Fascinating article about competition in the food delivery space.

https://www.vox.com/recode/2020/1/9/21058674/grubhub-sale-food-delivery-struggling-industry
TL;DR: Grubhub is currently profitable but exploring a sale in an effort to consolidate amidst declining market share in a very competitive, low-margin business. DoorDash is backed with VC money and growing its market share, but it's expected to lose $450 million for 2019.

And apparently, I'm a "promiscuous" diner because I like to shop around for the best discounts among the various food delivery services.
Always knew you were down to food... the first step is admitting it!

I’m not familiar with door dash but I figured since we will most likely be getting a CSR I should see what’s around us. We would prefer pickup but only 16 places offer that compared to the 54 that deliver. I’m a little confused why places like Burger King, Chick-fil-A, and McDonald’s deliver but don’t offer pickup. Am I missing something?

I feel like with 9 days it would be hard to squeeze in Kyoto. I’m kind of biased though because we liked Tokyo more. Plus TDR is absolutely amazing. I can’t wait to go back. Dh would rather go back to just tokyo for the food.
We never saw Tokyo proper at all last fall because I spent 3 days at TDR. But we LOVED Kyoto and the surrounding trips. And I really need to go to Hiroshima this time, for personal reasons. My husband also wants to go to Osaka again and we loved our little Kyoto hotel that made us feel as "local" as we will ever feel in Japan. Plus I have some family in Kyoto and I can't go all the way to Japan and not see them... so there we are!

What about doing just one day at Tokyo Disneysea, since that is the really unique part of TDR? I passed up the opportunity to go 9 years ago and have been kicking myself ever since. I really wish I hadn't gone to the Shinagawa Aquarium instead.

I think this is a good compromise, assuming @ten6mom really wants to go to Disney. I don't think I'd give up 3 days to a DL park abroad unless I was there for at least 2-3 weeks. We did a drop in at DLP one afternoon, and it was fun, but I wouldn't have wanted to spend time there until I had seen the non-theme park stuff on my list first.

I forgot you have family there. That does change things. I didn’t realize you’ve been to TDR before (although I’m sure you’ve mentioned it). If you’ve already been there then I would skip it. You can always go back and it’ll be even better after the big expansion in 2022.

I do love Disney (obviously) but we DID go a little over a year ago. While I really, really want to see the BATB and Big Hero 6 items that are opening later this year, I feel like we gave Tokyo short shrift by not seeing any of it last time, and there are definitely things I want to see this time around.

Yes, and yes :) And TRUE! Maybe we will go again the same time you do!

Haha I wish. My guess is by 2022 we will either be trying for our second kid or I’ll be pregnant. We probably won’t realistically make it back to Japan for awhile. Taking two kids will be harder for sure.

What do you plan to do in Tokyo

Hello!
Was thinking of opening a new card soon but wanted to see what gave the best perks for car rentals. We’ve been doing Disney vacations for so long that I’ve never really paid any attention to car rental perks because we’ve never needed it, but I think we are going to start branching out to some new place that would require a car rental.
I’m ideally hoping to find a card that gives free rentals or allows for free/cheap upgrades to larger cars while paying the rate for a smaller car. (There are only 4 of us but I like to sit up higher in a car, so SUVs, pick ups, and minivans are right up my alley. It doesn’t matter to me the name brand though.)
Between DH and I we have: chase freedom, CSP, Disney VIsa, Southwest Plus and Premier, Bonvoy Visa, AA Citi, AA Citibusiness, Chase Ink, Amex Bonvoy- personal and business.

*I was planning to possibly close the CSP and then open a CSR after the 48 months from my CSP sign up bonus but with the changes am leaning towards not.

I think at the fast food places your driver places your order at the drive thru. I don’t think they have a system where like the restaurant receives the order after you place it. If that makes sense lol

Appreciative for all the DoorDash discussion. It reminded me to lookup places I could order from while they were still open.

Am I correct in reading that BK that is .6 miles from me would take 28 minutes to get delivered?!?

that’s about right lol a driver has to drive there. Place your order wait for it to be made and then bring it to you. Maybe a little less time depending on how many drivers are out.

Your explanation makes sense, but the process doesn't lol. You can do pick up on the Chick-fil-a app so seems dumb you can't do the same concept with Door Dash.

Personally I would not want to give up touring in Tokyo for a Disney park (don't hate me, everyone) especially since you're been to Disney and there is so much to see and do in Japan. I love Disney, and the rides and all, but we really limited our time at DLP (just spent a few hours there) and it's something I'm struggling with for our upcoming trip since the historical sights are "real" and Disney is fun, but not really educational. It sounds like you know what you want to do, too. Happy planning.

I just got the Delta Gold Am Ex card. It has a $50 credit in the first 3 months. I don't plan to make any Delta purchases in the next 3 month. Is there a work around? Does the credit work for Delta gift cards?

Mostly visit multiple small places:

For my husband, Akihabara and some place called Nakano Broadway? He is into Sega and tech stuff.
I want to see (just see) Shibuya Crossing from ground level and up high; get lost in Shinjuku Station; see the outside of Tokyo Station (we were inside it last time and I had NO IDEA!); Teamlab Borderless; MariKart; The Starbucks Roastery Reserve-

I think that's it for now. Lots of time will be spent running around to those places on the trains, I think.

Fascinating! I guess I should continue to pickup my own food LOL

We went to Akihabara, but not Nakano Broadway. If he likes Sega he'll like Akihabara. There's a huge Sega building with a ton of floors full of games. There are the typical claw machines, but there are also tons of other arcade games. We saw a bunch of teen Japanese boys playing and they were impressive!

Shibuya Crossing is pretty cool to see. Also, the Hachiko statue is right there. It's kind of one of those things to get a picture by. The Disney store in Shibuya is pretty awesome. We liked Kiddyland, too. Getting lost in Shinjuku station won't be hard lol. We went there to get our Metro passes and our Airbnb host had to go with us because we couldn't find the office to buy them. Teamlab Borderless is AMAZING!!! That was one of our favorite things. They have one in Tokyo and one in Odaiba. We did the one in Odaiba.

I would just not go to Disney. You’ve been before & will go again, I’m assuming. 2022+ would be better.

Though my personal ranking would be something like...

1. Family
2. Cultural & historical sites
3. Things you can’t do at home
4. Disney
100. Aimlessly wander around a train station & watch people cross the street
