DH and I returned from our first ever, long-awaited kid free trip to the World June 17-24. We were on the dining plan and used every credit, including snacks, and made use of the included cocktails. We made it a point to try to eat and restaurants we had never been to before.

And came home in desperate need of the gym and a diet plan :)

This was a trip canceled twice before: The first time 5 days before we left because our youngest son was very ill and in the testing phases of some pretty scary stuff. Luckily all turned out well, the chronic condition is well controlled with medication, diet and some retraining of his gastrointestinal system. The second time we canceled because my mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer 2 months before our trip and her first chemo was scheduled the day we were supposed to leave. We apparently don't have luck scheduling April trips!

Both of our younger kids signed up to go on a mission trip in June leaving DH and I to plan our trip home finally. I wasn't cracked about going in June because of the heat and crowds, but it was actually a lovely trip and not as bad as we expected it to be.

I have allergies to wheat, peanut, egg and tomato (hence the crazy title) and Disney is one place I feel comfortable eating and boy do they treat me well! I know how valuable allergy friendly reviews are (but I have lots of non allergy food porn too!) So, here are the fabulous, the good and unfortunately, a downright scary review of our time at Disney!

Day 1
Cookes of Dublin/Erin McKenna
Ale and Compass

Day 2
Katsura Grill
Trattoria al Forno

Day 3
Casey's
Narcoossees

Day 4
Market at Ale and Compass
Sanaa

Day 5
Cosmic Rays
Kona Cafe

Day 6
La Cantina de San Angel
Cape May

Day 7
Market at Ale and Compass

We were crazy and drove from Indiana because we booked right around 30 days out and the flights were crazy expensive. I hate to fly anyhow so I wasn't too torn up about driving :) Driving with food allergies means lots of Chick Fil A or Wendy's for me which is okay.

We arrived at Yacht Club, stowed our bags with bell services so they weren't sitting in the car, then drove to Disney Springs. The plan was to eat lunch, shop a little, watch Incredibles 2 and then stock up on Erin McKenna's. We've been to Raglan Road but never to Cooke's so we started our "all new to us restaurant plan" out here.

I had gluten free fish and onion rings. Hello, fried foods! With a wheat allergy it's impossible to eat fried foods out. When the manager brought our food over we laughed that I had driven 2 days for it :) She ended up bringing me the recipe for the batter. There is egg in the tartar sauce so I skipped it. I was concerned it wouldn't be as good as Raglan Road's but I couldn't tell the difference at all

enhance

DH went for the regular fish and chips. Anyone else think mine looks better?

We did have a slight snafu trying to use our Magic Bands when we ordered because it wouldn't take my pin. They reset it for me right there at the register and all was well!

So, cholesterol sufficiently higher, we headed back outside. It was so unbearably hot and crowded, we had been driving for basically a day and a half and the next showing of Incredibles was late meaning we'd have to kill 4 hours of time. Unpacking and hitting the pool sounded like a much nicer plan, so we skipped the movie and headed to Erin McKennas. When you have a gluten allergy, baked goods are impossible to come by. I can do egg in baked goods as long as I'm careful and don't overindulge, but I love the fact that EM is vegan so I can eat as much as I want.

I spent snack credits to get 4 donuts (I told her to just pick 4 of her favorites and box them up) and 2 cinnamon rolls, one for each morning of our trip for my breakfast. I didn't take a picture of the cinnamon rolls but I wish I would have just gotten those and skipped the donuts (or gotten plainer donuts). They were so good! The donuts were a little too much sugar in the morning.
enhance

I also paid out of pocket for a pineapple upside down cake which was seriously the best thing I have ever eaten since going gluten free.

enhance

After a room change (first room was bad bad bad) we hit the pool and started looking for a dinner reservation for the evening on MDE. We don't usually make dinner plans for the night we arrive since we are driving and really don't know what our arrival time will be like. The thought of staying someplace close was super appealing, and I had told DH when we were planning our trip I wasn't doing any buffets this time (our kids want buffets left and right when we go to Disney) so we finally settled on Ale and Compass.

I 100% Agree about the pineapple upside down cake. Gluten free heaven! I'm always shocked when people say they don't like Erin McKennas - I've always been pleased. I love their Samoa donut too.

I've never actually had the GF onion rings though, they look awesome. I'll have to put them on my list :)

Following along!!

Welcome!

Following! Your fish and pineapple upside down cake have me drooling!

That pineapple upside down cake was heaven!

You must get the onion rings!! They have them at Raglan Road too

Wow gf and amazing looking food. Can’t wait to see your other offerings

We ate very well!

Following along!

Welcome!

We hadn't made a reservation for dinner on our first night opting to just play it by ear. We ended up finding an open Ale and Compass for later the first evening. Since we were staying at Yacht Club it was nice to be able to just walk to dinner. We did stop in the Ale and Compass Lounge for a cocktail before dinner. The novelty of being able to sit in a lounge and chat and people watch before dinner was one of the best parts of being kid free! DH had a Long Island and I went with the Just Peachy(which I liked so much I had another with dinner!)

enhance

Our waitress Claudia was great and made sure to ask the chef that it was okay for me to order the Coastal Clambake and that it didn't have tomatoes in it before she let me have it. The flavor was great but the lobster was a tad chewy.

enhance

DH had the same thing
enhance

And for dessert my only gluten free option was the 12 layer chocolate cake. It is not egg free but I am okay to do baked eggs.
enhance

DH went with the same thing. When I asked him what made his different other than not having an allergy tag on it and he responded "for some reason they put tomatoes on my plate"? I started cracking up when I realized he wasn't wearing his glasses and the "tomatoes" were actually raspberries.

Dinner was good, not spectacular, but it was a great use of a dining credit and the drinks included were probably the strongest we had all week (maybe that's why he thought raspberries were tomatoes!!!) The service was really good though and we were in and out pretty quick.

The A&C lounge looks swanky, I like the colors. Always good to know where the strong drinks are on property! :thumbsup2

For breakfast on day 2 DH spent a snack credit at Market at Ale and Compass for a pastry and I dug into an Erin McKenna's donut while we walked to Epcot. It was maybe a 15 minute walk the International Gateway from our room. Love that!

Eating at Epcot with food allergies can be sketchy in the World Showcase. I felt pretty safe going to Katsura Grill for sushi. They have a gluten free veggie roll and I was surprised to find out it came with gluten free soy sauce on the side. I opted for the green tea colada which was so refreshing but maybe a little too sweet

enhance

DH went with the sushi combo and Sapporo draft beer
enhance

The sushi was very fresh and I was impressed the girl at the counter knew all about gluten free options.

I am super excited about your report! While my food allergies are mild and mostly just cause abdominal discomfort, I have major gastrointestinal issues. It is nice to see you have so many delicious choices at Disney. So far, all your meals look great! I'm a huge fan of Cooke's of Dublin, and I think your fish looked better than the regular option!

Following along! No allergies here, but I love reading about how accommodating Disney is! And that doesn't surprise me re: the knowledge of the cast member at Katsura Grill. I've found the CMs in Japan to be among the best in WDW! Looking forward to more!

Not gonna lie, they both look absolutely divine! I am partial to onion rings, though, so I'll give yours the nod!

They were so good! The donuts were a little too much sugar in the morning.
Wow those look FANTASTIC!!! I may need to stop in there myself, despite not having any allergies...

After a room change (first room was bad bad bad)
Oh no what happened with that?

Our waitress Claudia was great and made sure to ask the chef that it was okay for me to order the Coastal Clambake and that it didn't have tomatoes in it before she let me have it. The flavor was great but the lobster was a tad chewy.
That is an impressive spread! I hate that the lobster was underwhelming but it does look delicious!

When I asked him what made his different other than not having an allergy tag on it and he responded "for some reason they put tomatoes on my plate"? I started cracking up when I realized he wasn't wearing his glasses and the "tomatoes" were actually raspberries.
:rotfl: that is hysterical.

It was really nice in there. Pretty quiet too!

I miss onion rings so much so it's nice when I can have them!

We originally had San Angel booked for dinner this night. We've never been but it always looks so pretty. A couple of weeks before we left I saw some really bad reviews, including an allergic reaction and complaints that the tables were so close together so we canceled it and decided to maybe play by ear. After a long hot day at Epcot we wanted something close by. I had seen some really good allergy friendly reviews for Trattoria al Forno. I never get Italian (wheat and tomato allergies? No way) They had steak on the menu so I knew I would be able to eat something at least.

Peach bellini because I love them and some weird bourbon thing for DH
enhance

Our waitress was Stephanie and this girl was my favorite server of our entire trip. She literally stood there for 10 minutes and helped me basically create a meal. "We can do this but we can't do that but we can fry this and we have pasta and we could do this sauce or this" She was so on top of everything that we made sure to tell the manager how fantastic she was.

Rolls for me (ener G) with olive oil and cheese. The rolls sometimes are iffy on how well they are heated and these were perfect. DH was given bread too but he's lame and didn't take a picture. It's like he's new here or something. Dude, we always take pictures of our food at Disney.

enhance

Behold people. Calamari. Gluten and egg safe and DH was impressed too.

enhance

Can you just feel my cholesterol raising as the days go by???

DH was all about lasagna. He doesn't get red sauce very often. He said it was pretty good
enhance

And here we go. My favorite meal of the trip (and this is saying something because we ate at Narcoossees too!

Chicken parmigiana with alfredo sauce instead of red sauce with pasta alfredo. I gave DH a bite of chicken and he was wishing he had ordered mine. I can't even begin to explain how good it was.
enhance

We were sufficiently stuffed but dessert was of course included because we were on the dining plan. We ended up getting a cheesecake for me and tiramisu for DH and took it to the beach at the Yacht Club to eat while watching the fireworks from DHS. The cheesecake was not egg free but was gluten free. I can do baked egg but cheesecake can be tricky. I only ate a couple of bites because honestly, it wasn't all that great. DH loved his tiramisu. So much so he chowed down before he took a picture. Again. Sigh.

enhance

So other than dessert being a flop, dinner was great and probably our top choice food wise!

Happy Anniversary to us!

In keeping with our "all new restaurants to us" plan, we ran into a bit of a snafu. We've apparently spent way too many days at Magic Kingdom and had been to all the counter services places except one: Casey's.

This led to kind of a fight. I hate hot dogs. Loathe. Despise. We grew up camping every summer and I think too many campfire meals. I hate marshmellows too. I wanted to leave and go to a resort counter service but I got outvoted. We tried to get in at Plaza but they didn't have anything available either. So Casey's it was.

DH went for the "I hate myself and am going to eat like a teenager at a baseball game" chili dogs and chili cheese fries
enhance

So here it is. My anniversary hot dog that I ate 3 bites of and then tossed. It was way too hot outside for me to eat something I hate. It's on a gluten free (but not egg free) bun. Fries were not safe so they gave me apples.
enhance

I kind of had this for lunch instead :)
enhance

Oh wow, that coastal clambake looked great!!

That peach bellini... :lovestruc:lovestruc:lovestruc

Aww, Stephanie sounded so sweet!! I'm so glad you got such an awesome server, they can really turn a restaurant experience from a 8/10 to a 12/10!!

Oh yikes, sorry about Casey's! :crazy2: That citrus swirl looked great, though! Citrus swirl is always an appropriate lunch. :thumbsup2
