FOR CELIACS AND OTHERS WHO ARE GLUTEN-INTOLERANT

I'm a Celiac, which means I have an auto-immune disease that causes my body to attack itself if I'm exposed to gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. I've been PM'ing with another couple of guests about eating gluten-free (GF) on the Magic, and thought I'd post some information I got from Disney about doing so. There is a thread devoted to this topic, and you can find it here.

Now here's what I found out from Disney:

------------

Because my DW and I have access to Concierge services, I took advantage of that to call and ask questions about GF foods and service on behalf of me and another guest. The Concierge people referred me to Special Services, who were very good, but very cautious (as is appropriate). They spent about half an hour with me, and here's a summary of what they said:

First, if you have a medical condition relating to diet (such as Celiac disease) you can certainly bring dry, packaged foods onboard as long as they are unopened.

Second, because the Magic has been in Europe since April, and has been reprovisioning there, they cannot promise any particular brand of GF foods, such as the Chex breakfast cereals (which I always buy when I'm in the States), but they will have GF crackers, cookies, pasta, waffles, breads, cereals, and they have a pizza crust mix, so can make pizza. They also make GF desserts, but they make them fresh onboard, so what's available depends on what they make. From my own experience, I can tell you that generally speaking, Europe is way ahead of North America in providing GF foods, but they will probably be brands with which you're not familiar.

Third, the key contact for you on all matters relating to food is your dining room head server (like a head waiter who doesn't actually bring your food but supervises service), who acts as the go-between between the kitchen and the dining rooms. Make sure you talk to him/her early on in the cruise, and discuss your needs/wants. Then, with your waitstaff, plan on ordering ahead to the extent possible. When we were on the January 2009 cruise, we ordered the next day's supper a day ahead from the next day's menu. Now I think they are encouraging you to order as much as you can ahead, including breakfast and lunch if possible.

Finally, and the only real bad news, is that they recommend that you take all of your meals in the main dining rooms (Lumiere's, Parrot Cay, Artist's Palette, or Palo's) because they have the most control over the food there. I asked about the other venues, and here's what they said:
1) Buffets – Go to Parrot Cay for lunch on embarkation day and talk to one of the dining room head servers, who will ask a chef to walk you through the selections. After that, "it's best" to avoid buffets, such as Topsiders because another guest might move a spoon, for example, from one dish to another, causing cross-contamination. Since they have no control over that, they discourage eating at the buffets. (I did note, though, that they did not say "don't go." But they did phrase it in such a way that if you go, it's your responsibility, not theirs.)
2) Room service – Not recommended. The rationale was pretty flimsy on this, as they talked about avoiding cross contamination on the trip from the kitchen to the room. Unless they're juggling plates while they walk, I don't know how this would happen. I suspect it's really just a CYA statement.
3) Fast food outlets – Not recommended. Because of the limited food preparation space available in these outlets, the risk of cross-contamination is higher. This actually makes sense.
4) Cookies on Castaway Cay – It depends on the food allergy. The person I talked to didn't know, but said that not all food allergies (intolerances) could be accommodated on CC, and that you should consult with your dining room head server before leaving the ship. If they can't accommodate your dietary requirements on CC, they recommend you return to the ship for lunch :-)mad: ugh!).

I know these are not all the answers you were hoping for (me, neither!), but that's what they said. I spent about half an hour on the line with them, and they were very helpful, but they are also very cautious because of the potential for legal liability.

Hope this helps! :flower3:

See You Real Soon!
Richard

Thank you, Richard, for doing this legwork and posting it here for all those who might need this info!

CONGRATS!!! I think we still have a few stragglers awaiting their docs. Hope everyone gets their docs SOON!!!! :worship:

Corinna, the jewellery package arrived today, thank you. :thumbsup2

I'm sure this might be posted somewhere but booking so late, I have no idea where to find things other than the first page. :confused3 Anyway, DD Lindsay and I are flying out of Newark on the 15th and have a 5 hours lay over in Belgium (hope we can get Belgium waffles in the airport for breakfast and Belgium chocolate - no calories) :rotfl2: Anyway we arrive in BCN around 3 pm on the 16th. Does anyone have any plans to meet up on the 16th? We would love to meet up with some people. :woohoo:

Some personnal info about me - I haven't been on the Disboards:surfweb: much and I know there are old friends :grouphug:(not age wise) that we are looking forward to seeing and making new friends. My mom had Alzheimer's and my DD spent the alot of time with her and watching her especially when I was at work. I got married :lovestruc on the Disney Wonder :bride: one year ago, May 22. Even though everyone said my mom shouldn't go with us, I took her and she was so happy to be at my wedding. :grouphug: In October, DD and I took her with us on a 7 day Magic cruise and she loved it. She was on the last Transatlantic:sail: cruise with us. Anyway, at the age of 92, she passed away on :sad:my first anniversary. :sad1: Then in June, my retina detache:cool2:d and I had emergency surgery and during this time, I booked this cruise and wasn't sure if my doctor would let me travel.:confused3 I got the go ahead. Yesterday I had laser surgery on my good eye to correct some problems that could led to a detached retina in my good eye. We usually go to the MNSSHH but we can't this year because I can't miss more time from work and I'm scheduled for cataract surgery on my bad eye since the retina surgery created a cataract. Anyway, if anyone has any eye problems, don't put it off. Make a doctor's appointment right away and don't play with your eyes. The sight you save can be your own. Okay, enough with the bad stuff.

So as you can see, we had a rough year. I can't begin to tell you how much we are looking forward to and excited to be going on this cruise:banana:. Just want to hang out with people, enjoy our 14th Disney cruise, can't wait to have the drink of the day (everyday:drinking1 ), celebrate our September birthdays:bday: and just have an awesome time:cheer2::dance3:.

Just curious, does anyone know who the CD is?

Can't wait to meet everyone. CYA real soon.

Bev:)

Yes, that is a rough year. Sorry about your mom. I hope you really enjoy the cruise and have lots of fun.

Some more medical issues.....this group is kind of scary....my DD was admitted to the hospital yesterday....she has a viral infection in her intestine and a serious infection in her colon....they were trying to treat it with antibiotics by mouth but it is beating her up so they put her in the hospital....doctor said she is pretty sick and will be in the hospital through the weekend.....it seems so many of us traveling have some sort of medical problem or tragedy in our lives.....thank God I do not drink......and thank God it is happening now and not 5 weeks from now since she will be staying here and taking care of the house and the pets......
Tom

Tom, I hope they get it all sorted out soon.

I can't believe no one has said this yet, but it's now

Sorry to hear this. We will keep your family in our hearts and prayers.

The sailaway party started in the afternoon, we were at late sitting for dinner and had a window seat in PC and we left port as we ate.

Definitely recommend getting the lobster tails and combining it with the venison on Captain's Gala night for the poshest surf and turf I've had. We have all of the menus photo'ed and can post them if people want to see them.

We did Palo a couple of times and the soufflé is as good as ever :P

Oh!! Venison, yummy!

Further to post by gpb_1 I have written a mini rant regarding BA but not sure where to post it now. Well I say mini - it actually turned out quite long and covers up to embarkation!

Uh oh! Post a link here so we can read it.

Having a busy week with Becky (dd) at home for a few days, so don't have much time to catch up....

.... to everyone suffering at the moment, and welcome:dance3: to any new posters.:goodvibes

Can't believe we're only 1 month out now.......

:dance3::dance3::dance3::dance3:

Bring it on!:woohoo:

:cool1::cool1::cool1: ohhh, yes us too

The vet called and Pepper is doing well after her surgery. We pick her up tonight. Now lets hope she is a good doggie and heals nicely. The first time she had this done she manged to rip all her stitches under her tummy and had to be stitched up all over again. Last time was much better.

Should be ok cause it is on her cheek. I think we should buy stock in out vet. She even gives us a discount and is more than fair :) So far this month 2 kitties $268.00 our dog 599.99. Then we need to take our kittens back for another shot in 2 weeks. Then in November him and her become "its"

So no spa for me :rotfl: but then again I never used the spa anyways. Do you know how many Chocolate moco lattes I could have had a the Cove????

Well they are are adorable so much better investment than lattes. And lattes do not give you kisses :)

BearFan is in the Coconut FE list, but hasn't updated a room number. I can't find any posts from them so I'm not sure if they're still sailing or not. Can anyone confirm?

Also, I was looking at some of the names signed up on the rollcall, and saw a couple of people on the roll call still who canceled.
- CA Crusin' canceled in May since she'll be in Nursing school
- KellyJeanDVC also canceled in May for other reasons

There were also some other names on the WBTA website that haven't posted here and aren't listed anywhere else. Any one know if these folks will be on the ship with us?

- bsaffle - Can't find any posts by this user but they are on the website
- CarsFans - Are on the website and lanyard list, but I can't find any posts
- DDuckFan - Can't find any posts
- djrok212 - Was on the EBTA, hasn't posted on boards since April
- mousemansion - posted in the 9/11 WBTA thread. Both places said this will be their 6th cruise. Was wondering if they got the two crossings confused?
- The Diswolds - hasn't updated room assignment
- Woody2 - can't find this user[/QUOTE

DDuckFan and NewDisneyDad are no longer sailing with us. Thy are my future SIL and BIL...she found out she was pregnant and missed the cut off for this trip...as a matter of fact they are getting off the Magic today!!:) they were sad they couldn't join us, but they had a FABULOUS time!

No, you're not last. We haven't received ours, although I dreamed I did last night. Can you tell that I'm anxious?
We haven't received ours either. I called my TA and she is going to call DCL if she doesn't receive them today. I guess when they send them out and to who is in the same manual page as the upgrade specs. Val

Hello,

I am writing this on behalf of my inlaws, who will be on this WB Transatlantic Cruise, and they would love to attend the chapel services on Sundays on board the ship, if there will be a chapel service (I assume they would have this on board the ship).

They would love to hook up with anyone on here who might plan to attend a chapel service.

I am planning to set up an account here on the Dis boards for my inlaws so they can start writing into this board, even though it's very close to the sailing date, so if anyone replies to this and is planning or hoping to attend a chapel service on board the Magic while on the EB Transatlantic, let me know and maybe I can get my inlaws hooked up with you.

I'd love to go on this cruise, but my family will be going on the Panama Canal Cruise in January, so we'll have to save the transatlantic for a different time!

Have a wonderful trip everyone!!

-Kathy
