was worse than our grandsires'. We, their sons, are more
worthless than they; so in our turn we shall give the world a progeny yet more
corrupt.

- Horace, "Odes", circa 20 BC

And, as always, there's a xkcd for this situation:

The overuse of the word "literally". Its gotten out of hand.

"Adulting", or use of the word "adult" in any other form other than a noun.

YES!!! I was listening to a podcast the other day and they must have said literally about 25 times during an hour long show.
