News Round Up 2020

Yes 2 night 3 day experiences. Much like cruise ships have different sized rooms I think it was smart to build it like this.

Right - they'll probably have you "board" between like 3 and 5 PM, then a full day the next day, then kick you out at like 10 AM the third day. So they can call it "2 night 3 day" but really it's only one full day. Still think it could be an amazing experience. (Don't know why Universal didn't have the brains to do this first with Harry Potter.)

Looks like a neat place with plenty of TV's to watch sports on the inside!

It has a drinks-to-go section on the outside bar. I guess I never noticed that you can carry alcoholic drinks around DS (at least I've never done it).

FYI Review of City Works - sounds rather good! Also note they are already taking Tablesin Wonderland and have discounts for AP, DVC, and CMs. Also they have 2 separate happy hour times .... seems like a place that is a great addition to Disney Springs - where you can grab a beer and some quality pub food, watcs some sports or just grab a beer to go, etc.

Now you have me wondering how much I would pay to stay in Hogwarts for a few days. There's so much they could do with that.

I think the rumors surrounding the Harry Potter hotel are that Rowling would not approve it, and she has creative control over every aspect of the Wizarding World. Whether that rumor is true or not, I do not know.

I have to be careful this doesn't morph into another beer thread, but I do like the bar signage for offerings. They stuck with chalk or chalk-like writing; I like that. The more simple theme appeals to me as DS has such a plethora of themed eateries.

I didn't see any TV's outside, but maybe someone can report on that?

Sometimes you have to wonder. I'm sure some functionary somewhere was just doing his job, but you think his boss would have at least stopped and thought... "perhaps a warning and asking them not to do this again would be a better idea?" Who knows.

I get protecting your IP and I'm all in favor when someone is trying to make a profit. I also wonder how much this happens and how often it is handled better and quietly. Maybe this one just slipped through. I'm also sure it happens a whole lot and is never caught. But regardless, this is a bad look. Glad Iger stepped up and apologized and waived it. But even if his staff wrote the tweet, having him get it explained and think about it for a few minutes probably cost more than $250 based on his pay...

It's a contract Disney amongst other large film studios have, with Movie Licensing USA. That's literally the person's job..with respects to this.. If you want more info check out this thread.. https://www.disboards.com/threads/d...-pta-fundraiser-shows-a-disney-movie.3790191/

As far as handled better and quietly you have the school to thank for that. They are the ones who made it a media attention trash talking Disney and all setting up a fund on their elementary school page and all, going to social media. It would have been quiet if not for them (whether you're on their side or Movie Licensing USA's side).

Oh I get it. Disney or Movie Licensing USA is in the right. But you have to question is it worth it. As for the school system making a stink, that's the rub when you send these letters. You are a corporation, they are a public school. It's playing with publicity fire even if you are in the right.

Yeah I know PR is tricky really.

I really love it when people use social media and PR for the good. I really dislike it when people use social media and PR just to get out of something and that's what this school is doing. Take it as a lesson learned and move on with life.

Just to give background from the company's webpage: "Movie Licensing USA provides public performance licensing to legally bring the magic of movies to public libraries and K-12 schools across the U.S. Our licensing options satisfy federal copyright requirements to allow you to show movies from the world’s best studios, anywhere inside of your buildings."

So in response to if you question if it's worth it well the entire purpose of the company is related to public libraries and schools so yes it's going to be worth it IMO small or big makes no difference. Besides do we really want to send a message that a smaller school should get passes but a larger school shouldn't? How unfair would that be and would be discrimination.

No. You are correct. My answer was simply sometimes you send a notification and a warning first. Then a fine if they keep doing it. That way you have some coverage for PR. Of course maybe this school district is a serial offender and they just don't feel like arguing with them. Who knows. But you are playing a bad PR game as was shown in the end.

True true. Kinda a darned if you do darned if you don't thing. I get your line of thinking for sure.

They weren't even fined, though, just asked to pay the licensing fee that they should have paid for ahead of time.

Agreed. The school district/PTO/whoever made the decision is in the wrong. But perhaps sending a bill, the legally allowed solution, wasn't the best solution. That's all. If it truly was a first offense from that district, a letter detailing the law and offering a solution going forward if they want to show a licensed movie again might have been a better move than a bill going backward.

Simply from the PR perspective of big company/public school, the big company is going to come out with egg on their face. Which is exactly what happened. And then Iger paid the bill, which was a good call, but the "after" is rarely as useful in PR purposes as the "original". Overall, this cost more to Disney than the $250 was worth.

I expect Disney, and Movie Licensing USA, will amend their procedures going forward. Just because you are in the right doesn't mean you made the correct choice. That being said, because you made a fuss and got away with being in the wrong, doesn't mean you should be rewarded going forward either.
