It will take time for crowds to drop due to fear of the virus. Maybe crowds will start to thin out a bit in a few weeks. It depends on how this unfolds.

Touring Plans shows their estimates were quite higher than actual crowds yesterday for all parks. For DHS they predicted 10, actual crowd level 1! That’s quite a difference. But was DHS actually a 1 yesterday?
There is NO way DHS was a crowd level 1 yesterday. :rotfl: MMRR had its official opening yesterday.

(Ugh, I see this was yet again merged in with a massive, nothing to do with TPAS thread. :rolleyes2)

For Disney World to completely close, the US would have to be in the most dire of dire situations. I mean so dire that the CDC actually telling people to stay home and not go into their workplaces. If it came to that, then I could see them closing the entire place down. And even then it would take a week or so to empty all those hotel rooms.

Just my opinion

Exactly! Then everything would be shut down, not just Disney World.
We leave in 2 weeks. I'm a teeny tiny bit concerned that the parks will be closed. But I'm not going to cancel my trip.
I got sick when I returned from our last WDW trip after thanksgiving - it could have been from the plane, the parks, the airport shuttle...

I am, though, happy to hear there are more hand sanitizers in the parks. That's just a good idea in general.

I’m surprised they haven’t started selling Mickey face masks yet!
A nice little laugh in the midst of this...Disney capitalizes on everything else, so why not, right?! But I think even Disney's know this would be in bad taste.

We won’t be going until September, so just kind of hoping it goes away by then. But I absolutely do NOT think Disney can stop the spread of it in their parks because they can’t stop the spread of the flu. People do not act responsibly when they are sick. They go out, coughing all over the place, infecting everyone with impunity. And with this virus, how many times in the news have we all read that a person knew they had come into contact with it but instead of doing the responsible thing & self quarantining themselves, they went to meetings, gatherings, restaurants, flew across the country, etc? Disney can’t fight against that.

I agreed with this until we saw the unusually high death rate in Italy. With the extreme reactions in government to this I’m beginning to wonder if this is more serious than has been reported
I read an article by an Italian woman who survived the coronavirus. She said when she called the Italian equivalent of 911, no one answered so she had to drive herself to the hospital! When she got there, the nurses yelled at her and told her to go home, even with a persistent fever and breathing problems. She was lucky she lived. My babysitter spent a semester in Italy last year, and when I told her about the nurses' reaction and about emergency services not answering the call from this woman, she said, "Typical Italian behavior." Based on the service we've gotten from waiters at Via Napoli, I should not have been surprised either. lol Therefore, I'm not using Italy as a barometer for anything.

We will be going to Disney in a couple weeks, washing our hands frequently, eating in our villa a little more, and bringing lots of hand sanitizer! Other than that, there's not much we can do because I'm not willing to cancel at this point.

Can I ask those who are actually concerned and not of the opinion this is not a big deal and all hype a question?

What would you do with a long spring break trip with rented DVC points, 2 studios worth? It is a ton of money we would be throwing away if we don’t go, ignoring tickets and plane tickets where I’m assuming there is a bit more wiggle room. Our insurance is useless until Canada advises against travel to the US.
First, I would add up the non-refundable costs, and figure out if that is a financial hit I am willing to take. That answer will vary from person to person. Then I would ask the person/company you rented from if you have any wiggle room to move your dates. If the answer is no, then you have two choices. You either take the financial hit, if it’s in your budget, or you wait it out to see what will happen. As you say, you have insurance that will kick in if it’s mandatory to avoid travel. It’s possible that Disney may offer some sort of rescheduling similar to their hurricane policy if things get bad and people can’t travel. I am not sure how that works with points though.

I have a room only reservation for May, which is a little different, but I am in the wait and see camp myself. I have a vacation elsewhere in Florida to visit family coming up in a week and a half, and I am going on that trip because I won’t be in any large groups and so far there are no cases where I am going. Best of luck in making the decision that works for you.

With California declaring a state of emergency, what's the next step? Airline stocks, hotel stocks, cruise stocks all getting hammered today. Not worried but I'm running out of alka seltzer...lol . bottom not in site just yet
Disney stock down $5 today.

FWIW...I just read that the soap dispensers in the bathrooms are frequently empty. Just ordered some soap leaves for our trip in May and for local use. Will also keep paper towels in my bag. Have a RO reservation and will make a judgement call late Apr.

Maybe off-topic(?):
If you have a long term view and can sustain any potential recession, also meaning those funds are not necessary for other expenses, I would just hold. However, if you’re a trader or just trade on swings in the short term, I’ll probably get out. Things are going to get worse than they are now. That’s a definite. Anyone saying otherwise, is living with Mickey and friends. A better short term play will be options for DIS.

Los Angeles County just went from 0 confirmed cases to 11 cases in less than 48 hours It is definitely spreading undetected there.

And there are 9 positive cases now of Florida residents or ties to Florida.

Leaving in 9 days; trust me in that the chances we are around someone at WDW with the virus are there. But the same is true at home or elsewhere. short of holing up in our hose 24/7 it's a manageable risk. Bought some Purell and we will wash our hands more. A bunch of folks got the flu after the Disney marathon - a whole lot on the runDisney board. It was directly tied to running the race. Don't think they wont be back next year. Be prudent, make your choice, and well stay home so I can enjoy better wait times :) :rolleyes1

I'm 66 and in no need of my retirement savings account. I retired 11 years ago but my point is what will happen with the cruise ship that can't dock just yet and will Disneyland close because of this health crises. Some college teams today cancelled games and the atlantic 10 announced no hand shakes after games.

Hopefully, CDC and SF DPH have learned from the cruise ship incident in Japan. At least, they’ve taken the step of not allowing it to dock until all ~2,500 individuals are tested and a process to treat or quarantine is in place.

I’m not trying to be a Debbie downer or the not-fun guy at the party, but human psychology will persist for a while since this is an unknown pathogen. When you think of consumers, you really have to think broadly outside your circle, or you’ll have election bias. First thing I learned from a CPG marketer was to assume the general population in the US has the proficiency equivalent to less than a high school education. Consumers get caught up with like-minded peers. The markets have a long way to go.

We’re just in correction territory. Look at the T-notes, the 10yr yield is now 60% less than last year!

I’ve been buying puts on Disney as speculation and hedging. For the short term, I would hate to be holding DIS in shares only if any hint or rumor of that chance occurring.

Edit: Not so much of an impact to us relatively. But, don’t look away from what’s happening in Africa, and especially Iran. Those are places with lesser health services and unstable governments.

I was in Hollywood Studios ALL day yesterday. There is no way it was a 1. Crowds were very very heavy. More like an 8 or 9 to me.

Exactly this. The risk is EVERYWHERE.

Yesterday I was in HS with thousands upon thousands of people. Today I was at a spring training baseball game with thousands of people. I can tell you, it was business as usual at both places. No one here in Florida is concerned or worrying about it. Is it back of our minds down here, yeah, but we are still going strong.

Enjoy your trip
