What happens if you check in on the second day?

Just curious, if a stay needed to start a day earlier to get in on a booking deal (and it made financial sense to do it), anyone know what would happen if you missed the first day of your hotel reservation and showed up on the second?

Call them and tell them that you're delayed. Stay in touch. It's a bit awkward since you're doing it on purpose, but they keep rooms for those delayed in travel (if you stay in contact), so....

Can you just check in online? Then they don't really know you aren't there yet...

Yes, they do. RFID in the Magic Bands.

Yes, I am aware there is RFID in the Magic Bands. We go to WDW 5-6 times per year from Pennsylvania. What I am saying is that if you are CHECKED in and your reservation is paid for, they'd be hard pressed to not have your room for you when you got there.

I say check in online and call them and tell them you will be arriving late. Your room is paid for and assigned as of 3pm the day prior, and you are checked in - they aren't going to give it to someone else.

If you check in and then don't access the room for 24 hours, they may very well cancel the reservation.

Not true. We frequently book two resorts for our stays, for the full stay. For instance, this trip next weekend, we have a 2-bedroom villa at the AKL from Jan. 29-Feb. 2 AS WELL AS a 2-Bedroom Suite at the Grand Floridian from Jan. 29-Feb. 2....for convenience purposes during the day. We use the GF room to change clothes, shower, etc. on the days we are at MK so we don't have to go all the way back to AKL in the middle of the day.

There are times during our stays that we go for 24 hours without accessing the room, and have never had it cancelled. Ever.

Did you do on-line check in and then not go to the resort at all until more than 24 hours after that on-line check in? I only ask for clarification. We have frequently gone away for a couple of days during our stays at WDW, but that has always been in the middle of our trip. Not what the OP described.

You have been very lucky. What you are doing is not recommend and could end up with you not having either room.

I won't say how people should spend their money, but wow...

Since you have experience with this, it's probably easiest for you to pop an email to the IPO and let them know you will be arriving the second day of your ressie, not the first.
I'm not sure of the policy on this, but they will respond.

What has always been posted as the answer to this question is your room will be cancelled if you don't show up. And the posters on the Dis seem to be right the vast majority of the time. Even sometimes when people call and are given a different answer! And I would bet if the deal ends on that day, that is when they really pay attention. I wouldn't risk it. Could at least one person fly in the day before, to legitimately check in?

Yes. We usually have our "main" resort, so we will only go there on our first day - the travel day. And it will be a day or two before we show up at the other one. Never been a problem.

Yet you felt the need to say so anyway?

It's our money. We can spend it however we like. We choose to spend our money on convenience, and that is worthwhile to us.

You have been very lucky. What you are doing is not recommend and could end up with you not having either room.

Anyone can book as many room-only reservations at as many resorts as they want. All I do is call and tell them when I have arrived at AKL and they check me in at GF. I am not recommending it, but I am saying it IS possible if you talk to the right people. I have a hard time believing they are going to not give me either room that I've paid $1200/night for, considering I am ON property.

Now, that isn't what the question was. The question is can you check in on your second day, and my recommendation would be to call and ask, because nothing is impossible.

I know what the question was, but that's an awful lot to spend just for that convenience. But like you said, you can spend it however you want.

It's worth it to us. What's worthwhile to one family may not be to another. But for us, it's what we choose to do with our 3-year-old triplets. We like the quiet of AKL and the ambience, but we like the convenience of the resorts on the monorail. So we generally book a package with dining and tickets at AKL and then a room-only reservation at either GF or Poly. We do this often and haven't ever had a problem.

I never really considered doing that with any resort.

Maybe. Not too many years ago Disney would cancel double bookings when they noticed them. One poster had one resort booked as a package, and another room only, and ended up with the dining package room cancelled. They found out when they tried to use the credits. Disney thought they had abandoned their room, and even had had their stuff packed up and the room re-sold to another family.

You can spend your money however you like at WDW as long as Disney is fine with it too. And they hold all the power when it comes to room reservations.
