For all of us who are still here, please talk me down!
I'm freaked out about the rain storm Saturday Night...... We're flying Air Train at 8:00 on Saturday Night and it's supposed to be raining really hard. Will they delay the flights????
Make me feel better please. We only have a 40 minute layover in Atlanta and I'm afraid we're going to miss the other plane if there is a delay.....
Do they cancel planes due to raiin/thunder?
Well now, you aren't the only one freaking out about the weather.
I received a pm this morning from another one of our cruisers who is definitely your kindred spirit.
I told her she shouldn't look at the weather forecast again until tomorrow afternoon because it puts her in a panic every time.
Sooooo, first the bad news... and I'm going to be totally honest with you (but hang in there, I'm arming you with knowledge so you will be prepared for the worst)... yes, flights can be delayed and/or canceled for severe weather. Delays are called a "ground stop". And, to make matters worse, aircraft work in a domino effect - so sometimes an aircraft can be delayed in a different airport before it even takes off for your location. In other words, your plane might originate in Chicago, but if Chicago has bad weather and delays that flight, then your flight will definitely be delayed.
There are steps you can take now to lessen the impact of a possible weather delay. First, go online and look at all the flight options for Saturday on AirTran and also on their partner airlines if they have any. Write down the flight numbers and flight times. Look at alternate routes, too, not just through Atlanta, if possible. With some detective work, you can even figure out whether or not those flights still have seats available. Research flights before your flight as well as all the flights afterward. Next, enter your AirTran's reservation phone number into your cell phone. Now, you are ready to be proactive! On Saturday, keep an eye on the weather. If it looks like your area is definitely going to have severe weather that night, call the airline early and request moving to earlier flights. In the event of severe weather, the airlines are allowed to change flights without extra fees. If you are already at the airport and your flight is delayed or canceled, immediately get in line at the counter
while calling the reservation line to see what your options are! Have that list of alternate flights handy so you can be sure you're getting the best flight times.
Good luck! I know this is stressful!
We're also in the same weather situation, but we're flying on Southwest and all their flights are booked solid on Saturday except for one. And, SWA doesn't have a partner airline.
Hang in there!
