Restaurant Tipping

That said, using words such as "welfare" and "get a better job" can only be described as stirring the pot IMO. There are less extreme ways to express your dislike of the tipping system. When such hyperbole is used, it defeats the whole purpose of a civil debate on the issue.

I agree. I believe only one person used those prhases, and it wasn't me. Of course, I also don't like the comments such as "if you don't tip, expect to have something gross done to your food if you revist that place". Some people say this as though they are proud of it.

Even if was not considered "required" any longer to tip severs, my guess is that it would still happen. How many tip at places such as the deli, donut shop or coffee shop?

This is really my last reply, otherwise I would just be repeating myself, but to suggest that I should not go out for a nice meal or night is completely ridiculous, I go out, pay for my food, pay for my babysitter, etc. I should not have to pay someone who has a job and is paid by someone else.
Simple as that.
But like I said,, places I frequent will get a tip because I don't want sneeze muffins, but that is almost like bribery which should be illegal. Tip me or I will spit in your salad, what other occupation could get away with strong arming their customers that way??? Terrible.

I think that's the suggestion exactly. Your attitude towards the social convention of tipping makes you a "not nice" person according to Miss Manners. (See above.) And why does it make a difference if you're paying $10 for your meal or $100 for your meal to determine "affordability" of tipping? And do you also mean to imply that no server declares income as required by law, and therefore you shouldn't tip?

Suggesting a server simply look for another job is not only condescending but ignorant.

I'm a Brit and although we're not great on tipping it's definitely more part of the custom here now and I do make a point of tipping for good service. As an additional point, in the UK more restaurants add a 12.5% service charge element to the bill, which is supposed to be discretionary but many people just pay. There are restaurants out there that don't pass this onto the staff, which is why I usually ask for the charge to be removed and then leave the amount I want to tip as cash at the end of the meal because I figure the server is more likely to get it.

There was a thing in the Sunday Times today about tipping etiquette for those going to the States. It said that you should tip 10% if you were unhappy with the service, 15% if you were happy and 20% if you were very happy. I usually come out at that anyway but if the service has been outstanding then I'll do more.

Calling a person you don't know "ignorant" is ignorant in itself. If you think I have no manners, then you certainly don't either. Everyone has a right to their opinion, just because mine is not popular, doesn't make it wrong. Just as spitting in someone's food who didn't tip makes some on here laugh, I still think that is wrong as well.

This is really my last reply

But anyway, I'm wouldn't call you ignorant, but your attitude in this post is really unfortunate. I'm sorry that someone made you so jaded about something that equates to salary not only for the server but for the rest of the house staff at the restaurant.

thanks to pixi wing and the other one on page three who both spoke up for me. any ways i'm spending 80bucks at cct so i'm planing 10bucks for a tip if that's to little i really don't care any more. some of you are just wrong in many ways you speak. I know many many ppl who wouldn't leave a tip just because they don't have the money for it. The waitress will be lucky with the 10 they get from me.

18%-20% is way to much. and as its said they get 8bucks and hour in dlr so i don't think they need the tip to live. Sorry but i've known ppl to live on 5.25 an hour and they didn't get tips.

so now im done with this thread some of you are to rude for me to even deal with. again this is a thank you to the few who know me and defended me.

The difference between the tip you are planning to leave and 15% is two dollars. Why on earth would someone spend $80 on a meal if two lousy dollars would break the bank.

Wasn't arguing anymore, just thought it was uncalled for to call someone you don't even know ignorant because you don't agree with them. That was the only reason I replied again.

Make sure you inform the server that they didn't do anything wrong, otherwise they will be wondering. Carthay is a very upscale restaurant, and a 12% tip will cause the server to wonder. Just a quick note on the tag saying how the service was acceptable (or not, however it is...)

You definitely find those people who go above and beyond their call of duty. I've tipped for things like humor when being served cause its its one thing to get good service, but when you can joke around with the have a waiter or waitress with a sense of humor it brings a new atmosphere to the place and your experience fun. Plus you know who you want to be served again by later on the next time you eat there.

Welcome! I find that odd about the 10% for poor service. I generally leave 15% for adequate service and none for absolutely horrible service which rarely happens.

FYI: $8 per hour = $16,640 assuming no overtime and full time employment.

That's just less than 1/2 of the "self-sufficiency" standard for singles living in Orange County. For Orange COunty, it says a single person should make $32,920 to make ends meet without private or public support, or $15.58 per hour. If the person is trying to support a family, it's even worse. See this website for further information:

The tips do supplement the income to help those individuals make a living. Leaving a 12% tip is your choice, but it does seem like you're being "cheap" just to make a point. Going to Disney is a luxury that many in this world can never afford to do. Going to TS at Disney is something we often forego because of the cost including tips. When I go somewhere expensive whether it's Capital Grill or Disney, I leave a tip accordingly. YMMV

The waitress at a restaurant which is fully booked getting stuck with a sub-par tip is hardly lucky. That table could have been filled by somebody who would tip properly. There is an opportunity cost in serving poor tippers at Carthay Circle.

For every person who under tips there are those who over tip. In the end it all evens out.

I think that's the most rational post in this entire thread :rotfl:

Anyways, I actually have a tipping question. How much do you tip the valet? We are going to go with valet parking this time and I have no idea how much to tip since it's a first for us :D

A couple of bucks each time they bring your car around

To me this arguement is ridiculous. If you don't like the wage you make at the restaurant, get a better job, simple as that. I am not welfare and my extra money should not go towards supporting you, just as I don't tip the guy at the warehouse who worked his butt off in an unairconditioned building to haul my stuff to my house or the guy at Burger King, KFC, where ever to take your order, help make it and then clean up after you.j

People need to take responsibility for themselves, to me, tipping is like charity or giving the guy on the corner 25 cents for playing the flute. If you can't live off that wage, get another job, or go to school to get a better job.

I truly don't mean to be rude, but come on. I can't even believe this is a disagreement other than from people who have come to depend on other's handouts.

PS: If people cannot live on min. wage and you feel bad for them, then why not tip the guy that takes your money for gas, the cashier at Safeway

Sorry I haven't finished reading the whole thread but this is absolutely ridiculous! I am a server in a casual dining restaurant. I make $2.83 an hour + tips. Do I expect anyone to feel bad for me, of course not. I choose to do this job.

That being said don't ever compare my job to collecting welfare. I work hard for my tips and genuinely care if people are enjoying themselves when I am taking care of them. I have been doing this for 15 years and am good at it, never had a guest complaint. I expect to work for my tips but do not expect to be treated like anybody's servant or a panhandler. I tip out 2.75% of my sales regardless of what I am tipped and we claim all of our tips because weekly we are ranked and the lower your tip percentage the less tables you will get.

If you have bad service or bad food get a manager. Period. And if your server is horrible let the tip reflect it. And we do remember the bad tippers. I would never do anything gross to anyone's food but you will wait and get bare minimum service while I attend to my real guests. We remember the good tippers too!!

Also, I am college educated, with a BS in biology with a minor in psychology and a concentration in writing, so I am not stupid or unable to find a better job. I just choose to do this one.

Do you even know what ignorant means? Maybe you should look it up.

And for the record, I didn't call you ignorant. I called your suggestion (that those who are upset because they're not getting tipped fairly) ignorant. Your opinions (such as they are) and/or manners never came into play in my response.
