Ok. I slept on it, and I'm still feeling some things.

*SPOILERS*

1. I know for a fact that they shot on location in many of the areas. However, the CGI was a little to much in places.

2. Cut with the comedy. Please! It's nice to have a little. However, the comedy they are putting in TFA and now this movie is just one and done comedy for me. I haven't enjoyed seeing the comedy in TFA whenever I have watched it again.

3. What in the world is going to happen to Leia? She didn't die...and *BIG SPOILER*...The only character from the original trilogy still alive.

4. Mark Hamill was great in this movie for what he had to portray. However, does anyone really think Luke Skywalker was not himself for the majority of the movie?

5. I don't know if I liked the whole "lets talk to another person on another planet thing." The only time that was cool was the very end for obvious reasons, but I won't give that away. Like, whatever happened to the whole "I will go to the person and they will sense the force type of a thing and endanger the mission?"

6. *SPOILER* As the movie went on, I pretty much knew Ben Kenobi or Yoda were going to pop up at some point. Like, who was really going to talk Luke Skywalker into helping the Resistance?

7. The Porgs are so cute!!! I also really liked the Volptex's.

8. *SPOILER* Are we going to have another kid?!?!?! Goodness! I did not like that ending at all. They should have just left it with the resistance escaping.

9. *SPOILER* How did Rey get back on the Millennium Falcon and to Chewie after escaping Kylo Ren?

10. *SPOILER* I really liked the sunset at the end bringing back memories of episode IV. However, is that the best way for Luke to leave us?

There were many parts of this movie that just did not make sense. The cohesiveness of telling the story was jumbled in many parts. Even though I did enjoy the movie, I do not know how many times I will go see it again. I'll probably see it one more time at least.

I will also say this...If Rian Johnson is being thought of doing a whole trilogy on his own, I am now against that idea.

I think my overall take is that force awakens was way too safe, and I think you could argue this one was too risky. I don’t hold that opinion because I was 120% against rehash, but I can see how some of the parts of this movie would rub people the wrong way.

The vibe I got was this could’ve been the closer of the trilogy but it’s not, which leaves me with a lot of questions as to how this will wrap up. My friend also brought up a good point saying that this movie “felt like it started in the middle of the movie and also ended during the middle of a movie”. Basically it really jumped into things and didn’t have a resolution at the end, which makes sense in a way because it’s a bridge movie. But still kind of hard to process how abruptly the movie begins and ends in some way

Ok, so I wasn't particularly enamored of TFA, although I did enjoy it. I'm more fond of RO and I enjoy films that take chances and as Luke says, "This is not going to go the way you think!" plots.

Would you put TLJ in the latter camp?

The CGI didn’t bother me much at all.

I actually liked the comedy. Sure some parts could have done without it but I liked it.

Yeah Leia not dying I just don’t know what happened there. Either she’s dead right at the beginning of 9 or dies before and we are told in the opening scroll.

Yeah I liked the Porgs more than I thought I would.

I wasn’t huge on that ending with the kid either.

As for Rey getting back when Hux finds Kylo and Snoke dead, Kylo said Rey took the escape pod. So she must have found Chewie after that.

I really didn’t think Luke would die in this film. I’m thinking he will return though in 9 at least in hologram form like Yoda did here. I thought Hamill is signed on for 9.

I disagree on Rian Johnson. I liked him better than JJ Abrams and the risks he took. The new trilogy isn’t supposed to be about the Skywalkers anyways. I’m excited to see what he can do.

I have to be in a prep call for a deposition next week so don't get to see it until tomorrow so I'm reading all of ya'll's and my SW group's spoilers. I think I have the entire movie now, but I still can't wait.

So I wanted to go into this as cold as possible, no trailers, no details, nothing. I did end up seeing a trailer before Bladerunner 2049, so I did the best I could at trying to have no ideas or expectations going in.

Overall thoughts first: My gut reaction is that I liked it. I didn't love it but also I think all three movies have to be out and experienced first to have a sense of where it fits. Let's say I'm not mad or disappointed. I'm glad I went and saw it. I might go see it again while my son is out of town.

Other thoughts:
  • I'm gonna go against the grain here in saying I appreciated the comedy. There were some intense moments so I liked that they lightened things up a bit. I think people expect these to be serious 100% of the time. But let's be real, Star Wars is kinda corny to begin with. I don't like the overly serious sci-fi stuff, there's gotta be some humor there.
  • I do feel some of the C-Plot Casino stuff was unnecessary. Felt like someone realized they wrote themselves into a hole and worked their way back out again with a convoluted solution. Lots of parallels (or maybe subtle nods?) to Empire, some were appreciated and some were a little eye-rolley.
  • I do think this movie was more risky. A lot of depth was added to the powers that we haven't seen before and I liked it. It could've gone Deus Ex Machina real fast but I think it worked for what it was.
  • Do not want to hang out with Luke Skywalker on a farm.
  • One more thing: Percy Weasley hit it out of the park too. He really wanted that power and he sure loves his authority. I just love the casting choice there.

Yeah. I see your point about Rian Johnson. I think just many parts of this movie turned me off about him.

One more thing...SPOILER!

We wait 2 years to see the dramatic moment if Luke Skywalker would take the lightsaber from Rey. Luke...*Takes lightsaber*. *Stares at it dramatically* Then...We all want him to say something...Luke...*Chucks the lightsaber over the ridge and walks away*. Rey...*looks stunned*.

REALLY?!?!?! We wait 2 years for that!?!?!?

That's probably the one scene that made me the most upset.

I think there's a difference between adding humor and adding things that are tonally not a fit with the Star Wars franchise – at least the non-prequel episodes. Luke milking that animal was bizarre and very low-hanging fruit, almost like what SNL would parody about Star Wars. I also thought him being so flippant about throwing the lightsaber away was also a very poor comedic choice.

I think the lightsaber move was to show he didn’t want to return and that he felt the Jedi should be done. I agree about the milk thing but I didn’t mind so much throwing the lightsaber.

The milk thing was why I do not want to go hang out on a farm with him! That was pretty bizarre and gross. But in thinking about it, I see it as a parallel to Yoda being pretty weird after living alone for years. He was trying to freak Rey out and scare her off, IMO.

One more thing too, I think people hold up Star Wars to be this series with a lot of acclaim and lore and stuff. Very serious content etc. But the more I think about it, it's cheesy as hell. I like the movies a lot, I grew up watching them on those first run VHS tapes. Was just the right age to watch them over and over again and really think it was cool. But the acting and writing has never been the best. I think it's a good thing for them to poke fun at themselves because people take Star Wars so seriously, especially the mega-fans who over analyze every little thing.

Yeah I’d agree. It’s held up as some sacred cow that needs to be sanctified as some holy grail of cinema. I love the movies I really do. But people take them so damn seriously (particularly the original trilogy). I’m not saying every aspect of this film or TFA was executed perfectly, but if we look back it’s not as if the original trilogy was perfect either (I think ROTJ is a very weak movie tbh). We’re all entitled to our opinions, but in the end they’re supposed to be fun and exciting movies not citizen Kane

Yeah exactly. And I like Ewoks, so I'm already literally the worst person ever so there's that. I'm gonna go buy myself a porg plushie too!

Ewoks are cool, just not as an army to defeat an elite imperial force .

I think some of that original trilogy nostalgia is that the prequels were so lackluster in a lot of ways. We always talk about how nostalgia clouds our judgement when it comes to the parks around here, and I think it does that with movies such as Star Wars as well

Yeah I think they're cute as a sidekick, but not necessarily a fighting force! I think the way they implemented the porgs was good although I could do without the ear piercing scream.
