Joy to the World: an offsite Christmas extravaganza at Disney, Universal & SeaWorld – Dec. 2016 TR

Great update! Weird thinking about Christmas in June now LOL, but I love Rudolph! I also LOVE the Disney Prep and Landing, so contemplating the Dessert party if Jingle Bell, Jingle Bam comes back this year.
And congrats on the new job! Sounds like a good fit.

Ooo I would love to meet the Rudolph characters they're so cute!

Congrats on the new job! Retail can be pretty awful. I was so happy when I finally got a desk job (though it is in a retail store) but with normal hours.

Congratulations on the new job Gina! It sounds great, and I hope it works out well for you guys!

Did they have a Hermey the Elf character meet? He was my daughter's Elf on the Shelf. (I was too cheap to buy an "official" one after finding a Hermey plush in the Target Dollar Spot.) She loves him! Unfortunately, she recognized "his" hand-writing a couple years ago, and I was busted. It was the beginning of the end for Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy.

Nice you got a job better fitted and more like you wanted.

We were very happy with the weather. Warm, except for one day, and only brief rain showers two days. Both times, we were in Aquadica, so did not care, and since no thunder, nothing was closed.

I have so many pictures of those sea of trees, I got quite a few "really" remarks from the kids. LOL I really enjoyed our three times doing the Busch parks Christmas. This year, mouse and dark side. Neither of which we have done, except for the very generous offer of Kerry to go to the Mouse's Christmas Party last year. Sorry to hear no Christmas this year, but totally understand family time. Due to distance, our family's big get together has always been Thanksgiving. Thus, while we missing home for Christmas some, enjoying warmer weather while my kids are still willing to travel with us, is the vacation time for us for at least a few more years. Your spring trips look so nice, I need a bigger pocketbook. LOL

Great pictures.

So far, we've seen a lot of differences in the personal banking system here in the USA versus Canada. It will be interesting to see it from the "other" side.

How long has it been since you've worked in banking? I had no idea you were in healthcare now.
I've worked in several industries during my career, with my stint in the banking industry ending about 12 years ago (had to stop and think about that; makes me feel old to realize I've had a 30ish year career). I am well versed in the differences between US/CA banks as I worked for the Canadian arm of a large US bank, that got bought out by another even larger US bank, who downsized us (why I left) and then sold us to one of the big 5 Canadian banks. That all predates my time here on DIS; I brought the bankr screen name over from some other forums that I participated in.

I really liked it in banking (I have also worked in the engineering and telecoms sectors), but most of the finance industry is in Toronto, and I wasn't willing to relocate and lose regular access to my kids (who would take them to Disney!) And so I changed horses.

I've been in Healthcare IT ever since, but have worked (contract) for a few different organizations. I do a lot of project management, so my engagements tend to be limited to the amount of time it takes to accomplish a given task. But I must be fairly good at it as they keep asking me back to do new things.

But enough about me!

Thanks for the latest update, Gina. It seems really odd to see all those people wearing shorts around the Christmas decorations in the SW pics. Come retirement, I'll need to get used to that I think.

BTW - did you notice down in the signature that we finally made the decision? SVR it is for March break. We're sinking a lot into home reno's this year, so a cheaper Disney trip was the decision.

The shorts are fine.....in fact we would all love to see your knees but please.....PLEASE, no socks and sandals.

Not even if I wear Justin's funky socks?

FWIW - I have never performed this fashion faux pas, not even in jest. Wrong, just wrong.
If you could get an actual pair of Justin's socks then we could allow it just for jokes.....but that's all. How about the Star War's socks he wore on May 4th?

You have no idea how relieved I am to know that you would never do it for real. I had concerns because it wouldn't work with the drivers uniform.

From what friends have said every uni has a dance team and it's a BIG deal. However, she is going to be getting her BFA in dance education and may add on the extension with the National's teacher training program for a fifth year. I'm sure you know which school that places her at. They do not look favourably on the uni dance team thing there. Not sure why. She has just announced that she would like to do a bit of a victory lap and just compete a solo next year. Problem there is that she has been offered a job with a competition for next season at all their events. The way I see it she can't do both and the job takes priority.

She still has nationals at the end of this month so I get to see her once more.
Well congratulations! I think the BFAs look down on competition...you know an art not a competition. If you have any questions about the NBS teaching program PM me. That is what my daughter is doing

What a great evening, I love Rudolph and all his friends. Sea world looked lovely with the Christmas decorations! Those meet and greets looked so wonderful!

I am glad you got a job more to your liking and in your field of expertise! Good luck

At long last.....finally time to get caught up on all your awesome posts!

What a great day at Seaworld, the pictures are great. I too love the trees and spent a lovely hour sat listening to the music and watching the lake at the outdoor seating near the Spice Mill Restaurant while my 2 went on a few rides.

I could quite happily just go on the rides at Shamus Harbour, shame my daughter is now 17! Perhaps David wants a new ride partner?

I worked in banking for 25 years and never had an incident so take heart and put it down to watching too much TV. I like the sound of the drive through bank, "do you want fries with that" :goodvibes

The concept of a drive-thru bank does make me giggle a little as well......I guess I'm just an old-fashioned gal at heart. The bank I will be working at is quite modern, though.....recently renovated (the entire facility was just reno'd top to bottom, actually) and there's no face-to-face contact at any point, not even through a window, for those working the drive-thru teller. I guess management decided a brick wall was safer, too.

A new job already!?!? Glad you found something better suited for you! (I totally understand being faaaaar older than your coworkers at the moment)

And maybe this year I'll actually get to see Christmas Town....maybe.

Yes, already! :o I know they say "a rolling stone gathers no moss" but this was an offer I couldn't refuse. I'm very excited to be working among some similarly-aged women! (there may also be a guy or two on staff, but I didn't see any during my interview and tour)

You really should make a point of visiting Christmastown ::yes::. I can think of a certain little cutie-pie of yours who will be the perfect age to take to the Fireside Feast for dinner with Santa and then to Christmastown to visit Rudolph ;).

I want to go at Christmas! I want to go at Christmas! I really want to go at Christmas

Congratulations on the new job! It will be interesting to see all the differences. I too changed jobs quite quickly, when going back to Erik I started back as an investment specialist but within a week was offered a National Office job that I couldn't turn down. I'm enjoying being out of the branch now.

And I still really want yo go at Christmas....we are however planning to go in Feb during family day week

You'll have to make a Christmas trip a must-do once your kiddos are through school. It really is amazing during the holidays!

What are the plans for February? Will you be staying at the Vistana again?

OMG, the park looks beautiful all decked out for Christmas!! Rudolph is one of my favorite Christmas stories.

It was simply stunning, for sure. I wish I had had my new phone for that trip, as my old camera doesn't do the nighttime photos justice at all.

Congrats on the new job! I love how things work out

Thank you! :goodvibes I hope it turns out to be as perfect an opportunity as it initially appears to be!

Ah, big decisions to be made by your girl. There's a ton of pressure for our young folks, isn't there?

Thank you. I suppose I might be a tiny bit proud of her. I've turned into a crier and have no idea how I dodged being a blubbering mess at the show.

Where did you get that picture of my girl?

I knew you'd appreciate the GC pic. It just seemed so fitting ;).

Does she know you refer to her as Grumpy Cat, or is that our little secret here?

Nearly missed this little detail......sounds much better than a retail job.

If this one doesn't work out...we will all know why :smokin:

Good news! I got the all-clear phone call on Friday morning. I'm pure as the driven snow :teeth:. Sometimes its good to be square.

Also working in gov/healthcare I completely understand. I'm a contractor so not exactly the same but it's all around me. On daily basis I'm shaking my head at the stupid things that happen. I've got reports to complete( several forms) where I'm asked for the same information but in different orders....IT ALL GOES TO THE SAME OFFICE.

Yes, but think of the job security that provies! If they got rid of all the reporting they'd only need 1/3 of the employees .

Congrats on the new job! It sounds like it'll be a much better fit. You also lasted much longer in retail than I did in college. I had orientation and maybe a tiny bit of a training at Old Navy while getting my 2nd bachelors and that was enough. I called and quit. What got me the most was the push to get people to sign up for their credit card, this was back in 2004 when everywhere did it. If you didn't meet your quota for card sign ups you would get fired. As a college student with debt that had worked full time for over a year before going back to school, I couldn't with a good conscious ask people or work someone that forced you to do it. I don't notice places, even Old Navy, asking this much any more.

Ah yes, we have something similar at the store I have been at, except they are "items of the month". Everyone is supposed to sell 5 per shift, and they really get testy if you don't meet your quota. It's maddening. We live in an area that has a HUGE senior population and the most recent IOM was a two-pack of copper grilling mats. The poor old women whom I was ringing through were about as interested in grill mats as they were in going to the moon. Let's just say I missed the quota on most of my shifts :rolleyes1.

Thank you! :goodvibes

I'm a little jealous of ya'll that have Christmas trips planned for this year! I'm missing planning for December :sad1:. Of course, I've been a bit lax on planning for October to date.....so maybe I just need to refocus! :p

Ooo I would love to meet the Rudolph characters they're so cute!

Congrats on the new job! Retail can be pretty awful. I was so happy when I finally got a desk job (though it is in a retail store) but with normal hours.

Yep, when all was said and done, the hours were the deal breaker. I guess I'm getting old.....I like being in my PJ's by 8:30 at the latest :lmao:.

Thanks Brian! :goodvibes

Sadly, there was no Hermie....and truly, he was the only character that was missing. I hope maybe they add him for 2017, as he would round out the existing movie characters just perfectly.

Nice you got a job better fitted and more like you wanted.

Great pictures.

Thanksgiving will be a bit of a challenge for us this year, as our families will be celebrating it in October while we won't be marking the holiday until late November. It's going to be quite strange for Steve and I to celebrate our "autumn" holiday so close to Christmas! I am kind of looking forward to Black Friday, though: always wanted to take part in the crazy shopping deals but never had the chance before now.

How many days do you have in Orlando this December? I am so glad your kids still enjoy travelling with you......its so nice to squeeze in a few more vacations before they leave the nest.

You can even mail me the bill - I promise to take care of it. I'll use a check from Tony's account - AKA - the land of no money! :thumbsup2

Poor Tony. Won't he be surprised :rotfl:.

Yay for some firm plans for March!!! I am sure you guys will be glad you decided to return to SVR. There's something very therapeutic about a week at "home", don't you think?

Heaven knows you'll need a nice, relaxing week if you're knee-deep in reno projects. There's nothing more stressful than having your home in a state of construction. Which rooms are you re-doing? Big ones like the kitchen or bath(s)?

The shorts are fine.....in fact we would all love to see your knees but please.....PLEASE, no socks and sandals.

Hey! Socks and sandals are perfectly fine if they are minion socks :o.

So obviously I am missing the deets on our illustrious PM? He's decided to wear funky socks to keep himself firmly in the media spotlight? Or are we talking about the young Mr. Bieber? (though I'm guessing its the former not the latter, as I can't imagine the Beebs sporting Star Wars anything)

What a great evening, I love Rudolph and all his friends. Sea world looked lovely with the Christmas decorations! Those meet and greets looked so wonderful!

I am glad you got a job more to your liking and in your field of expertise! Good luck

Thank you! :goodvibes I have a full week off between the time I wrap up at the retail job and the day I start at the bank, so hopefully I'll make some good progress on this trip report over that seven day period!

I can answer that for you.
He wore Star Wars socks during a recent event on May 4th with the Irish PM and then on Live with Kelly and Ryan in Niagara Falls they gave him some Live with Kelly and Ryan socks to wear. He wore Canada socks that day.
His quote : "The thing is, I'm not a formal type of guy. I much prefer jeans and a T-shirt," he told Ripa and Seacrest. (I'm just going to pause here real quick for a moment of appreciation for jeans and T-shirt Trudeau.) "But now that I'm the prime minister, they make me dress up with a suit and tie all the time, I have to get my hair cut, the whole thing. But the socks are the one way that I can sort of express myself a little bit."

I had to look up what a copper grilling mat is I've never heard of it. It seems a bit silly and defeats a bit of the purpose of grilling. And unless you are using a lot of sauce it all burns off. I can't imagine anyone would be able to sell 5 of those in an 8 hour shift let alone a 4-6 hour pt shift.

And I can get behind the fun socks Justin wears. There's no reason anyone should wear boring black socks with a suit unless they are required.

We always enjoy that "Welcome Home" at the reception center. And after many years, it really does feel like home. Since we are trading back in (March break did not align with our owners week this year), we will not be in our own unit (but we may still ask just in case), and may be in a totally different section. It might be interesting to be on the North side this year as we really have never done that, but really it doesn't matter much, we pretty much like the whole resort.

Renos this year are outdoors. We had a new balcony constructed off our living room about 3 years ago - the envy of the neighborhood as we doubled the size over the builder original. Homes were built in the 70's so they are all rotting out, but most just replace like with like, we thought bigger. Anyway, that left the rest of the outdoors looking a bit sad, so we have spent the last 3 years trying to find a landscaper who could put our vision down on paper at a cost we could stomach. Finally found the right fit this spring. So a full landscape of the front approach, plus another contractor to refresh soffit and fascia on the house. Still out grand vision is about 3 to 4 Disney vacations, so a bit of an ouch.

Now A+ would really LIKE me to finish off a few indoor renos too. The downside of being an engineer by trade is that you want to do it all yourself, but you never have the time. It would probably be better to be an Arts major where it's okay to call a contractor and not feel like you are damaging your professional pride.

Wow, that Wild Arctic tour looks amazing! I might need to stay away from your trip reports – every time I read one, I’m adding more and more things to my ‘must do’ in Orlando list...and it's getting to be a verrrrrry long list! :rotfl2:

Congratulations on the new job! Sounds like it’s a much better fit for you, that’s great news!

Thanks Judy! I had no idea......I guess I'm a bit out of the loop now that I don't get much Canadian news on the TV :o.

I had to look up what a copper grilling mat is I've never heard of it. It seems a bit silly and defeats a bit of the purpose of grilling. And unless you are using a lot of sauce it all burns off. Thankfully, the grill mats are all gone....so now we're on to shatterproof beverage containers. I managed to sell 9 (!) on my shift last Thursday, shattering my target of 5. I was hoping for a high five or a wahoo from one of my managers, but alas........I didn't even get a "good job" :worried:. A little positive feedback would have been nice.....especially since I'm unlikely to achieve my quota on either of my two final shifts :rotfl:.

I hope you took some before-and-after pictures......I bet the transformation is going to be awesome!!

And as for having it hired done......honestly, I think that's the way to go. Especially if you are getting this unbelievable heat wave that we are her in Michigan......its a good day to savour the a/c while the professionals sweat it out outside :crazy2:. Plus, the sooner its done, the sooner you can enjoy it: and heaven knows that the Canadian summer is way too short as it is ::yes::.

Oh, I know that feeling well!! I blame the Disboards for all my ideas too . Steve has threatened to hide my laptop on more than one occasion :lmao:.

And thank you! I am excited and nervous. The countdown is on to June 26th!

Tuesday, December 20th :santa:

Our Tuesday plans were mostly evening-based: we had an ADR for dinner at Beaches and Cream, followed by a reservation for a much-anticipated new experience for all of us …. a private Illuminations cruise departing from the Yacht and Beach Club docks :sail:. That left both our families with a little free time to fill until mid to late afternoon.

Since we’re not so great at sleeping in, we were up and moving far earlier than we would have liked to have been. Being early risers is a great attribute to have on days when a person wants to get to a park in time for rope drop, but not so awesome on a day that would have been ideal to indulge in some rejuvenating shut-eye. Rather than bail out of bed as soon as I was awake, I grabbed the laptop and took the opportunity to answer emails and messages from the comfort of that big king bed :surfweb:. With our moving date rapidly approaching, there were several items from Steve’s company’s global relocation team that required a response before we left the villa, so I used that time to address their questions.

I also took a few moments to peruse Seaworld’s Photokey website, curious to check out our pictures from our Wild Arctic tour, dolphin interaction, and Christmas fun the day prior, and that’s when I noticed that Steve’s Bumble photo was missing . We knew from past experience that it was quite likely that they could locate the picture manually and add it to our account, but that would necessitate a trip to the park before the end of the day as they don’t retain pictures beyond one day following the date they are taken (or at least, that’s what we are told). We weren’t exactly planning another Seaworld visit, but Steve was pretty bummed about his Bumble picture. Our annual passes still had a day or two left on them (thankfully!) and we did have time at our disposal…..so we figured, why not :confused3. We’d head back to the park and take care of the missing photo after breakfast.

We were going to just grab something quick to eat at the villa, but Steve had been kind of sad that his beloved IHOP hadn’t found its way onto the official plans……so since we were headed out anyway, I asked him if he wanted to go out for breakfast instead of dining in. Let’s just say he didn’t need to be asked twice .

There was a brand new IHOP right outside the entrance to the Grand Vista, so while we normally go to the location in Lake Buena Vista, this one seemed to make more sense (especially since we would be headed to Seaworld afterward). It was moderately busy when we arrived, but not so much so that we had any kind of wait.

Because it was Christmas time, most of the restaurants (both in and outside of the parks) had some sort of special, festive feature on their menu to mark the holiday season and IHOP was no exception. Eggnog and chocolate mint were the seasonal tastes they were highlighting, and while they sounded festive and fun, neither was appealing to either of our palettes. We did peruse the menu before deciding on our entrees, but we both ended up going with old favourites rather than a new taste. Old habits die hard…..and when you’ve already found breakfast perfection, well, it’s truly hard to deviate from that.

DSCF2138_zpsprnxiydf.jpg

Steve, of course, had his beloved steak tips, shredded hashbrowns and eggs, with a side of the pancakes that made IHOP famous in the first place. He’s always impressed by the fact that the cooks get both his steak and his eggs cooked exactly right, and today was no exception. He literally ate every last crumb, and had a contented little smile on his face as he polished off the second cup of coffee and leaned back in the booth :teeth:. He had definitely started the morning off on the right foot.

DSCF2141_zpsvn95qwmf.jpg

Me? Well, I went with my favourite as well: the bananas foster brioche French toast. That sauce :cloud9:. OMG, so unbelievably delicious :worship:. This dish is so crazy good, I don’t even feel badly about the inches it adds to my middle-aged hips: it’s worth every single one ::yes::.

DSCF2143_zpsvb0vdppi.jpg

The food and service were equally as good here as at our usual Lake Buena Vista location, and the brand-new feel of the restaurant was super nice. It was definitely a place we would return to on future trips. We covered the check and tip and headed out into the sunshiny morning: our next stop was SeaWorld :fish:.

While it was past park opening at this point, we managed to get a decent parking spot without too terrible of a walk to the entrance. As soon as we were inside the gates, we went straight to the Adventure Photo desk to explain our missing photo woes to the very sweet young fellow who was working that morning. He went straight to work on searching for the picture, and quickly located the missing photo: he was super thankful for our ability to narrow down a fairly specific time period, as that made his search much more effective. He added the picture to our account with his sincere apologies for having to make a special trip to the park to retrieve it, and we thanked him profusely for his efforts on our behalf. While the date on the photo would forever be wrong, we were just happy to have that memory preserved regardless.

With that task taken care of, we pondered what to do next….head back to the resort? Or stay and enjoy a little more time at SeaWorld? We opted for the latter….heck, we were here anyway……and decided to take in a show before heading back to the Grande Vista. Proceeding past the lighthouse and into the central area by guest services, we found this guy out greeting visitors ….. all decked out in his Christmas finery :santa:.

Ah, Shamu . I love this guy. I think we might have waited a whole 5 minutes, maybe even less, for our turn for pictures. The staff were keeping the line well managed and moving efficiently, and we were quickly on our way.

A quick check of the schedule noted that the Clyde & Seamore Show was soon to start, so that’s where we headed next. Despite arriving quite soon before the show commenced, we managed to find some good seats. We literally just sat down when the pre-show entertainment began…..perfect timing.

It wasn’t long before the stars of the show made their grand entrance: I believe this was Clyde that rolled in via a bright yellow car.

Apparently his trainer drives like me, though: not so good with a standard transmission :o. She hit the brakes a bit too quickly and ….. whoops!

Clyde and Seamore both had a lot of work to do if they were going to graduate with the rest of their classmates, but the crowd was willing to cheer them on :cheer2:.

The animals featured in this show are amazingly talented. The skills exhibited by this wee little otter just leave me speechless every single time. He is so incredibly smart, its nothing short of incredible :thumbsup2.

The sea lions, though, are the big stars of this entertaining production: in drama class, they demonstrated their skills impersonating their favourite movie (Jaws).

In science class, they highlighted their balance skills and astronomy knowledge.

There may have been a few shenanigans during lunch break :rolleyes1 (better keep an eye on your lunch, or it may disappear before you can say “sea lion”)…….

…..and after an “injury”, a trip to the school nurse was in order to ensure there was nothing major afoot.

When it came time to take his temperature, though…….well, the nurse flipped a little :scared:.

This show never disappoints: the animal behaviours are incredible, the crowd interaction is tons of fun, and it always seems to go by way too quickly! Before you know it, there’s a dramatic rescue……

…..a graduation celebration :teacher:, and to end it all off, a BIG finish:

Garfield  . I can’t believe we got to feed him just the day before!

Phew, all this performing can make a big guy tired, though :faint::

Three cheers for Sea Lion High! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

As we oozed out of the show stadium with the other guests, we noticed that the park seemed pretty full :crowded:. We briefly considered staying a little longer, but decided it might be nice to have some time to explore the resort a little more before we had to meet Kerry and the boys later in the day. As we made our way back toward the park exit, we stopped for one more photo opportunity……the last on our annual Photokey before it would expire a few days later…..just outside Sea Lion and Otter Stadium.

We headed back to the car, and made the short trek back to the Grande Vista. It was time to see what our resort was all about .

An exploratory tour of the Marriott Grande Vista grounds is next.

Sometimes the unexpected in a holiday just makes it more enjoyable. Like the delicious breakfast at IHOP and the extra shows you squeezed in at SW. Waiting to see how you got on later with the cruise :goodvibes

Yay an update! I love the Sea Lion show but I still hate the color scheme they chose for the set. I have such a visceral reaction to it.
