Marathon Weekend 2021

A lot of my favorites are recent additions, so I’ve got to hand it to the people in charge of recent menu designs.

1.Chili-Spiced Crispy Fried Tofu Bowl from Satu’li Canteen
2. Plant-based Mickey Waffles and chipotle seitan and vegetable sauté at the Pop Century / Art of Animation food courts
3. Beyond Sausage Bangers and Mash at Rose & Crown
4. Felucian Kefta and Hummus Garden Spread at Docking Bay 7
5. Mickey pretzel

SAFD is nearly impossible to narme only 5 but I must:

Wagyu beef add-on at Victoria & Albert's, absolutely unreal
Bread service at Sana’a, more flavor than should be allowed
Firecracker shrimp at Yak and Yeti, just wow
The filet at Be Our Guest
Nacho chips and plastic cheese at the resort after the race, runDisney if you see this, never take that away again!

SAFD:

1. Anything Chef chooses to serve me at Victoria & Alberts
2. Margherita pizza at Wolfgang Puck Express
3. Waffle topped with strawberries & whipped cream at Sleepy Hollow
4. Bombay Sapphire martini, extra-dry, up, with two olives, at Brown Derby
5. The pick-two thing at Sanaa - love their vegetarian options! - with a side of Naan bread

Confession: I don't really like Disney food for the most part, and spend most long visits just trying to find food items that don't disgust me. :duck:

DH here.
2020 was my first marathon, done as part of Goofy. Peak run was 15 miles, in my 21-week plan. I remember looking at it in August and starting to break it down. Each week, just asking a little more. I couldn't have done peak week miles or Goofy miles when I started, but by the time I got to race weekend, I was ready.
In the end, I broke the plan into 3 phases covering the 20 weeks. My overall goal was 20 weeks of training and 1 week of celebration at WDW with DIS friends.

Was yours a DopeyBadger plan too? I'm intrigued by the lower mileage top out, but still being prepared option for the marathon. But I've always done the Galloway plans, or something similar so I tend to resort to what I know!

I think that my @DopeyBadger volume and time based plan made all the difference. In my case, he had me doing more weekly miles than the Galloway Dopey plan called for. The difference is that instead of pouring most of those miles into one massively long run every other weekend, I spread the miles out over 5 days every week. My longest run capped at 11 miles, but I had a few of them. Honestly, that worked out much better for me because it allowed me to recover much quicker and thus resume normal training with minimal adjustments just 2 days after each long run.

My worry with the lower mileage cap is not feeling prepared mentally for a full. I've run a ton of halves, but normally when I finish I can't imagine running more so I guess I'm wondering how you mentally prepare when you top out your runs at a lower distance? (I believe it works though as I've seen plenty of people with success with it...plus, science and math and things I don't understand! LOL!)

what are your five favorite things to eat at WDW? Any item, any restaurant, snacks, dessert, whatever.

This is tough!

1. Churros! (Infinitely better and more readily available at the LAND, but I still eat one each time I'm at the World!)
2. Lamb shawarma platter at Tangerine Cafe
3. Sliced Beef Bowl w/ Chimichurri sauce at Satu'li Canteen
4. All the ice cream (I prefer Mickey ice cream sandwiches, mint chocolate chip sundaes from the plaza)
5. Nutella Waffle Sandwich
Honorable Mention: Breakfast lasagna and puffed french toast from Crystal Palace.

And I'm sure I"m forgetting things. Mostly steak. I love a good steak!

SAFD: I am super duper gonna cheat at this one and admit that I just ain't got time to geek out over food at WDW because there are just too many options. But come hang out with me at Disneyland and this is what we are having:
- Churros
- Cheddar Cheese Sticks from Corn Dog Castle
- Safari Skewer (Bacon-wrapped Asparagus) from Bengal BBQ
- Bengal Beef Skewer from Bengal BBQ
And because I cannot decide between breakfast or lunch there:
- Egg & Bacon Croissant from Jolly Holiday Bakery
- Grilled Cheese and Tomato Bisque from Jolly Holiday Bakery
With either of those you grab whatever treat is the special for the season because it never disappoints.

And fine, my must have food at WDW is a Margherita Pizza at Via Napoli.

You can do it!! My dopeybadger plan topped out at 10.5 miles. It’s crazy to think with only 10.5 miles you can do a marathon let alone dopey but it worked. You just have to believe in yourself and trust the training.

SAFD:
I tell everyone that I am a vegetarian pretending to be a vegan. I stick pretty much to a vegan diet...until I show up at WDW! Damn you Beaches & Cream.

I follow a lot of the other plant based comments mentioned above, but fall off the wagon later in my list.

1- I 100% agree with Satu'li Canteen and the fried tofu bowl with the Chili spice.
2- DB7...love the Kefta
3- Sunshine Seasons Vegan Korma
4-Mickey Pretzle & Popcorn
5- (This is where I fall off the rails) No Way Josè

SAFD in random order:

1. Gumbo and pommes frites at Cafe Orleans Disneyland.
2. The beef and potatoes I had at Tiffins. I don't remember what they're called, but oh were they incredible.
3. Cheddar Cheese Soup Le Cellier
4. Desserts at Akershus
5. Desserts at the Happily Ever After dessert party in the Magic Kingdom.

I felt the exact same way. I had a difficult time wrapping my head around it and @DopeyBadger patiently answered my questions, including many variations of the same same question every time. Ultimately, I realized that I had to take the leap of faith, rely on the experience of others, consistently put in the training, and then trust that training.

For me the key moment came when Billy told me that I was running more miles in a week than the Galloway Dopey plan runner was. Because I already knew that the Galloway plan worked, this told me that I was putting in the miles I needed. I just needed to figure out how to prepare myself mentally for the marathon. 2016 U.S. Olympic Marathoner Jared Ward discusses how the mind can last much longer than the body. I came up with 4 pages of marathon mantras. Some were serious, others were funny, and yet others came from favorite movies. The entire purpose was to have something ready to meet my need at that moment, be it a "serious" pep talk, or laughing (mostly at the antics of Rhino the Hamster in Disney's Bolt), or just remembering something inspiring.

Every runner needs to determine their "why." Why do you want this? What are trying to prove? I mean this only in a positive and helpful way, mostly about finding your motivation and how you hope this will help you and/or your family, friends, and loved ones.

I always had to remind myself that the entirety of the plan, if followed well (note that I did not say perfectly) would prepare me for race day. In this case, while the long run is still the most important part of the plan, it is but one part of the plan. All the "shorter" runs followed consistently help simulate the cumulative fatigue that comes on race day. Billy often reminded me that running 5 days a week taught me to run on tired legs and that is what the end of the marathon would feel like. So I spent lots of time practicing my running on tired legs. Honestly, when I hit mile 22, I was exhausted and could have quit. But I reminded myself that I had spent months running 4 miles at least twice a week and since I already knew how to run 4 miles, I could certainly run 4 more miles now.

I’m seeing lots of people talking about Wine and Dine registration so it made me think ahead to marathon registration and I have a question I’m hoping someone can answer...

Can a DVC member register somebody else, even if the member is not running an event? My parents own DVC but are at a point in life they barely use it. I am an “associate member” meaning I can book my own vacations, but I don’t have a blue card so don’t get discounts. Can I register myself through the DVC preregistration, or log in through my Dad’s account to register myself?

Also, I will only be running the full so do I even need to worry about pre registration/ it selling out super?

It is extremely unlikely you'll need to worry about it. In the recent past, it has typically taken months, if at all, for the marathon to sell out. So if you sign up on the first day of general registration it's highly unlikely you'd have an issue.

Yes, a DVC member (or you with your dad's login) can register somebody else. Just to note, it will not show up on your account so don't worry there, you are still registered. :)
However, it is not absolutely necessary to take advantage of the early registration for the marathon. If you are considering the 5k or 10k in addition though, it certainly wouldn't hurt but still isn't required.

Good morning, runDisney all-stars! I hope everyone is having a great weekend.

For this week’s Sundays are for Disney ... what is the most quintessential Disney parks experience? In other words, if you brought a first timer to Disney, what would you do to show them “THIS is Disney”? Rides, shows, restaurants, etc. Anything goes, but I want to be inspired by your answers!

A few years ago, I would have said rope dropping MK at the train station, coupled with that first reveal of Main Street, USA. That entire experience - crowds and all - always felt so purely Disney to me.

Now, I’d probably go to the opposite end of the day. I still pick Wishes! over Happily Ever After, but HEA is a gorgeous spectacle that really achieves that sense of Disney Magic. Bonus points for being able to say after, “Now 75 percent of the crowd is leaving and we can practically walk on any ride.”

Have a great week, everyone!
