Travel Anxiety

The older I get, the more apprehensive I get traveling. I used to relish the trip, the airports, all that, but in recent years, I find myself dreading the whole process. I like the destinations, but the process of getting there is becoming more and more unnerving.

I hate the hassle of flying since 9/11... I’m not afraid of jihadists or crashing. What I dread is the getting there 2 hours early, removing shoes, belts etc through security, the waiting an hour plus to board, the being packed in like sardines unless you’re in business/first class, no free anything- not even water or coffee, the exorbitant fees for choosing a seat or checking a bag. I find flying pretty dreadful today, yet I still prefer it to driving or the bus.

Same here. Doesn't matter where we're going, and I can't help it. Rationally, I know I need to put up with it a day on each end of the vacation, so I suck it up and go, but doesn't mean I enjoy the journey!

TSA Pre-Check has alleviated a lot of my airport anxiety. Doesn't help once I'm on the plane, though. pirate:

That’s because it’s far more stressful to travel these days. Getting TSA precheck does help.

Of course, you can always drive, take a train or bus too.

You're not alone. Remember the old days of just running to the airport about 30 minutes before your flight and getting on the plane. We old folks "came up" in that era and it's hard to forget. I find flying absolute DRUDGERY anymore and the conditions on the plane with the cramped space, cranky stewards, and no-frills feels just suck the joy out of it. The thoughts of taking any flight over 2 hours has stopped me from doing a lot. Just over it.

If you get the even more seats on Jetblue, you get expedited security. I’ve found it helps a lot in Orlando.

I concur. I have to travel a lot for work and find it stresses me a lot more than it used to. But then again, as I get much older, I find traveling anywhere a hassle. Even reading and planning for my first Disney trips have me cringing over getting a bus ride to the parks and back, renting an Uber or Let if I want to go off-site for any thing. I am planning on staying on property but considered taking a day and going to US to see Harry Potter but the hassle of getting there has me thinking I should just stay at Disney.

I regularly fly 4 times a year for vacations so maybe I should look into it, Searc.
I would definitely recommend it, especially if you ever fly through MCO. That's the only reason I got it (though it of course works at airports nationwide). :p

I've *always* felt that way about Disney transportation. Not knocking it because it's good for what it does, but I get myself worked up over the lines, the time, etc. Fortunately, I'm no longer as poor as I used to be and I just rent a car. My goodness, what peace it gives me!

I'm still as poor as I used to be. :) And I think renting a car and having to navigate unknot places would add to the anxiety. But sometimes in order to do something new, and fun, you have to put up with a little unpleasantness. I'm still looking forward to it.

That's why I prefer flying international - they actually feed you and you can watch movies. I had to fly to Guam for work and I made sure to take the flight that connected in Japan (international) instead of the one through Hawaii (domestic) because the service would be so much better.

I've flown both Delta and Southwest the last few months and received free beverages/coffee and snacks sitting in the peasants section. :p I'll be flying American for the first time in a few weeks. I'll report back on their free offerings. ;)

I am actually less stressed as I get older.....guess I realize it will all work out somehow.
We seem to always get pre check......even last week in VAncouver, BC and they don't even use it :rotfl:
We fly 4-6 times a year and it has gone really well.
The only time I get stresses is if a layover is on the short side. I try to fly nonstop when possible

I still love the travel itself, but I find myself gravitating to more familiar destinations. I don't have the spirit of adventure I used to.

A friend's husband (who is German) once told me a German word for travel anxiety/anxiousness over planned travel. Wish I could remember the actual word, but I do recall it has no English equivalent.

I always get a case of the dreads whenever I'm traveling, no matter what the mode of travel or the destination is. In my case, flying always gets me. I'm always sure the plane is going to have bad turbulence or even crash. I have an anxiety disorder that contributes to these feelings, but it's always been the case. Planning-I'm sure I'll do it wrong. Packing a suitcase-I'll forget something. In the airport-I'll get pulled out of line because I look suspicious or TOO relaxed. On a train-maybe we'll derail. In a car...well, you get it. I've been known to have actual Nightmares about WDW when I'm in the planning stage, usually that I've planned everything out but for one reason or another we're there but do nothing until the last day when I panic and do my best to get to the Magic Kingdom before it closes.

It' all sounds really stupid, but I don't think I can be the only one.
