travel to foreign countrys

So are borders closed? I saw a post saying Maine is reopening. Are people from New York stopped from visiting Maine or any other open state, or vice versa? If tourist spots, like WDW, reopen, is there something to stop people from areas with larger numbers of infections from travelling there?

Can't speak to the whole country, but interstate 10 cuts through my area in Mississippi.

People from Louisiana and Alabama, our neighboring states, and elsewhere still travel the interstate without restrictions.

A friend came to my town from Louisiana the day before yesterday. Her town is about an hour away. They just wanted a change of scenery and drove through one of our fast food restaurants for takeout they couldn't get in their own town and drove back home.

No problem.

We have beaches that folks from neighboring states come visit for the day with social distancing.

No problem.

I sense (nothing more than that) that the U.K. may open its borders during the next two to three weeks, with a mandatory 14 day quarantine period for anyone entering, whether a U.K. citizen or a visitor.

I doubt that will happen so soon, except for repatriation. Next week is the next review and I think we will be lucky if the lockdown is relaxed ever so slightly to be able to visit close family. That needs to be done before international travel can start again.

I think July at the earliest is when they can start looking at staring up travel from overseas. Many European countries are not looking at opening their borders anytime soon.

No. You can be anywhere in this country within 4 hours by plane, so your concerns are valid.

We were really hoping to be able to visit my dad in Mexico this year (he moved down there 3 years ago and this would have been the first time we could actually go see his new place). But at this point we're making tentative plans for early 2021 and watching things closely over the next six months. I would prefer to buy my plane tickets now, but I'm not willing to roll the dice just yet and would rather pay more later and know the trip will definitely happen.

A few weeks ago, our governor (Ohio) stated that anyone travelling to the state from out of the state needed to self-quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. I know other states have the same law in effect right now (Hawaii, for one), so the borders aren't technically "closed", but travel between states could come with a serious cost.

yep - you might be able to "technically" visit another state, but if that state has quarantine orders in place you really have to consider whether being holed up in your hotel for 14 days before you can actually do anything is worth traveling for. I'm not super sure how well any state is enforcing these rules, but I wouldn't want to take the chance and end up using all my vacation time on the inside of a hotel room.

It might help to distinguish between the different types of US borders.

It is my understanding, the international land border between US & Canada as well as US & Mexico is currently only open for essential (not sure of the exact terminology) traffic. Those are international borders and vehicle traffic has to pass through a customs checkpoint before being allowed into the other country. Within the US, there is NO checkpoint for vehicles when traveling from one state to the next. States are typically connected by several freeways and surface roads. Part of the reason some of the state governors are coordinating their reopening at a regional level is due to the fact people can easily travel between states. The governor of NY mentioned that at one of his press conferences earlier this week. If some popular attraction opened in NY, people from NJ would likely go there, so that needs to be part of the plan for BOTH states.

Air travel requires those coming from another country to go through customs. I believe there are currently some international travel restrictions for certain countries, but not real close to that. There are currently NO domestic air travel restrictions in the USA that I am aware of. As someone else mentioned, some states have suggested quarantines from anyone traveling domestically by air/car from one state to the next. Not sure how that would actually be enforced.

or kicked out of that state but with a court date and a big fine. (all of the following is in the process of changing this and next week) idaho has open golf courses, washington does not yet. people are supposed to quarantine for 14 days if they enter idaho. there are reports on the nightly news in washington of idaho considering sending law enforcement to golf courses to check golfer's id's b/c of the number of out of state license plates. not sure what kind of time someone could get (doubt idaho would want to deal with that aspect) but i believe the fine is $1000 so that's some decent revenue the state could reap.

If Florida does the 14 day quarantine for out of state residents that would definitely hurt their tourist industry when they open up. I'd need to take 3 weeks of vacation time for a week at Disney!

I don't think Florida has ever instituted a quarantine? I think your bigger issue would be whether your home state has one, however.

We canceled our May/June trip to Europe. The airlines canceled our flights too. We will reschedule for May/June 2021, and will keep our fingers crossed that we can go.

No, my home state doesn't have one. I highly doubt, however, that I'll get back to WDW before next year. I have a trip planned for early fall, but not holding out much hope of it going forward. My guess is that if they do open it will be on a very limited basis with a heavily modified experience. I have no interest in paying the price I'm booked at if that's the case.

At the end of March the governor of Florida imposed a mandatory 14 day self-quarantine of anyone traveling from outside of the state. As far as I know that has not been lifted yet.

The uncertainty about health insurance coverage and quarantines is enough to keep me out of the States this year.
Speaking as someone who works for an insurance broker, I think it will be a *very* long time before you’ll be able to buy travel insurance that provides cancellation or medical coverage for issues arising from coronavirus/Covid-19. If ever.

And if that’s the case, a vaccine is more important then ever.

Even travel within Canada should give one pause. It's not widely understood among Canadians but each of our Provincial Health Plans are independent from one another. If you need care in Alberta, you will receive it but it will be billed at whatever rate is customary in Alberta, not Ontario. If OHIP does not reimburse the full rate, you would be on the hook for the rest of the bill if you did not also buy supplemental travel medical coverage. The government of BC, which has many high-volume tourist destinations, has announced taking it even one step further. They are going to be billing out-of-province patients directly and then the patients will have to recover the costs themselves from either their province or their travel medical insurance. These are measures we're not used to having to contend with and they're no joke. :(
