Sayhello, I was told the same thing by ABD, but I was able to add an extra pre-night by contacting the hotel directly. That's interesting, because when I tried to add an extra pre-night to my Iceland ABD, I was told flat out there was no availability and no waitlist was offered. I guess the Disneyland Hotels are a *bit* more flexible than Icelandair!
Personally, I'd make other (refundable) arrangements, and then if you get the ABD add-on before the other hotel's cancellation date, consider it a bonus!

Thanks, @BluesTraveler, I did that, too. But in my case, it was cheaper to do it that way, so it was a no brainer, since I was able to keep my transfers. The OP has the issue that it's more expensive for him to book directly with the hotel. How often does *that* happen?Sayhello, I was told the same thing by ABD, but I was able to add an extra pre-night by contacting the hotel directly.
I know! Plus, the transfers include a stop at the Blue Lagoon, with the Premium package! I was glad to find out I'll be keeping that benefit, too!Good thing you kept your transfers for it is quite expensive to transfer from the airport to the hotel in Reykjavik.

You're going to love the Blue Lagoon. One thing they have "shower police" where they will not allow you to enter the pool unless you shower. Now THAT is serious. lol.
I'd already booked a pre-night through ABD, and decided to add a second pre-night so I could have a full day in Reykjavik. It was the second night they couldn't acommodate, so they told my TA to have me book the second night on my own, and let them know what the reservation # was so they could link them, and that I would keep the transfers. So that might be why my answer was different from yours?I asked my TA how much an extra pre-night at the Icelandair hotel would be and she quoted me a rate that was $200.00 more than the price if I booked direct. She then told me that I would lose my transfer if I booked the hotel myself. The TA also told me that we would be responsible to get to the Blue Lagoon on our own the next morning but that we could take the ABD transfer back to the hotel. To be honest I have a thing about public pools (and showers -- I just can't do them) so I am not sure if I would be able to do the Blue Lagoon.
We are looking at taking a day-time flight to Iceland direct from Toronto as opposed to a 5 hour overnight flight (where I'd be lucky to get 3.5 hours of sleep). So o the pre-night makes sense to me.
Reykjavik is a very cool city, and the harbor area is very fun to walk around. Lots of shopping and such, plus you could go up to the top of Hallgrímskirkja church for a great view of the town. I'm not sure about the lunch thing, because I walked around trying to find a nice dinner on a Friday evening, and couldn't find a table anywhere! They had a hopping night life going on! So I ended up in a curry place. But I'm sure you could find a nice place if you do some research. I'm thinking of doing a food walking tour...I was thinking about walking around town in the morning and enjoying a nice lunch. Thoughts?

Is it really worth it? I don't know if I could handle it. Public pools, to me, are cesspools of germs. Add dozens of strangers to the mix with who knows what kinds of infections, warts, fungi, etc. and I don't think I'd be able to enjoy it at all (this is a hangup of mine -- luckily we've always had our own pool and jacuzzis at home so I've never felt the need to go to public swimming / bathing areas).
