Disney Resorts to start charging parking fees....

I was called by someone in George's office too after sending an email. She called only a few hours after I emailed, but I wasn't able to call her back until the next morning. Overall it was a good conversation, but a couple of things she said were a little odd. Like a previous poster said, she mentioned something about a more personalized welcome at the resorts. I didn't quite understand what that was about. She acted like it was really good news. She said "Disney Arrivals" are coming where you will get a more personalized welcome. She also mentioned that they are aligning with the full service (she empathized full service) hotels in central Florida where 80% are charging parking fees and industry standard... blah, blah, blah. I told her I always thought of Disney as above industry standards and I didn't understand why they now wanted to align with them.

One thing she said that I thought was odd, something about the new parking fees were to ensure that all guests will have parking. That day guests were parking at the resorts, especially the deluxe ones, and taking up too many parking spots. They are supposedly going to limit the time and enforce it. I don't know how and why not before? I told her they could accomplish all this without implementing a parking fee. I asked her if they are anticipating more parking problems because of all the new construction, like the hotel additions at Coronado Springs, Caribbean Beach and the expected new hotels at HS and EP, but she didn't really have a response for that.

She kept telling me I wouldn't have parking fees on my current reservation since it was made before 3/21. I told her that isn't the point. I will be charged for it on any stays after that and I'm not fine with that. I told her I will likely be canceling my current resort reservation and moving off-site for my trip this May because I don't agree with this change. When she told me that there are other benefits to staying onsite like the EMH, I told her the value of those had been greatly diminished in my opinion. Not as many offered and not for as many hours as they once were, so not as valuable. But I told her that was for another conversation.

... This policy will allow our Cast Members to provide a friendly and more personalized welcome to their Resort, to really provide that Disney level of service upon our Guests arrival....

So many words - so little meaning!

Or, is that "Disney level of service upon arrival" actually the opportunity to hand over your parking fee in cash directly to a CM? ...You know, rather than pay it in some less personal way. ;) ...And, if you're really lucky, maybe they'll fold your receipt into some kind of animal - origami-style! :D

I touched on this in another thread, but I want to elaborate here. Something about the tag line that the CM's are throwing out about the "trying to bring Disney in line with the other resorts in the area" is really bothering me. If that is truly the case, if that is the way they want to play this, then the resorts need to follow suit in every other area, not just parking. I looked at a week in September at the Grand Floridian and the Polynesian vs the 4 Seasons, which is a truly luxury resort. The cost is almost equal.

Weekday, Mon-Fri, last full week of September, rack rate from WDW website, 90 day or more early booking 20% discount from 4S.

4 Seasons
Golf course view room=$554
Lake view room=$637
Theme park view room with view of fireworks=$787

GF

Garden View Outer Building= $596
Theme Park View Outer Building= $776

Poly
Standard View=$531
Lagoon View=$719
Theme Park View=$761

So, the rates are about even, but the 4S offers robes in every room, turn down service, multiple pools with 2 water slides and a lazy river, a splash pad, rock climbing wall, adults only Oasis area with an adults only pool, kids under 5 eat free and most hotel dining areas, 24 hour room service, 2x daily housekeeping, and on-site spa access. Every guest at the 4S is treated like a club level guest at WDW, the service is attentive and personalized. All of this, at a luxury resort that is on WDW property, that offers shuttle service to the parks, with no resort fee like the Swolfin.

I should note that the 4S has valet only parking for $30 a night, $3 less per night than WDW resorts.

My point is that if WDW truly wants to be in line with other services that competitors across Orlando offer, especially luxury/deluxe resorts, then they need to put their money where their mouth is and provide the same level of service that their guests would receive at a competitor that isn't owned by Disney, across the board. Don't just charge the same fees, provide the same service!!!

I'm not replying to anyone in general. I just want to chime in. I am 36 years old. I have been to Disney 7 plus times. 5 of those I paid for myself, and sometimes booked more than one room at whatever hotel we stayed. (Usually Moderates).

I have not been to Disney in about 7 years. Life happened, I couldn't go. I got divorced and had some major health issues. I am now happily remarried and extremely healthy. Since I am in such a good place now, I decided it was time to go back to Disney. I was so excited. My first honeymoon was at Disney etc etc. This time I wanted to take my husband and stepson.. who have never been to Disney before. So first I want to say.. I have had bariatric surgery, because I gained a significant amount of weight after my hysterectomy that I could not lose no matter what. (I know TMI, but it is sorta necessary as you will see why).

I began pricing Disney. I wanted to create the bubble for my hubby and step son (15) so they would decide they would want to go back. Primarily, I was thinking a 2020 or 21 trip after Galaxy's edge opened. But decided I better get them in this year and hooked first before the prices went crazy high for our next trip. I wanted to book a dining plan with my room for just my hubby and stepson. My hubby hates seeing prices of things and while I know the dining plan is overpriced I was willing to pay it to allow my hubby to relax and enjoy the trip without worrying about money. So I called and explained the situation. I explained I had proof of my operation from the Cleveland Clinic (its an actual card that explains my eating regulations and what not). I asked if it was possible just to get the dinning plan for my husband and son. I explained that I would order my own food accordingly. (I literally can not eat more then maybe 1.5 cups of food at once.. so a happy meal portion or less). They refused to work with me at all. If my husband and son got the dining plan, I MUST get it too and at the adult rate). Disney works around gf and allergies all the time. I LITERALLY volunteered my card, surgeons number, etc etc. We all know the food vouchers are tied to tickets or in this case the individual magic band. There was no reason they could not have worked with me. And literally... what I should have done is just booked the room for my son and hubby with the dining plan and just bought my ticket separate. However, being the ethical type I didn't do that and decided to price options that had a mini kitchenette... so basically I had to look at suites on Disney property. When I saw the price of a Value Level Family Suite....I couldn't believe it!!! And poof a bit of Disney magic evaporated just like that.

So because Disney left me with little options I looked elsewhere...and I couldn't believe the options. However the best option was Cabana Bay at Universal because of the suites. At this point.. I was in shock. Yes I would have to pay a parking charge.. but this resort had everything including a mini waterpark on its property.. and I could use any resort pool on Universal property. I would have got a small kitchenette area which would be perfect for me. Plus they had queen beds...early entry into harry potter etc. So I was about sold. So I contacted my travel agent.. and guess what... they had an even better deal. I could stay at the new Aventura Hotel. Two queens standard. Walking distance to all parks including the new Volcano Bay. Under a 100 a night plus a free 100 dollar food voucher. I would have to pay 12 bucks to park per day.. but hey it was worth it. And so... I went ahead and booked a 12 night vacation to universal (a park that I haven't been to in over 15 years). I wouldn't need a kitchen area with 100 voucher.. that would feed me for the duration... and the money I had planned spending on the dining plan at Disney I would just use for my hubby and sons food. So for less than 2100 dollars I got 12 days unlimited entry to US, IOA, and VB and that includes the hotel cost plus a 100 food voucher at a brand new hotel. And so what was once a Disney Vacation became a Universal Vacation, which left me heartbroken.. but it was best for my family.

Anyways, at this point it was November.. I figured I had time to decide now if I wanted to get Disney Tickets. I knew I really wanted to. I love Disney.. the entire point of going to Florida was for Disney in the first place. So after discussing the situation with my hubby... We had finally decided to split the stay. So I went and booked Pop Century for 6 days(I will never ever stay at a All Star again after my last experience there).. with a five day basic ticket. No Food... for 2100 plus dollars. I knew it was expensive...compared to just staying at Uni.. but I wanted Disney. I convinced myself and my hubby that the extra money was worth it with the perks.. free parking and fast passes. The pools are not a perk as you can't pool hop.. and after my last two on sites experiences with Disney Transportation, that was not really a perk either. (Keep in mind while we decided this Disney Park Tickets went up, I have had a few bad experiences with Disney transportation, then with them refusing to work with me on the food thing, and discovering how overpriced the resort rooms already were...The Disney Magic of the Past was just about gone). However, despite all this.. I booked. I loved Disney that much.. that I was willing to give them the chance to make new memories. Even If I was feeling a bit jaded. I figured it was worth it cause my hubby and kid had never been before. But then the bomb dropped.

Once I heard about the parking I was enraged. They took yet another perk away. I drive from Ohio...(I live 40 minutes from Cedar Point). I love seeing the country. I enjoy driving.. There is something magical about arriving in Disney after a long drive, and seeing Cindy's Castle on the way over on the ferry. But now Disney wants to penalize me for driving and they want me to use their transportation...that I have had nothing but issues with. I snapped. They want to tier parking.. and theme park tickets.. and increase food prices. Yet they wont' work with families that all don't want a dinner plan or the same ticket. Part of the beauty of Disney was being able to take 3 generations of family on a trip. If my mom wants to Come with my Hubby and I.. and she hates doing the parks but wants to stay in the same room she has to have the same ticket.. or meal plan. Or if My family wants only two meal plans instead of three in the same room that's not ok. (I GET there are ways around that.. the issue is I shouldn't have too) But they sure as heck can nickel and dime you for everything.

Anyways, I called Disney the moment the announcement came out. I complained.. I was told that its the industry standard (He Said places in Ohio charge it.. Cedar Point DOES not. IT is the number one Thrill Park in the world. It has more rides in one park than Disney has in four parks, and the tickets at peak season are 75 bucks. NOT 100+ and with that comment my Disney World evaporated.) He said don't worry you won't be charged for parking on your stay.. I'm grandfathered in. LIKE That is reassuring!!! He asked me if I would like to cancel my reso.. I said no. I wanted to really think about it before I made a snap decision.

Well Here I am.. just about a week later. I decided to cancel on principle alone. I speak with my money. I know to a lot of you can just drop money like mad. But I cannot. My husband and I work hard for our money. My husband has a very physical job.. and that more wear and tear on his body to work overtime to pay for a vacation that gives you less and less but costs more and more. My husband is more important to me than Disney any day. So I am very careful on what and how I spend our money, and Disney has now took all my love for it and crushed it with its over inflated prices and now in my eyes price gouging. There is not enough fairy dust to take me to my happy place ever again. I am done. I will never stay onsite again. And I cancelled my reservation even though I don't have to pay for parking. At this point I do not think I will ever step foot in Disney again. I called Disney directly to cancel.. and today they can't do it.. I have to have my T. A. do it. And the cast member was sorta rude. So I don't regret my decision at all now.

So to sum it up Disney just lost a person who is 36.. who has plenty of vacation dollars ahead of them.. and future generations...over parking fees. I was a repeat vacationer to Disney.. and almost bought DVC more than once. But OH well. So Hello Universal...Harry and I are friends...And Here is to a great xmas at Hogwarts in 2018.

Maybe, Disney can't afford the robes because their resort rates are also funding Shanghai, Star Wars and Bob's desert retreat on Mars? ;););););)

This is a great post. You should copy this into an email and send it to George Kalogridis if you haven't done that yet. The email address is george.kalogridis@disney.com. He needs to see this. You articulated very well why this whole parking fee is so wrong. I also put in my email how last year I spent the same amount of days at Disney and Universal and I could stay club level at Universal for over $1000 less than a deluxe at Disney. If people are going to stay at Universal that is actually worse than staying offsite. You go girl. pixiedust: You will have fun at Universal.

Everyone has a right to their opinion but Id like to add- I stopped going to Universal years ago because I had to rent a car to get there from the airport and I had to pay to park at their resorts. Loved it there but just felt prices were too high.

That said- the Disney parking fees have me considering private rentals from VRBO if not using my DVC points when I have to have a car.

This is one heck of a first post! Welcome!! :welcome:

Thank you for sharing your story. It is so disheartening and frankly disgusting that they refused to work around your post-bariatric surgery condition. My friend has had it as well and I know full well how little he can fit in his stomach. It's a serious issue that they shouldn't take lightly. And then the parking on top of that.... I know you are going to have a wonderful time at Universal! I am planning my first trip to Uni since I was a child (easily 25 years ago) since I too am fed up with WDW. Hope you'll be sticking around these forums.

We absolutely love Universal, so much so that I bought an annual pass. Much more economical than a WDW annual pass. Uni is geared more towards the older kids and teens, you may find that your Stepson will be much happier at Universal opposed to Disney.

This policy will allow our Cast Members to provide a friendly and more personalized welcome to their Resort, to really provide that Disney level of service upon our Guests arrival.
Which reminds me........
When I spoke to the rep from George K's office I told him that the parking fees weren't the entire reason for my disgust with the Disney Company. I related that several years ago I had two very dear friends who worked in Park Management at WDW and their tales of how the front line CM's were treated were terrible. My friends, who were married, finally quit Disney in disgust over the situation and moved out of Florida. I told Luke that a good part of my consternation came from the way that some CM's treated ourselves and other guests during our last couple of visits and that it was really poor business practice to pare down the number of CM's and then make the remaining ones take over the duties of the ones that were let go. I've been the victim of that management mentality in the past and it always causes the workers/CM's to turn into less than caring, not enthusiastic, often fowl tempered reps of the company.
Luke agreed with me that the CM's were often over worked and that he was in sympathy with me on that point.
I wouldn't be quite as honked off over the parking fees if I knew that the monies generated would go to hiring more qualified CM's to make WDW patrons feel more like they were valued customers, and less like cash cows.
However I'm not under the delusion that the money from the parking fees will go anywhere but into the pockets of Upper Management with a small amount going to Stockholders to keep them happy.

Craziest thing to me is that they keep talking about parking fees being industry standard for “full service” hotels. Um... have they ever been to Pop Century? (My beloved Pop Century...) Full service it is not... but somehow it’s tucked into the same umbrella.

I’m a DME person (out of state pass holder who is beholden to the bubble). But the “industry standards” is so laughable I’m ready to write in. When this broke, I was so darn frustrated on principle that I broached the idea with friends to ditch our planned 2019-2020 Disney trips/APs and go to Europe instead. We’ve been year-on year-off passholders with 100% of our vacation spend with Disney, but between this and the intrusive room checks, going overseas is looking more appealing by the moment.

Welcome to the DIS and thank you for your story. I can't believe with all the attention they pay to food allergies that they wouldn't accommodate your request. There is no other explanation than money and possibly their poor IT services. Maybe the Magic Bands can't handle a package with any individual dining differences? This is no excuse, I just can't understand why they couldn't accommodate you. It's not like you were trying to get away with something!
I agree with others who have said you should send your entire post to George K's email address. This needs to be shared with management.
I hope you have a wonderful time at Universal. Spend the extra money on an interactive wand. My daughter and I had so much fun using ours!

Please forgive this posting as I have not read this entire massive thread. I am a DVC member since 2003 and own at the Beach Club. I have always enjoyed it that when we flew in to Orlando, got our rental car and happily went to Cracker Barrel for our mandatory meal there. We would then go check to check into our DVC hotel but first going through security where I got a kick out of being welcomed home. Now I know what the magical experience will be when we come to check in where we will also be greeted by a special Disney cast member who will also greet us but will make notes about us arriving in a car. That will be communicated to guest check in and the parking fee will be added to our account if we are not staying on our DVC membership. I know (for now) I am not charged for parking but whoever thought Disney would charge to park a car at there resorts. I will be interested to see how they actually are going to do this so I will be eagerly awaiting the soon to follow posts about how this is being enforced.
